Updated: Compensatory Picks Can be Traded in 2017 NFL Draft

84 posts in this topic

Well if playing time really helps much J thomas injury could make an argument for McPhee to be worth more In The comp department. Either way the formula they have is so confusing I just hope we can get good enough picks to have ammo to move around and go get a guy we really like.

Hey, we really liked Art Brown & traded up in the 2nd round for him. Point is trading up isn't all it's cracked up to be.

It is when you get the guy you want.   I'd rather move up and get a guy we want and be wrong  than sit back and watch our draft board dwindle and reach.

We traded up for flacco id say that worked out pretty well, just because you miss a few times doesn't means you should stop trying the get the player you really want.

I can't wait to see how this changes things.

It makes me wonder why they weren't tradable in the first place. Guess they thought it gave smart-drafting teams too much of an advantage over dumb free-agent frenzy teams. I'm sure Oz was at the forefront pushing this rule change through lol.

We should advertise the importance of voting McPhee for the pro-bowl in the main forum. The difference between a 4th and a 3rd is bigger than ever.

Blame the cba which wants to promote free agency and vets over rookies

Sucks it doesn't start until 2017. We need a lot of help on this team and that would have given the Ravens a leg up on fixing the roster.

Why do they need a year before implementing this?!

Teams might have approached FA differently had they known is the rationale I've seen.

That's how I see it as well. It's not fair for the teams who don't put much stock in compensatory pick accumulation.

I wonder how this impacts free agency. I know everyone talks about the draft, but this could be a clever way of reducing player contracts. We could see more players remain on the open market longer than before, which could affect their contracts.

I'll be watching free agency closely this year.

Thank You dude!! A team has to take their shots at players the scouting believes in. As opposed to wait for whatever garbage is left when the hat comes around. It is better for the ravens to pick the players management wants as opposed to letting other teams decide who the ravens pick or end up left with.

It sucks even more because KO is likely to be our only comp. pick in 2017 <_<

Makes the prospect of KO bringing in a 3rd round pick even better though. He needs to finish this season strong and stop getting injured lol

I think we may actually get one for upshaw too.

I'll be pleasantly surprised if KO and Upshaw get us any more than a fourth at best.

You're probably right, but maybe by being the best young Guard on the market he can get overpaid. And then maybe by being overpaid he can get pro-bowl recognition. Ben Grubbs got us a 4th though, and he was better than KO, so you're probably right.

And Upshaw gets us a 6th at best, more likely a 7th imo. Not many teams need a 1-dimensional run-stopping OLB/DE.

I was meaning to see what Grubbs got, and if he got a 4th I could see KO getting similar. Maybe the Broncos throw a lot of money at him after the success Kubiak got out of him and he has another Pro Bowl season. A 3rd is still a best case scenario and not that unreasonable imo, but a 4th is more likely imo.

I agree about Upshaw, that we'd be lucky to get a 6th. He absolutely belongs in the league, but he's not exactly going to be on a Madden cover any time soon. Tbh I think we should say forget about that particular pick and just sign someone if we like a guy (not get put off by losing a pick) but just as honestly I can't see that happening.

I didn't think about the Kubiak connection. Good bet he goes there too, since LG Evan Mathis is a FA. Elway loves to spend money too. Lets hope a bidding war ensues.

Johnson got us a fourth or fifth a few years ago, so I think Upshaw may get us a fifth, but I'm not holding my breath for us to get a high compensatory pick for him unless some 4-3 team loves him as a LE.

How many teams run a 4-3 and are hopeless enough against the run to spend money on an unflashy DE? Cleveland? I'm sure there are others but I genuinely can't think of any so that's why I ask.

I could see a team like the Lions sign him. Patriots may also be interested, but they have a solid front but you never know with them. Buccaneers are another team.

I don't think the team has to be bad to fork over money, either. I don't think he'll get much, though. I personally don't want him back.
