NFL Admits Officiating Error - Winning Field Goal Should Not Have Happened

68 posts in this topic

Sunday, the Jaguars beat the Ravens on a field goal that came on an untimed down after time expired due to penalty.

Monday, the NFL acknowledged that that field goal never should have happened and that the last timed play of the game should have been blown dead because the Jaguars weren’t set.

NFL Spokesman Michael Signora said that officials erred in allowing the play to go on despite all 11 Jaguars not being

Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse.

Lmao.

What were we saying last night arnie?

it just didn't look right live, I couldn't tell who it was but they just weren't right. Flag had to go there, but it shouldn't have been an issue. Lewis should have been running out the stadium with the game ball lol

Meh. The Ravens weren't set to go on some epic run anyways. If anything we just got a better draft position thanks to this. Besides, good teams don't let games come down to a single call.

I'm actually more happy with the outcome. Better position. What does it really matter anyway if we won? We just struggles with the Jags at home after a bye. What the hell are we going to do against real teams down the line?

The thing is, they can't give the Ravens the win, so what does it even matter?

I guess it matters from a job performance/evaluation perspective. I don't get what is going on, the officials are botching so many things lately ...

I'd say they could deny this crew meaningful games, but I guess it doesn't get much more meaningless than the Ravens and Jags. Problem is, there appears to be about 3 or 4 crews that don't screw up on a grand scale and 14 games to be played each week.

Well that's a relief, isn't it? I don't really see a benefit to releasing that kind of information. I mean, are they going to give us a win instead of a loss? No? Well then, thanks.

I didn't even care about the outcome of the game but I hate nonsense like this. And I don't buy the "well don't put yourself in the position to have the refs decide the game" garbage. The refs should get the calls right, period.

And to think last night I said "don't blame the refs." Guess those who did were right all along.

But as some people have already said, this team wasn't going to make the playoffs regardless of yesterday's result. Better draft position, I can live with it.

Bingo right there.

Lost to Jags after a BYE, lost to the Browns after a mini-BYE, both at home. Face it, we're a bottom 5 team this year.

If we had been fighting for a playoff spot right now I would be pissed right now. But this just fits right with everything else that's happened this season. Still annoying how bad refs have been lately, especially against us.

Ok but we can sit here and say all we want that the Ravens didn't deserve to win the game anyway or this or that. But the bottom line is in the end, the refs cost us the game. We had the lead on the final possession and the game should have been over had It been called correctly. Whether or not we turn the ball over four times or kept the Jags in the game or any of that doesn't change the fact that when the clock struck zero the Ravens should have won the game and been 3-6.

The referees in the NFL this year have done more harm to the game than any year previous. They have been allowed to decide the outcome of games far too often. They have no idea what constitutes a catch, what constitutes forward motion stoppage, and what constitutes good defense vs pass interference. So why do we give the refs of break here simply because we are angry at our own team and their field performance?

1. The ref's have been PUTRID this year.

2. I don't care that they missed it, I want a high pick. I wouldn't care if we didn't win another game at this point.

1. Because they are humans and make mistakes, just like the players on the field make mistakes (and I assure you the mistakes the players make outweigh the mistakes the refs make by a gigantic number).

2. Because the only real accountability that matters to fans is for officials to be fired from their jobs, which means we get replacement officials. And while this fanbase is notorious for its extremely short memory, I'd encourage all to revisit what it was like to have replacement officials doing these games. It gets worse, not better.

Thanks NFL.

Thanks. Because we know nothing will be done about this. We get no compensation and the refs dont care and the head office doesn't care.

Atleast give us a Jags draft pick or suspend a referee.

I'm ticked off. A win is a win is a win. Regardless of what else we should've done... We did do enough to overcome the 4 turnovers, dropped interceptions, penalties and the decision to go for it on 4th instead of taking the points.

The Jags, according to the rules failed to do what it took to get in position to kick a game winning FG. The clock struck zero on their chance, yet were handed the game.

Sure we'd only be 3-6. But we'd be a 3-6 team that had an improving defense and an offense that moved the ball well. If the team that played Sunday cut out the turnovers, that's a team with a legitimate shot to win any given weekend.

Chances are our sloppiness would come back to haunt us in at least a few future games... But now to no fault of our own we've been stripped of a 3-6 record.

A 3-6 record that would've still been within an earshot of the wild card.

You can't say we didn't deserve to win, because we won. With all the mistakes we were still better than the Jags.

Saying man if we would've just kicked that FG instead of going for it on 4th we would've won... That's completely hypothetical. Who knows if we would've made it, or how the game would've changed from there.

This should have definitely ended the game with us up 1. No other possible alternatives. And that's garbage. Wins are hard enough to come by - when you actually get one and it's straight up stolen, it's disheartening. We got robbed.

I don't care. It's whatever. I think the referees should be penalized, however, for these mistakes and the NFL held accountable. If this game meant something then it would've been a problem--a real problem. The referees have been terrible this year.

You know...that's a reasonable response.  We were not going to run the table with the troubles we have.

I'm not even concerned they may not have been set. The Pats play all kinds of formation "Games" and the refs don't rein them in either.  I think the Refs have reacted to having their on the field decisions reviewed by calling the game very tight in regard to holding during running plays, quasi motion or non set and tight in regard to illusory head safety or low hit violations.  I'm really fatigued with the number of flags those strip-id clowns throw anyway.

And I'm going to leave this here:

http://jungle.jaguars.com/index.php?/topic/15223-nfl-says-we-should-have-lost-the-game/

Karma for the Ravens late hit on Bortles that wasn't penalized...not to mention some of the most blatant PI no calls I've seen this season in the red zone yesterday.

I mean if the NFL wants to start this crap of announcing the calls that weren't made maybe they would want to talk about the long run by Flacco to extend a drive earlier in the game where there were at least 2 holds that weren't called? No? Didn't think so. Ridiculous they would even mention this. There are several missed calls in every game.

This is really ridiculous. These calls happen every game but its announced because the Jaguars won. Any other team and nobody would hear of this. Its really tiresome.

Refs screw up another game, what else is new. Nothing gets done when they screw up games and dictate them certain ways so of course it doesn't matter now. Again when the refs can't see things that are plain as day to fans at the stadium and at home and know they made a wrong call. This is getting beyond stupid with the refs, every week it's something else. They don't know what a catch is, now they don't know what forward progress is and now they can't even get false start penalties right.

The NFL needs to start suspending/firing officials who get calls wrong and constantly make incorrect calls and still doesn't correct it when in fact it needed to be overturned.
