[News] Lardarius Webb Not Up For Permanent Move To Safety

40 posts in this topic

If Safety is so easy to play then why haven't we found someone to play FS after Ed Reed left? It might take less physicality, but it's hardly an easy position to play. That said, I think Webb may be playing better than any other CB on the roster right now. You can play him at FS, but that means you still have a hole somewhere in your secondary.

All I know is if your coverage skill starts to waiver then you play safety. A lot of great corners switched to safety at the end of their careers and they actually made an impact on the game for their team.

I think Webb at FS with Hill playing SS could be one of the best combinations in the league. This move will be a try out for next year when they select a corner in the first round if Joey Bosa is already taken.

Playing FS would likely lead to less injuries for Lardarius and that's an advantage and help for the team. The downside, there is no one available to fully take his place at CB.

30 at cornerback is kinda old in this league webb, and you are best to make that change now before you try to run step-for-step with an antonio brown or tavon austin and blow ur knees out again, then it will be too late. 2 torn acl's is an uphill climb, 3 torn acl's and you might as well call it a career.

Unless brooks comes along, if we draft vh1 that's a switch that's likely to happen. Maybe even with Ramsey too, but he might be better suited for safety himself

Well, eventually Webb will decide what's best for him. But, the team has to decide what's best for Webb within the context of the Ravens. Let's see who wins out.

Webb hasn't gotten enough credit this year. Many fans on here have been saying he's done for a long time, and while he's not the same player he was before his second acl tear, he's actually been pretty solid. He is not the reason our secondary is so horrible this year.

I'd have to say webby has been playing better ball this season. He just struggles against quick large receivers I feel like, and he has always played off the receivers because he used to use quickness and instincts to make plays, but every game I feel he takes an additional foot backwards pre-snap lol

I think he needs to gain some more muscle if hes gonna play safety on a permanent basis. Taking on a big running back or TE demands more weight.

He's versatile and has played very well this year. He's probably our most intelligent player in the backfield. Mixing things up can help us so I'd like to see him with increased snaps at safety, but as many of you said - if we do that, we still have a hole at corner. Regardless of what he says, I think when it comes right down to it, Webb will play whatever they ask him to, he's just making it clear corner is his preference. After all, he did restructure his contract and take less money last year, which wasn't even his contract year, to help the team out with all the dead money for Ngata and Rice.

Webb ought to play the position he is competent in. If he's too old and slow for CB, but can contribute at S then there should be no question about where's he gonna line up. He's made some strides at CB the past couple of weeks though, so if he keeps up the good work he just might save his CB job.

Who cares what you want Web?? It's about whats best for the team. If the coaching staff wants you at safety then you need to not be selfish and play the position to the best of your ability.

" we're just trying some guys out there to see if we can get the best guys on the field and make plays."

Don't like this quote. It sounds like the defense doesn't have a plan, they are just trying anything. No wonder they have no discipline. Pees needs a new job.

I don't think Webby sees himself as a step slower and a year older. It is not in my place to tell him he should look at the tape, but, he is constantly being turned and playing catch up. I liked his last interception but that was on a scramble where he showed his best skill, which is playing the ball, not the receiver, which is the best skill of a safety. Webby learned from the best ball hawk and I think it is coming full cycle this weekend with his mentor, Ed Reed on hand. I remember Reed taking Webby under his wing (no Raven/bird pun there) and when he was on the field he was barking and when he was on the sidelines with an injury he was barking at Webby. I think the change, the same as many older and beat up corners have taken is a wise move for him and he even played safety at Nichols State where he went to college. I think this may be one of the smartest personnel moves that Pees has made so far. Jimmy Smith on one side, Charisse Wright on the other with Webby at free safety and Will Hill laying the lumber on the inside. I think we may see a little Reed coming out in Webby and I think he has pro bowl talent at the safety position.

Ed reed, Ronnie Lott, John lynch, Sean Taylor, Brian Dawkins, just to name a few was play making safeties, not old but awesome. Safety is the most important position on defense. Every position have their own weight but safety is your last line of defense. The best front seven in the world can't stop 9 routes and deep post with a 3 step drop and launch. If a corner get burned, slips, etc the game lays in the hands of the safety. Saying old man is very disrespectful to that position.

J.Smith has been burned so many more times than Webb, so not sure why all the hate towards Webb.....And i much rather have Webb at CB, than Wright or Arrington, those two pretty much suck...

Safety is easier to play than CB but the position itself is not easy.

I would argue the defensive line is the most important position on the defense. If your trenches are terrible, it won't matter if you have Revis, Nnamdi, Ed Reed and Polamalu back there. All positions on defense are important as weaknesses can be exploited, however a terrible Dline cripples the foundation of what a defense is trying to accomplish in my opinion.

Well get used to it buddy. If it helps the team then that's where you will stay. And if we draft a Hargreaves you better believe you'll be posted back there. I'd rather have will Davis/ Arrington in the slot.

I said this a while ago Webby is the next Ed Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeed, he returns kicks and is the man to field the ball inside the 20yd line like Ed use to do and Webby is a ball hawk and can do some good things back there and every INT can be takin to the house with the return ability like Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeed! And is why I wanted the #1 pick the draft to be a CB like Jimmy Smith, two #1s on each side and not a WR! SMH

if he is better or even maybe he can be top 10 at FS a position we have tried to fill unsuccessfully since Reed left why on earth wouldn't we be playing him there... I don't care if his pride says he wants to be CB this team needs a FS.

Webby, hate to break it to you, but you HAVE gotten older. You played FS in college, and have lost a step in the pros due to your many injuries. If the team needs you at FS, continue to collect your CB paycheck, have a coke and a smile and play the damn position.
