You all really don't understand depression...

It's not as simple as saying, "I'm sad." Depression is literally losing the will and desire to do anything. Even getting out of bed is a struggle, let alone talking to people. Depression isn't something to say he handled poorly considering that depression is quite a serious mental disorder. The fact that some of you are trying to downplay it tells me you have never been clinically depressed.

Trust me, it's not a place you want to be. When every single day is a struggle and every waking hour is a battle, it's just not fun.

And the fact of the matter is you don't pick and chose depression. Depression is something that just naturally hits you and you just have to take it. Don't act like he could avoid this.

Yeah, I was about to say that some people here are either just uneducated or they're actual scumbags with a disgusting lack of empathy for other people just because they're "entertainers" or they don't fit their ideal mould of a rugged, tough and manly athlete. And I'm so cynical about RT that I dunno what alternative we're looking at.

Athletes are put under all sorts of pressure and I think you'll find that depression and the like is FAR more common than people realise (especially in the NFL with all the head knocks). Fortunately in NZ and Australia the culture is changing to being more open about mental health issues in sports, but going by the comments here the NFL fan base has a long way to go. Like K-Dog has been saying, if I get sick this is the last place I'm coming for support

As another individual who has struggled with depression, yes it is a serious condition.  No it is not something to be taken lightly.  No it's not his fault, it doesn't make something wrong with him.

really?

i watched his press conference and he did not appear he was that far gone he had to be placed on suicide watch.

think its actually good he already had to deal with this cause it means  if it happens again he might be able to deal with it better.

seems a bit harsh to write the guy off, because he had trouble dealing with his situation.....

Im not writing him off but I gotta say I am a lot more worried about this pick after hearing about his lack of communication with his family and Harbs. I hope im wrong.

There's also a huge difference from getting injured and dealing with it than what he did.

I understand you are bummed that you got injured.. Nothing he or anyone else can do. You heal, get better and train your butt off to come back. In the mean time, you cheer on your teammates, learn the playbook and continue to try and get better.

You don't sit at home and sulk. He ignored his coach and his parents for god sake. I mean come the hell on. How childish is that? He's acting like he didn't get picked for the backyard football game.

I wonder if Kevin White sat at home and didn't answer his parents calls? I would place a bet that he handled the situation like an adult.

Yep .If you think about it ,when you are that young and injured you want assurances and support from your family and coaches. He turned completely away.

That makes me worried about this kid and I can guarantee you watching the coaches react to all this they will be heavily looking for wide receiver help next year.

Yes you are wrong.

Depression is not a choice, it's an illness.

so you guys rather have a rookie who is happy he is injured, his teammates are losing , does not care 1 bit he cant contribute and just goes partying and such rather then being down about the whole thing?

alright then.

Right? And im sure the whole "dark hole" part is all just him having a mental issue and being weak and has nothing to do with all the excitement he probably had to join the Ravens and be great for this fan base, only to find out that after getting injured a few weeks later the fan base is calling him out, calling him a bust, weak, soft, a loser, and someone who will never succeed in the NFL.

Keep in mind the kid just graduated college. Yea, we all know what it would be like to have 100's of thousands of people with immediate access to you calling you a bum, washed up, bust, soft loser.

Can we let the kid play please? Some of you must have terribly awful and unfulfilling lives if you have to tear this kid down over every little thing he does or says.

Im not writing him off but I gotta say I am a lot more worried about this pick after hearing about his lack of communication with his family and Harbs. I hope im wrong.

So football is everything to the guy... he had a tough time dealing with football being out of his life and not being able to compete for himself, his team mates, and us the fans.

We need more guys that view injuries as a vacation - the more time off the better! Jeez.. I mean I'm not happy he was that upset, but for his sake as a human being, not for how it affects my favorite football team. And at least its a sign that his passion for this game and this team is through the roof. Tells me that when he gets football back hes going to do everything he can to be successful at it because he doesnt want to go through not having it again.

Plus, remember hes just a kid. And the minute he didnt return to practice after just a day or 2 he had thousands of people questions his commitment, calling him soft, saying hes a bust. Hes a young kid and didnt go to a huge college so this is his 1st experience with all that and people having access to him. Imagine being that age, being so excited and committed to helping this team win for the fan base, and then having those same people who you wanted so bad to please tearing you down at every chance.

Thats a devastating realization... and for a kid that age - its easy to start to internalize those comments and start to believe them. You start thinking maybe I am soft, maybe I cant play in the NFL. maybe coach harbs is frustrated with me, maybe this wont ever heal and my careers over.

Lets stop looking at this like its reality TV... this is a kid who has great promise to help our team. We're proud to wear the designation of one of the best fan bases, so lets represent that. Show Breshad why its great to be a Raven; not make him resent the fan base so he isnt motivated to play for us.

Slow healers not a good thing in the NFL. They normally get left behind after a while.

He's not necessarily a slow healer. PCL tears, from what I gather, are just naturally slow healing injuries.

Yea, lets see how 21 year old you feels when thousands and thousands of people youve never met start tearing you down at every possible chance just bc you got injured. Especially when you wanted nothing more than to go compete for those same people and help win football games for them.

I mean look at the comments here: he's soft, he's a bust, better find receivers next year, don't count on Breshad doing anything, wasted pick... It's worse on twitter. And guarantee you he's seeing it. Even if you try to tune it out, you hear talk radio, people you know mention it to you when they see you.

Coming to the NFL went from being his dream come true, to learning the ugly reality of playing in the NFL. Some fans are ruthless and cross the line. All bc of an injury - a young me would definitely have a hard time dealing with that... and im man enough to admit that. Id be crushed if thousands of people that i just wanted to win for tore me down continuously all bc of something I had absolutely not control over.

im pretty sure losing wasent the only thing on his mind.

and it speaks volumes that a guy making millions is this much upset he cant play rather then sitting home counting all the money and thinking about how he is going to spend it all.

he could have been doing that you know.

seriously fans will always find something to complain about.

I guess you normally avoid talking to your family when you get upset then...

Thinking about it more. I'm just worried there's something else REALLY influencing this guy BESIDES football, something actually important. It's worth looking into.

I HOPE he's not just depressed about football, sounds unorthodox to lose movivation to do anything including talk to your parents over something like football. I've only been hard on him when I wasn't given the "full story". I'd rather he handle what ever issue he has instead of play football, I could care less if he ever plays again if he doesn't resolve whatever's going on.

People are different and they cope differently. Really not hard to get. Some people talk about their problems, some people are open. Some people keep it in. As someone who for a long time kept his problems to himself, I can sympathize with Breshad. How do you think it feels for him to be a first round receiver with all these preconceived notions that he's some manly football player? And then he's kept on the sideline by some injury, and fans call him soft and who knows what else? It's difficult for men in that position to open up. They feel they're not allowed to have weakness, so they keep it in.

I'm usually proud to be a Ravens fan... I look at other fan bases ridiculous comments about players and certain issues and am usually glad that typically my fan base is above that.

The way this whole Breshad thing has been handled from the get go is pretty ridiculous. The guy got bashed on twitter, these forums, talk radio... etc.. and now he comes forward to talk and he gets it even more because he reveals how much being away from football and not being able to play for us affected him?

He gets paid either way. Many a man would have smiled to not have to do anything for that fat pay check. This man couldnt stand it, and the people he is going to put his body abd health on the line for are ridiculing him for any little thing they can find. And honestly, I dont blame him for the whole black hole. between the fans reactions and even Harbs comments where he made it seem like Breshad was choosing to sit out or something; he probably couldnt understand why his coach wasnt sticking up for him.

Let him at least play, and judge him on how he plays football. That's at least something he has control over... All this bashing over the rate at which an injury healed and how he handled a very difficult situation in his life

when i first went to college i didnt answer my parents phone calls for like 2 months. Oh man, there's something really wrong with me.

this is like a bunch of little girls and their reality shows, dissecting every little comment as if theres something deep and underlying there.

Can we talk football and not try to diagnose Breshad physically and mentally?

Shoot - you're all dissing Breshad bc youre worried about a possible mental health issue.... YET THIS ENTIRE FAN BASE WANTED BRANDON MARSHALL THIS OFFSEASON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The freaking NFL poster child for mental illness.

I'll say it again. Lets let the kid play, and judge him based on that.

As soon as he revealed that the team was just insanely incompetent I don't think many people were still upset with him.

If anything, the anger should be shifted to the team and Harbaugh.

Maybe you haven't read many of the posts here. He would not talk to his own parents and Harbaugh. He even admitted

he was in a "dark hole" which implies depression.

It's perfectly ok to be unhappy about his situation but this 'dark hole" is at a completely different level

and is a big reason why the front office better get receiver help next year big time.

Get one like Brandon Marshall??? Like the guy who's been the most manic depressed, bipolar guy in the NFL.

That kind of receiver help, like 99% of the fan base was calling for in the offseason?

Makes sense.

Look I hope this kid becomes a PRO Bowler and Hall of Famer . I want him to succeed . I am a Ravens fan after all  .

But it is simply not natural to turn your personal family and your football family away while dealing with this injury.

If you think it is well i think you will be in the minority.

That being said ,Breshad if you are reading these posts ,I wish you well and am hoping you have a speedy recovery and

make everyone with doubts, including me, very very wrong.

At this point I'm not even really concerned with Perriman as a "player" I'm more concerned with his general wellbeing and I'm PISSED at the team and Harbaugh for doing what they did to Breshad, U.S., media, his fam, etc.

its really not strange....

That's where me, you and others disagree.

Some of us see going into a DEEP depression to the point that you can't even talk to the people that litterally MADE you over something like football a little strange. I just don't want the dude feeling that way. You're a NFL player! Feel happy about that. You shouldn't get THAT down over an injury. It's REALLY not healthy.

Like I've been thinking, this isn't about football. There might be something else much bigger going on.
