Updated: Compensatory Picks Can be Traded in 2017 NFL Draft

84 posts in this topic

This is an interesting turn of events for next year's draft. The League is expected to announce that previously untradeable Compensatory picks will now be eligible to be traded come 2016. This changes the draft strategy for all 32 teams now, and will make the draft much more interesting.

Ozzie is the king of compensatory picks, he will most likely have a shot at a top 5/10 player and now can trade compensatory picks or even add more compensatory picks via trade? Ozzie has to be licking his chops at this news.

And now I'll back off my statement that we should stop worrying about hoarding comp picks. This certainly changes a lot.

With Comp picks being trade-able, we could trade up from the early second to the late first pretty easily. The Ravens could end up picking in the top 10, and being able to trade up to our normal spot in the first round.

This is fantastic news with what appears to be a top 5-10 pick in every round to begin with.

I think we can feel comfortable that McPhee and Smith will fetch us at least 2 4th rounders, hopefully Owen Daniels gets us a 6th.  The interesting one will be Tyrod.  I am no expert and know the formula is not public knowledge but do people think he would sneak into the 7th?  With the comp pick being tradeable it becomes more valuable as I can see teams trading a 2017 6th for a late 2016 7th to snatch up a player so they don't be come UFA's.

Hopefully Ozzie can use this and get us back into the first round and make a move for someone. Dont know who yet. Especially late in the first round its all still foggy in that part of the draft i think. No telling who will rise until then

As of now the projections are:

4th for McPhee

4th for Torrey

6th for Daniels

The 7th for Tyrod is not going to be awarded

Id love a top 10 pick then trade back into the late first and get Doctson or somebody like that, it will give them the 5th year option.

McPhee might get a 3rd..

Very possible, since I'm not hugely familiar with Comp pick formula, I had to go with what www.overthecap.com stated (as of September)

I think the only way McPhee gives us a 3rd is if he makes the Pro Bowl. They're not likely making the playoffs

Speaking of which, when do the ballots open?

How does Tyrod not get us anything....that's cheap. He's the starting qb for the bills!

Based heavily on contract, with playing time and accolades being an unknown portion of the equation. He didn't get a big contract and missed a few games with injury.

I'd love to make a move for Michael Thomas in the 2nd round or Vonn Bell in the 3rd.

anyone else think this would drastically affect the value of picks? like we wouldnt get such a distinct advantage because this will make 4th and 5th round picks much less valuable?

Elaborate more on this.

Elaborate more on this.

because there will ultimately be more picks being seen as "currency", mostly in rounds 4-6, we wont be the only team trying to trade up with those picks, so the market would be flooded with late 4th 5th and 6th round picks on the table, possibly diluting the value of them.

No more teams trading up right in front of the comp picks either.  If there's a guy a team wants, they can afford to be a little more patient knowing they don't necessarily have to move up in front of locked in comp picks.

Paul Kruger got us a 3rd round comp pick I don't think it's out of the question for McPhee to get us another. Here's how they stack up

Kruger contract 5 years 40 mil started all 16 games and had 4.5 sacks

McPhee contract 5 years 39 mil played and started 8 games so far with 5 sacks

I wouldn't be too shocked if we got a 3rd for Torrey either, he got a 40mil contract and if the comp pick formula takes into account how bad the team at that specific position was without the player the next year then I'd say we deserve a 3rd for him.

Have to look at the other contracts handed out too, though.  Suh, Revis, Maxwell, and J. Thomas all got huge money.  They typically only do 3-4 in the 3rd.
