Per ESPN, John Harbaugh is giving out 'effort stickers' to reward Ravens

Like many others I didn't believe this was true... sounded like some anti Ravens propaganda. With that said it is pretty pitiful... you admit your mistakes and limit damage control to 1 year. With all of these close loses with a few free agent moves and a top draft we are back in it again next year. In the meantime I don't want to see Harbs go but this preschool stuff has gotta stop. We are nothing more than our record shows and a effort sticker is useless. How many of you receive effort sticker rewards when you fail at work?

It may not be a sticker but a company like Amazon gives their employees ratings due to their effort/performance on the job.The idea that you constantly being rated according to your effort and performance gives you extra awareness that you being watched and I like to believe it would motivate you more because in the end employees love for their work to be noticed.

Some Ravens fans think this  is Harbaugh treating his players like children and that's a understandable belief but if  it's actually keeping the players motivated and competitive through out practice then fine by me.  Majority of the guys on the team are young anyway and they already lost their  leaders  such as Steve Smith and Terrell Suggs . I guess Harbaugh trying to keep things quite interesting while those guys are gone and before the season ends.

I think many companies have "effort" programs, they just call them by different names. I worked for one that had "spot awards" where we got handed $25 gift cards for extra effort. NFL teams can't give out bonuses, so why not stickers? I think we're making too much of this. Yes, it sounds silly, but we're not in the locker room and don't know the details of how this is actually working.

Wow this is so patronizing. Players have got to feel at least a little disrespected by this. Harbaugh seems so angry and annoyed with everyone this season.

And people say Joe flacco lacks leadership. Thirty two stickers is no joke.

I'd be surprised if flacco weren't embarrassed and rolling his eyes at this cheese.

Straight up cheddar.

The more I think about this, the more I like it. I think it's a reminder that they're being graded on every practice and every play. If they want a job next year, better show the effort now.

Do we really need to be in the locker room and get the full scoop on this? Giving a grown man a sticker for trying hard...I don't see anything positive possibly coming from this

I agree with Mod 3.  It's crazy.  The media is, and the fans are being very patronizing about all of it.  When in reality, we have no real idea what it's really about.  Folks need to chill about it.

I'm going to resort back to the embarrassing his players.

Let me explain...

Harbaugh knows that grown men who are making millions probably shouldn't need motivation to play hard, but in the event that they do, what's one thing you can attack to make them work hard? How about their pride?

What grown man is going to want a sticker? If someone gave me a sticker for working hard at my job, I might lose my job because of my reaction. That's just downright humiliating to receive an effort sticker.

Harbs is probably saying that their effort is so poor that they're resembling pee wee players and he wants to treat them that way. They don't want to be embarrassed with stickers? Play hard and make sure he doesn't treat you like a child.

Canty seemed to think of it as childish, so start playing better and prove that the only two motivating factors you need are money and that Lomdardi.

I don't like it.

1. It is pre-school tactics.

2. Could be a good way to cause dissention on the team. Hey so and so got a sticker but I got more tackles! Sounds farfetched but if they need stickers to motivate them - I could see it!

3. Oh Harbs. Couldn't you have thought of something better?

I think the point was we don't know the genesis of it. Who knows, maybe even the vets contributed in the idea?

If the young guys were still walking around like they've arrived simply bc they're in the NFL now and were laughing, joking, and taking it easy through practice... Not showing that they're effected by the embarrassing losses, or that they've given up on winning...

Well then treat them exactly how they're acting/playing. If you don't display the professionalism of being able to motivate yourself to give 100% each and every day, then you show them the alternative.

I'm not saying that it's not embarrassing - but I don't know that it's not deserved. If they're not embarrassed by the losses and the fashion with which they're losing then treat them in the locker room at the same level that they're displaying on the field.

And if vets are putting these stickers on their lockers that tells me they at least support it if not had something to do with it.

I'm sure the vets doing their jobs know this has nothin to do with them... It was even pointed out that Harbs pulled all the vet leaders in for a meeting the other day. I wouldn't be surprised if it was to discuss this with them ahead of time.

If Joe, Daryl, Yanda, Webb, and Forsett dont have a problem with this then I certainly don't. These guys have huge egos, it's part of what gets them to the NFL. Embarrassment can be a huge motivator to people like that.

This is kids stuff. No player cares about this stuff. Harbaugh is out of touch with his motivational techniques and always has been IMO. His corny phrases and now effort stickers are just embarrassing.

We as fans can think what we want towards our team but at end of the day we not in The Ravens locker room. we don't really know how the players are taking this or how things are now especially since they lost leaders like Suggs and Smith Sr this season.

Honestly  if I was working on a job  and my manager out of the blue said to me and my co worker that the company is now giving out stickers base on our performance/effort then I don't care how old I am i'm going to get those stickers lol especially if it means I can be rewarded with employee of the month or a promotion.. Professional football is a job/career and the players are nothing employees .

I don't think the stickers are even gear towards the more veteran players on the team but mostly towards the younger guys that haven't made a name for themselves on the team yet and are looking for the opportunity to see more playing time on the field. Players/employees are always wondering if their performance is being noticed by the head coach/manager while in practice/ on the job.

Majority of the time they don't even know if they are having a good practice atleast in the eyes of the head coach unless all of sudden they start seeing playing time on the field during games. Some of them at times feel like they putting in alot of effort and  still not getting the playing time . If any of these young player get good amount of these suppose effort stickers  than they can for sure  go to Harbaugh and make claims for more playing time base off their stickers.

I think the sticker situation is funny but I also think it can indeed make things more competitive among the younger players and may actually motivate them more.

Theres one flaw though, you and I could see a benefit from getting said stickers in the form of a promotion or a bonus.  These guys are already at the top of the pile and their contracts are locked in no matter the amount of stickers.  Their pay won't be increased or decreased based on the stickers.  And you know exactly when you're having a good practice, any athlete knows when they play or practice well.  The results are pretty immediate.

If I had a coach give out effort stickers in practice or games when I was a grown man I'd laugh.

Yeah that was either in 2009 or 2010 After The Ravens  won not only a game but won a  playoff berth as well.

I had to roll my eyes when he brought them to Gettysburg for a motivational field trip a couple years ago. These dudes probably have no interest in learning about the Civil War rofl.

/I'm sure they found it kind of endearing though. This dude is trying to motivate in his own way--it's the thought that counts.

Understandable but if these stickers are more towards younger players like I think then I can understand it. Football players make good money but most like to get playing time. The reward for these players is playing time and if this what these stickers mean for them then cool . I honestly don't know what the full purpose of the stickers  and these guys may be grown  but you never can be too grown for fun  if that's indeed what  the stickers are providing.

If a coach gave out effort stickers in practice or in games I might also feel like I'm too grown for that but may also feel like hey I want one too lol and do what ever it takes to get one.

my post earlier today got removed... but have You ever criticsed anyone or anything in your life?

No grown man would ever say, "hey I want a sticker to!". Do you hear yourself?

It has to be an embarrassment tactic as bird says, either that or hes truly lost his mind.

Motivational stickers work well in Pee Wee Football and Elementary School. My wife's a teacher and she hands out stickers that read "I was caught doing something right." For grown men & women, motivation is supposed to come from within. All management can do is to provide an environment which is conducive for self-motivation. We're willing to donate my wife's stickers to the cause if the coach needs 'em. It might even be a good idea to give one to each of the coaches including himself. I wonder how that would make them feel about themselves. I still like the idea of implementing an "Accountability Jar" and having each player who makes a bonehead play to contribute $10,000 to a kitty that would be distributed to the charity(ies) of the team's choice. I think that might motivate someone to do his job better. Letting go of players who screw up is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, its sends a message to everyone. On the other hand, one must be careful about making someone into a scapegoat for screwing up. I did not agree with Coach Harbaugh's decision to let Jason Babin go and I didn't agree with letting Asa and Jeremy Ross go either. The reason is obvious. Its clear that at one time or another virtually every key player in our lineup has made his share of stupid mistakes. The only difference is that we could not afford to make an example of everyone who have higher salaries so we made an example of some of the lower paid employees. In the real world, this business practice works in reverse, that is, companies tend to dismiss the higher paid employees and replace them with entry-level employees  I think the decisions to let the three aforementioned players go were knee-jerk reactions but then again, what do I know. If the ESPN report is true, all I have to say is "Goodbye, John! The party's over."

It's not even about the sticker it's about what it represents... I don't think you guys  are actually seeing the clear picture it's not even like the sticker has happy faces or barney on it ...Sometimes embarrassing tactics actually work and maybe that's Harbaugh goal to embarrass the guys to get them more motivated but like I said before  I'm not in that locker room to know what really going on to say how the players are taking it.

People look at this  as Harbaugh treating his players like children well honestly  such tactics are still being used especially on jobs. In elementary school we were rewarded with cake and juice in class well that reward is still being used for working adults along with donuts lol.

You're correct...  nobody knows the true meaning of them, and why they are getting them.  All we know is what Hensley wrote, which wasn't much.  For Flacco to have 32 of them???  It's apparently been going on for a while.

Still trying to find out what is "disgusting" about it.  We may not agree with it, but how much do we really know?
