Per ESPN, John Harbaugh is giving out 'effort stickers' to reward Ravens

Next, we'll be giving out stars to put on the fridge. Maybe cupcakes and juice if you try super hard. Perhaps even take away recess from delinquents who don't earn a sticker?

All I have to say is that we had luck in our favor, we may have been 6-3 or 7-2. You think Harbs would have done this if we were over .500?

I'm going to resort back to the embarrassing his players.

Let me explain...

Harbaugh knows that grown men who are making millions probably shouldn't need motivation to play hard, but in the event that they do, what's one thing you can attack to make them work hard? How about their pride?

What grown man is going to want a sticker? If someone gave me a sticker for working hard at my job, I might lose my job because of my reaction. That's just downright humiliating to receive an effort sticker.

Harbs is probably saying that their effort is so poor that they're resembling pee wee players and he wants to treat them that way. They don't want to be embarrassed with stickers? Play hard and make sure he doesn't treat you like a child.

Canty seemed to think of it as childish, so start playing better and prove that the only two motivating factors you need are money and that Lomdardi.

When you think about the preseason expectations and where we are now, it makes sense to me.

Harbaugh has a lot of young players that need to establish an identity... All everyone talks about is "the Ravens identity" "the Ravens defense of the past"

That playing level has to be earned its not given and I couldn't name more than three players on that defense that have consistently played at a high level this season

Maybe call the parents for the players who've lagged behind in homework.

So many of you are so quick to turn on Harbaugh, I can't believe it. He's a great coach. Just because this seems childish at first sight, doesn't mean that it is. This is more than meets the eye I think. Harbaugh is not on the hot seat, and he won't be.

Maybe it's some sort of tactic to get the guys to rally around each other and be like "Yo, can you believe 'Coach gave me a sticker?" And then Mosley be like "Naw, I can't believe he gave you a sticker. Like, what can I do with a sticker?" And then Joe walks by and he's like "I got all the stickers." and then Forsett walk by and say "You just kissing up to 'Coach" and Joe says "Haters gonna hate" and then Pitta pops in and goes "and Ain'ters gonna ain't." And then the players go out to prove to Harbaugh they don't need no silly stickers because they're grown-up men!

Or maybe he gave them all a secret sticker book to put their stickers. This may well be the Ravens' version of Pokemon.

Theres one flaw though, you and I could see a benefit from getting said stickers in the form of a promotion or a bonus. These guys are already at the top of the pile and their contracts are locked in no matter the amount of stickers. Their pay won't be increased or decreased based on the stickers. And you know exactly when you're having a good practice, any athlete knows when they play or practice well. The results are pretty immediate.

If I had a coach give out effort stickers in practice or games when I was a grown man I'd laugh.

Yea but it could lead to more playing time or taking over a starting role for someone whose been a backup.

That's the equivalent to a promotion. For younger players more playing time and an opportunity to show more of what they can do can lead to a future contract.

For older guys, the threat of losing snaps could lead to fear of being cut or their next pay check not being as large as it could be.

The stickers themselves are silly, but if they are tied to something more important like playing time they can be a motivator.

Plus most of these guys have pride and egos. Taking a shot at that can be a bigger motivator than what we might expect.

this sticker idea may seem silly, but john harbaugh is WAY smarter than the average fan and most people on this board. and for a bunch of fans to knee jerk without knowing anything behind closed doors and say its a childish idea is simply foolish.

who knows what the reason for it is, theres tons of ideas. as someone mentioned before it could be ways to motivate players to get a rest for a half day or go home early. it may be an underlying scheme to further evaluate and see whos worth keeping around and hes masking it with a harmless sticker tactic. its an innocent way of harbaugh saying "ok guys you are under the microscope now, you arent just playing for wins, you are playing for your job". guarantee harbaugh has bigger plans then we think and heads are going to roll after this season, just watch.

biscotti and harbaugh are much closer in communication then we think. harbaugh is biscottis guy, biscotti personally invested in him.. unlike billick who was already here. Stuff going down soon just watch, fellas.

It's not even about the sticker it's about what it represents... I don't think you guys  are actually seeing the clear picture it's not even like the sticker has happy faces or barney on it ...Sometimes embarrassing tactics actually work and maybe that's Harbaugh goal to embarrass the guys to get them more motivated but like I said before  I'm not in that locker room to know what really going on to say how the players are taking it.

People look at this  as Harbaugh treating his players like children well honestly  such tactics are still being used especially on jobs. In elementary school we were rewarded with cake and juice in class well that reward is still being used for working adults along with donuts lol.

And sometimes these "embarrassing tactics" backfire and you lose the respect of the guys that you are suppose to be leading.  I own a business and have quite a few employees.  I'd NEVER hand out stickies to embarrass or humiliate them into working or trying harder.  That's ridiculous!  Smh!  No matter how a few of you try to spin this...this move...with grown men that play a "gladiator-ish" type of sport....is childish, infantile and idiotic!

Could be a ploy to attract off season FA. Targets. If the money is roughly the same as it is elsewhere, stickers and snacks are real innsentive. Genius.

But you're also probably not trying to pay them millions and ask them to play a game for a living. You're asking them to do hard work to make a living. There is a difference.

I just don't get it. Maybe we're just thickheaded, Mili. I'm still wondering what POSITIVE could possibly come out of this. Legitimate question. Maybe it's just a lighthearted joke to distract us from the reality of things? I just can't fathom what the goal here possibly could be (that does not lead to Harbs looking like an idiot), but my failure to understand is my issue, not a reflection on the team. All the thoughts presented in this thread all lead to our team looking like fools. Even if it were the players' idea as some people said is a possibility, again, it brings me to the original question...what's the point, the desired outcome?

Encourages competition through embarrassment. Gets people to work harder. That's my guess.

I'll say this much, as dumb as juvenile as this sounds, you can't convince me that the team is playing without effort. They are. They just suck.

I honestly don't have any real opinion on this either way. We are having a terrible season and every little thing is going to be blown up. If BP gets his hair cut we will make a thread about identity crisis for you the young guy... Or if Suggs is seen at a basketball game, why can't he be with his teammates, he wants to be traded probably. Etc... Not saying this is an answer to anything, I'm just not going to read into too much, Yea sounds dumb... So does us being 2-7.

Wow this is so patronizing. Players have got to feel at least a little disrespected by this. Harbaugh seems so angry and annoyed with everyone this season.

It wouldn't surprise me to see the team come out pissed off today.

... wouldn't surprise me to see the same nonchalant team either

Which is what I think is the whole point, but if that's the case...sheesh

Humiliate your players with stickers to get them angry and take it out on other teams. I like the way you think, Harbaugh
