Updated: Compensatory Picks Can be Traded in 2017 NFL Draft

84 posts in this topic

Have to look at the other contracts handed out too, though.  Suh, Revis, Maxwell, and J. Thomas all got huge money.  They typically only do 3-4 in the 3rd.

true didn't really think about that. I could be mistaken but I thought I read somewhere since revis was on a 2nd year option contract he counted as a cut rather than a free agent. Also is there a cap rule to the amount of comp picks allowed in certain rounds? Or do they just try to limit it?

Nope the Pats structured that contract to ensure that they'd get the comp pick out of Revis.

There really is no set rule, but looking at the contracts, there's typically a distinct cutoff in APY.  The break usually comes at a sizable gap in salary.  The only real changes are when playing time or accolades bumps a guy up, and that's usually the lower rounds where that type of thing happens.

Well if playing time really helps much J thomas injury could make an argument for McPhee to be worth more In The comp department. Either way the formula they have is so confusing I just hope we can get good enough picks to have ammo to move around and go get a guy we really like.

McPhee missed the game last week and it's looking like he'll miss this one as well. I wouldn't get my hopes up.

because there will ultimately be more picks being seen as "currency", mostly in rounds 4-6, we wont be the only team trying to trade up with those picks, so the market would be flooded with late 4th 5th and 6th round picks on the table, possibly diluting the value of them.

Yeah, but I don't know if that'll be the case. Just because there are more tradeable picks doesn't necessarily devalue the picks themselves.

And now I'll back off my statement that we should stop worrying about hoarding comp picks. This certainly changes a lot.

I was that with you on that and I also must re-evaluate as well. I certainly expect better results and key acquisitions of quality. Given the maneuvering capabilities we have. I'm just hoping the new picture doesn't further cloud what's doable and not. If the christmas presents are cheap then It won't be a good look. Ozzie loves to open them presents. But if your throwing half in the trash because there broke or un fixable then i hope he saves the money for the big ticket items. We can scour the bins during the season. It's be proven via this season. Wasted picks are wasted picks.

vote for McPhee for the Pro Bowl and he could fetch us a 3rd round comp pick.

Looks like you're not even limited to one vote a day. I know what I plan to do for the next few weeks.

lol

I'd chuck Tyrod on those ballots, but I don't think I'd like how Ravens Talk would react if he reached the Pro Bowl before Joe.

It does have a limit and the formula adjusts the number of comp picks awards, player production, salaries, playing time, round taken etc. It gets complicated. That's why it takes so long for the teams to know if and where they pick. It's also very rare that a team receives a third round pick. An article that helps is posted on Overthecap.com

I can't wait to see how this changes things.

It makes me wonder why they weren't tradable in the first place. Guess they thought it gave smart-drafting teams too much of an advantage over dumb free-agent frenzy teams. I'm sure Oz was at the forefront pushing this rule change through lol.

We should advertise the importance of voting McPhee for the pro-bowl in the main forum. The difference between a 4th and a 3rd is bigger than ever.

I can't be bothered making the thread yet, but I'd endorse anything that does get put up. Be great to have four picks in the top 100. That'd give Ozzie some real ammunition.

I made one just now lol

Hoping Ravens nation can do some shameless ballot-stuffing

NFL decided they owed us.

They must have been smoking something rather strong to come up with such a good idea.

if we end up in the top 5,, then we need to own this draft ,, if bosa is gone trade back get more picks and let the magic start, trade back up ,, heck trade sideways if it will help,, but I expect us to maneuver all around this draft .

we really have a good team and we are just a couple of players and coaches away from being dominant

I think it is pointless to take time out of your own day to vote for McPhee to go to the pro bowl. Like someone already stated above, typically, there are only 3-5 teams that receive 3rd round comp picks.

McPhee received a 5yr $40mil contract

Torrey received a 5yr $40mil contract also.

I will list guys that's received more per year in terms of their APY.

Rodney Hudson: 5yr $44.2mil

Greg Hardy: 1yr $11.1mil(not sure how his works)

Jared Odrick: 5yr $42.5mil

Suh: 6yr $114mil

Antonio Cromartie: 4yr $32mil

Chris Culliver: 4yr $32mil

Byron Maxwell: 6yr $63mil

Darrelle Revis: 5yr $70mil

So out of that group, only 3-4 will be 3rd rounders and the rest will be four. If I had to bet money, Suh, Revis, Maxwell and maybe Hudson will be the ones who get 3rd rounders. Just because they are at the top of their respective positions in terms of money and the highest APY from free agency.

Odrick came from Miami, so Suh cancels that compensation. Arizona signed Iupati, canceling their compensation for Cromartie.

Suh, Maxwell, Culliver, and Julius Thomas is our competition. None of those teams are likely to make the playoffs except Maxwell and the Eagles. Who knows, though, as Thomas may if the Jaguars surprise. I don't think any of them make the Pro Bowl. Culliver only played in 5 games, so that could help us. Thomas has played in 6 so we may benefit there, too.

It's possible the Bears could make the playoffs as crazy as that sounds. I think it's unlikely but they're only 2.5 games behind GB who's the 5th seed atm with a 6-2 record while the Giants are the 6th seed with a 5-5.

How about that?? Ozzies method about to pay off even more.

With 3 likely coming our way again this offseason that provides a lot of draft capital to move up if needed.

What do you think Ozzies going to do with this new freedom?

Are you happy because it gives us more ammo to move up in drafts?

Or upset because it likely means that Ozzie is even more committed to avoiding UFAs and only targeting cut players?

For anyone wondering:

A 4th for Mcphee

A 4th for Torrey

and a 6th for Owen Daniels

http://overthecap.com/2016-compensatory-draft-picks-update-5122015/

alot has changed since that article. McPhee could be in the hunt for a third, Torrey could turn into a 5th since he hasn't performed. Owen is probably still a 6th and depending on how things shake out the rest of the season Tyrod could be as high as a fourth

Also since Darian Stewart has outperformed Lewis he could be a 5th and the Daniels and Lewis cancel eachother out.

All the more reason to vote for your former ravens when you do your pro bowl voting.

Vote McPhee, Torrey, Tyrod, Darian Stewart, and Owen Daniels for the pro bowl with your extra ballots!

Playing well doesn't have much in the equation unless they get the accolades to go with it, like the Pro Bowl.  It's long been stated that the only things that go into the equation are contract size, playing time, and accolades.  There's no information on how much each is worth in the equation though.

Tyrod is questionable for a 7th right now.  Absolutely no way he gets to a 4th.

I think McPhee has a legit shot to get us a 3rd. Def, think he has the upper hand over Julius Thomas. Hope he can make the Pro Bowl. I think the coaches will give him that consideration in the long run and hes getting more recognization from fans. Honestly Bears got a great player in McPhee.
