NFL Admits Officiating Error - Winning Field Goal Should Not Have Happened

68 posts in this topic

I liked this comment on PFT, brings up a pretty good point. The NFL could correct the call by erasing the FG and giving us the win, 20-19 but that's wishful thinking.

A few people seem to be confused by this. Had the false start been called, the play would have been blown dead. So the sack/facemask would not have happened. The play never would have gotten underway.

Then – with the 10 second runoff the clock would have expired.

Here you have a clear chance to correct a mistake. The victory can in fact be awarded to the Ravens because there is no further plays that would have happened.

I'm actually more happy with the outcome. Better position. What does it really matter anyway if we won? We just struggles with the Jags at home after a bye. What the hell are we going to do against real teams down the line?

I concurrrrrrrrrr…………………….

I agree with some. It's funny to me that they're happy with the win, but in their defense, 7-8 wins could maybe win them the South.

I'm glad (now) that we lost. If we end up with a top 5 pick, I could see Ozzie trading down and trying to milk it. Draft talk starts very early this year. Look at it this way. Think about what our last awful season triggered...

I don't care. It's whatever. I think the referees should be penalized, however, for these mistakes and the NFL held accountable. If this game meant something then it would've been a problem--a real problem. The referees have been terrible this year.

It DOES mean something. Jags took over 1st place with that win. I'm sure the Colts are none too happy. What if we win out the rest of the way and this loss means we miss the playoffs?

Jags don't have 1st and we're not winning out. WE LOST TO THE JAGS AT HOME AFTER THE BYE.

Colts have a better record than the Jaguars.

What if we do? Take your pick of any of the other bad losses on our resume. Do we have a justification for losing at home after 10 days off to the Browns?

I don't think it sets a bad precedent. I'm a Duke fan and feel we should've gotten the win against Miami. I think it should be done if it's the last okay of a game where there could be no other outcome, but that's neither here nor there.

Why do people want this win anyway. We're not going anywhere and they can still win their division? Who cares? We need the draft position.

As a PSL holder I go to watch my team win, this mess started with the NE game last year, the the Cardinals now the Jags. How can the NFL keep raising prices and expecting us to happily pay out. What about the integrity of the game that Goodell talks about?

I think Ravens fans are a bit spoiled with the success since 2008 and to reload with a low draft pick, it's just painful to watch.

You're right. My bad. Brought them to 1 game out (1/2 game technically I guess).

Still, it does mean something in that division.

I'm surprised you have the stomach to read PFT comments

I don't normally want people to be fired but damn are the officials making it very difficult. They've been absolutely poor in almost every game.

Its really much ado about nothing....clock running down, team trying to get a play off..........if the shoe were on the other foot we wouldn't want a 10 second runoff to end the game for us.  As a matter of principle the 10 second runoff should be abolished. What does the NFL think a team is going to do......continue penalties against itself to sustain drives. Come on man.

Having watched the video, its safe to say the line was in position and the snap was a microsecond early....with all the hurry up going on around the league I don't want shell shocked Zebra Clowns making microsecond violation determinations.

The Ravens simply need to take their medicine.  This was a home game against the woeful Jags and we had a bye.  What ever happened to the 20 point win.  As a team we are in Point Arrears.  Come on, enough of the "its been a tough year".

Bingo right there.

Lost to Jags after a BYE, lost to the Browns after a mini-BYE, both at home. Face it, we're a bottom 5 team this year.

Bottom 5? I think you are rating us too high.

And with this officiating some still think that the NFL is putting a great product on the field. Unbelievable.

Can't blame the officials. They aren't given any 'realistic' guidance, training or professional standards to comply with. Completely inconsistant, subjective, revolving judgement calls that change week-to-week.  It's amateur posing as exceptable at best.

That lack of training is their own fault. They didn't want the NFL to make any changes in their side jobs of being refs. That is what the whole temp ref issue was about.

The NFL makes that decision. It is solely responsible for the product - not part-time workers.

Only thing I am annoyed with is that the refs get away with screwing up another game this season. Losing this one doesn't really matter to me. We played like crap.

True. Yet, if the league would take actions to (for example) create a farm-league (B-League), recruit a professional class of young refs with competitive wages/contracts/union and train them (4 years) through this farm system, maybe these types of amateur game making errors could be minimized. I think it 'screwing up another game...' is more significant to the sports bottom line than whether the team has a winning record or not. Just ask Vegas, fans and NFL historians. The integrity of the game is in question as a multi-billion profit margin grows.

My wife had a great idea.

The reffs should hold a presser after each game.

If the players have to explain them selves, it would be very interesting in deed for the reff to do so as well.

I mean it doesn't really mean much for us. I have to admit I don't see us making the playoffs this year so I don't think this will impact us much.

The refs this year has been especially awful.   Time to throw the bozos in the can and hire guys that are competent.

And where do you find said "competent guys"?

Hint: its a trick question.

the league is taking for us.

i rather have them do it for us then our players doing it themselves.

feel bad for them though.

poor doom especially.

Just do you guys know, the NFL has taken action against the officiating crew for our game before. They did the Steelers-Chargers MNF game earlier and after some clock issues in that one, the league suspended the sideline judge and downgraded Pete Morellis' crew.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/11/17/will-nfl-take-action-against-morellis-crew-again/

So wonder if they will punish them more after this and possibly reverse the decision since essentially the play shouldn't have happened.
