Pro-Bowl Voting: A Modest Suggestion

13 posts in this topic

Hi all,

If I may make a brief PSA, when voting for the pro-bowl this year, I urge you to save 1 vote for our former Ravens: Torrey Smith, Owen Daniels, Darian Stewart, Tyrod Taylor, and especially Pernell McPhee.

You receive more than enough votes per position to reserve one for each of these players, so when voting purple at the end of each day, also try to +1 each of these guys too. Doing this not only makes us look good as a franchise by producing so much fine talent for the NFL but it also bolsters the value of our precious compensatory picks! This is because a pro-bowl bid increases the value of the player lost, and subsequently the value of the compensatory pick received in return. Plus, with compensatory picks now being a tradable commodity, increasing compensatory pick value is now more important than ever! Pernell McPhee is teetering on the 4th/3rd round compensatory pick area, so a pro-bowl bid for him will be especially helpful for the Ravens going forward. A lot of these guys probably won't get in, but it's worth a shot. Even Andy Dalton made the probowl as the 7th alternate last season, so seriously, anything is possible!

TL;DR: Vote for former Ravens--it will help the franchise and make us look good!

This year it looks like you get more than one vote per day, so I've had the window up and been voting whenever I get bored (think I've cast about 15 votes so far, haha).

If a Pro Bowl nomination for McPhee proves the difference between a 4th rounder and a 3rd, that could be huge come draft time as that's an extra pick in the top 100 for Ozzie.

I'm also in favour of stuffing the ballots for Tyrod, but I'm not sure how the fan base would react if he got to a Pro Bowl before Joe.

lol.

fan voting is just 1/3 of all the votes.

the other 2/3 are players and coaches...

To be fair, 1/3 still isn't chump change and McPhee's having a good enough season that a Pro Bowl nod wouldn't exactly be a travesty. Michael Oher was a good example of what you're saying, but with McPhee I'm down for seeing if we can give him a nudge. Doesn't cost anything and would have a really nice payoff come draft time.

mcphee is the only guy who got a chance to make it though.

all others pretty much have no chance.

also got to keep in mind that we aint the only ones who will have this idea lol

This is a good point. Still, it's easy and free to do. You never know just how many alternates you might get at a certain position. At the very least, vote McPhee.

In any other sport I would love this setup (since fan voting is usually nonsensical homering and lazy votes for old veterans), but in this case I hate it lol.

yeah its a good idea but i doubt we are the only fanbase who is going to consider this.

BTW this means ozzie is going to value comp picks even more then before.

dont think those that want big FA signings gonna like this lol

Just Yanda and Koch this year for us.

Just an additional thought...

It isn't about the actual Pro Bowl game per say, as a lot of people disparage it and don't vote because of that.  I feel that is a little short sighted because it is more about the national recognition the players get by being selected by the fans, coaches and their peers.   To be recognized as one of the best at your position, especially on a broader national stage exposes them to a wider audience than their immediate home fan base and local media.  That national recognition from a Pro Bowl selection helps to build a players resume, garners them more exposure to national media, and can propel these players for future honors and selections like DPOY, ROY, HOF, etc.   The players consider this as one of the honors of their profession and for good reason.

Just a thought for perspective, as fans I wish we would take voting for Pro Bowl nominations a little more seriously by helping our players get more national exposure to help our players solidify and build their resume's for future honors like the HOF. As a pool of national media members ARE the ones that vote for HOF'ers, in the long run, it really does matter. The Pro Bowl has a lot more meaning and future ramifications to players careers and legacies than just playing in an all star game, just sayin', not to mention the help it gives towards the comp picks as the OP stated!

I think the Pro Bowl might be better if it wasn't actually a game. Just let it be a vote for an all AFC team and an all NFC team. You could possibly add a simulated game between the two sides, since computer players wouldn't hold back, and you wouldn't have to worry about them getting injured.

Still, because it's helpful to their careers I do try to vote for who I think the best players are.

I think Fans should not vote. I think the sports media reporters who cover NFL games should vote who gets in and who doesn't. And change the Pro bowl into the money game. Heres how my idea works

1 tackle each = $20000

Sack = $50000

Interception= $50000

Forced Fumble =$30000

Fumble recovery =$30000

Block Kick or blocked punt= $20000

Defensive TD $100,000

Pass TD =$75000

TD reception= $75000

every 25 Yards rushing or receiving =$25000

You'll see the players play their best if money is involved instead watching players just having fun.
