Flacco out for season

856 posts in this topic

So the Ravens have confirmed Flacco tore his ACL and MCL, Harbaugh says Joe will have surgery once the swelling goes down. Can anyone here say how long it takes for the swelling to go down and the time frame for when the surgery will happen? It seems if Joe is waiting for the swelling to go down, it might take another week or so before he can get surgery which would only hurt his chances of being ready by Week 1 of 2016.

I can't answer all those questions, but I know that Dr. Chao (profootballdoc on twitter)

doesn't expect #Flacco injury to last into 2016-could be involved as early as minicamp.

He wrote in his article:

Based on video analysis, Flacco does not have a true mutli-ligament knee injury. His MCL may be sprained but this is not like the ACL and MCL tear that NaVorro Bowman suffered where he missed the entire next season.

Because Flacco’s ACL/MCL is much less severe than Bowman’s ACL/MCL injury, I believe Ravens signal caller will have an excellent chance to be under center for the first snap of the 2016 season.

http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/monday-morning-md-medical-timeout-rule-fails-to-work/

This came out before the latest announcement, however Chao's predication probably did not change because, as he has written many times, a sprain is a partial tear.

I've been saying this since the injury was announced. I really believe Flacco will be ready by week 1 and possibly as early as OTAs, although training camp could be the likeliest outcome. He isn't a skill position and doesn't rely on cutting like they do. He is a QB and they don't have to make the cuts as much as those guys. What it does affect is possibly guys going for the knee if they want to take him out. That's a distinct possibility. But that just means we need to surround Joe with a good OL to protect him.

I'm interested in signing Cordy Glenn depending on his cost. I'm also all for drafting a LT if it the FO believes he's the next JO, Thomas, or whoever you want to insert in there who's a dominant player at LT. I do believe we'll need to make an effort to protect Joe more after the injury since teams can be dirty and go for the knee.

Glenn would be a terrific addition. I'm with you on the former as well. I brought up Rivers several pages ago, who tore his ACL, played through the AFC Championship, played through next year's preseason and tossed 34 scores. I'd be surprised if Joe Flacco misses any time at the start of the season.

Yeah. I'm not sure how much Glenn will cost and if he leaves Buffalo, but I'd be more than happy signing him to come here. He'd make an ideal replacement for KO and he would be able to play LT as well when Monroe goes down to injury. It would kill two birds and I think he's good enough to play in a ZBS.

Exactly. It would mean that we wouldn't have to spend the top selection on an LT since Glenn is in his mid-twenties and would certainly have the athletic ability to play ZBS at OG. My only concerns are whether he'd be interested in moving inside as opposed to playing LT elsewhere, considering that he's fared very well at this position, and what the price tag would be. You've already noted the latter.

On a more positive note -- Joe is going to be comeback player of the year, next season.

And still wont be voted into the pro bowl, lol

LOL. It's ok, he won't be able to go anyway because we'll be headed to the SB.

A man can dream.

Usually inside a month depends on how good a healer your are. Rivers tore up his knee in the playoffs and was back in 100 days.

5-14 days

The worst thing is that Jensen pushed Donald down by running him down from behind, which caused Donald to get off-balance and for his right foot to kick into Hurst's right foot, causing Hurst to lose balance and fall backwards while working against #96 (not even sure who this guy is, can't find his name) then this wouldn't have happened. Ironically, if Jensen just let Flacco get sacked or hit we would probably still have Iron Joe.

After some careful research about #96, it appears to be Matthew Longacre which would make since as he and was mainly on the left side with Quinn out.

Can I just say that a lot of people have torn their ACL and still function?  Flacco is definitely a tough dude, but a lot of people can cope without having an ACL.  Also, if it's a full tear, then they aren't excruciatingly painful.  He probably felt a pop, had a little pain, and maybe a little instability.

My friend tore his ACL in highschool and still plays basketball with us every weekend. He's 33 now.

Now if you're a pro athlete then they will always repair it because you will be less stable and therefore at a higher risk of injury.

This was an Al Davis quote and there was a sign above the door in the locker room.

I appreciate the history, thank you.

My favorite truism from Al Davis is "The quarterback must go down...and he must go down hard."

It's still a game where the Defense has to assert itself.

Calling it now. Joe will be back on the field before Perriman

Meh' Perriman will be a few steps behind.  Literally.

Training camp.  Joe jogs out and then Perriman.

Then Perriman falls down :(

Just kidding, I am still gonna be optimistic.

Nahhh...  I'm sure he's on anti-inflammatories, and working on that too.  Looking back at history, with guys like Carson and A.P. I think he'll be fine.  Joe's proven he's tough.  He'll rehab hard.

Brady is flawless, didn't you hear? He could do no wrong.

Interesting how if Rice did it, Flacco is a game manager who relies on his defense and running game to succeed...

James White does it, and Brady is superman

Yep. I heard people say (to this day) that Flacco shouldn't have won MVP because he was CARRIED by Boldin and Jacoby.

a lot of people said that the defense carried him that year but in reality they actually regressed a bit. That run was Pretty much all Flacco. With some help from Jacoby and some clutch catches by boldin.

Oh trust me I'm well aware of that too, but I kid you not people were saying Boldin or Jacoby should have won MVP DESPITE Flacco's 11 TDs and zero INTS.

I think it was actually 12 if I'm not mistaken but I could be wrong.

I suspect that it was a bit more painful than that on account of the screaming. (Mentioned in yesterday's LFW)

Consider the fact that an nfl lineman (who generally weigh upwards of 300 lbs) fell on top of his knee and pinned it to the ground.

Welp, at least we won't have to hear from those fans who complain about Flacco not being a leader because he doesn't organize voluntary throw-arounds in late April.

Hey look at that! James White catches a ball, breaks a tackle and picks up 20 yards after breaking a tackle for a TD. Must be nice...

Oh, and of course, then we hear about how if you give BRADY time to make a play it turns into a go ahead TD. Sigh...

and this relates to flacco being out for the season in what way?

smh at the people down playing Joe staying in the game after the injury. Obviously you have never torn anything in any of your joints. It's not just a "pop" with no pain, trust me.  Many would have remained laying on the field and then been carted off into the locker room.

Dude seriously. I played Hocckey at a high level once. A nasty ACL pretty much is what ended that for me. On the scale of things that I've experienced that hurt...that one is definitely one of the worst.
