Zuttah placed on IR; Ravens Promote Terrance West

37 posts in this topic

I wonder if Urschel does well the rest of the year if the Ravens would cut Zuttah.  Zuttah carries $2.1M in dead money next year.

More likely he just slides over and replaces KO in my eyes.

I think Zuttah has played well this season and has earned another year.

Maybe, or maybe we'll keep him and use him at LG. He played there before with Tampa Bay.

4 RB's on a team that doesn't run the ball?

Actually kind of laughed at this, but only because it's true.

Boy, we can't catch a break... So does that leave Jensen and Hurst as our only active backup OL? That doesn't seem like a great idea. Maybe someone was trying to poach West off the PS.

We have De'Ondre Wesley as well.

Truth is, I don't think he's played bad since he got here.  People just seem to expect him to come out and perform like he's Mack.

Correct, I don't either. I seen reason to move on from him. $4.6M cap hit in 2016 is reasonable to me, and we save only about $1.3M in space by cutting him.

Even if you replace him with Urschel, you have no replacement at LG, meaning you put all your eggs in a rookie basket or in a FA who would likely cost more than the $1.3M in cap space you create by moving on.

I expect our OL to return 4 starters next year, with Urschel or a draft pick starting at LG.

Exactly.  Force Urschel into a starting role and now we lose solid depth.  No reason to cut him.  Can't find another player of his caliber for what we'd save.

I'm thinking that Urschel will take over for KO at LG, and Zuttah will battle some rookie for starting center duties.

I agree and hope you are right.  Zuttah has played fairly well this year and before this was pretty durable. Zuttah should definitely be back next year with some rookie competition.

Never understood the hate for Zuttah. He hasn't been a superstar, but he hasn't been bad or anything. It's not like C is an easy position to find. How soon we forget that our options were Gradkowski and Shipley not too long ago. Zuttah is a clear upgrade.

Was never paid like a superstar either. Think he got a bum wrap because the Gino experiment failed, people thought Matt Birk was the best center ever (he was largely average in his tenure in Baltimore), and fans were still on that incredibly unrealistic kick of paying like $8-10M a year to Alex Mack for a position that doesn't require that much money.

Basically, fans overreacted as they normally do.

We went 2-7 with him, can it get much worse without him? I think not. We are already one of the worst teams in the league. At some point, you hit rock bottom and we are almost there.

That being said, the coaching and medical staff are not going to waste their times with anymore injuries. Any type of injury that takes more than 3-4 weeks now, that player will be sent to the IR. No questions asked. Some injuries may not be truly season ending (I believe Zuttah could still play with his) but this season is already out the window and the Ravens would rather evauluate their younger players.

Can we sit Joe for the rest of the season please?

I was actually thinking very seriously about this. Would hate to see him get seriously injured in a totally lost season. Also, if we start Schaub, we're pretty much guaranteed a top 5 draft pick. Hell, maybe even the first lol. But I just couldn't see the Patriots benching Brady in a down season or the same with Green Bay and A-Rod and it's not like Flacco is playing like Peyton Manning. Harbaugh probably still thinks we have a chance this year.

You may be looking at 2017.  Zuttah's dead cap hit in 2016 is $3.32M.

Hindsight is 20/20, Zuttah was acquired in 2013 so we have gone 8-8 and almost to the AFC Championship game last year with him. So he's been a serviceable center for us. Our whole O-line has been banged up yet we are still very competitive.

We picked up Zuttah in 14.  He's been worth what he's been paid.  I have no complaints about him.  If he was on the 13 team, we might have made playoffs.

What? A FA signing didn't become a superstar? What a bum

Why did we Promote Terrence? Because I know he isn't getting any carries. Buck Allen only got one carry IIRC
