[News] Late For Work 11/16: P-Word Officially Banned From Ravens Facility

140 posts in this topic

The hit that Hill put on the Jags receiver was a no-brainer penalty in this league. However, how in the world is the hit on Aiken not a blow to the head of a defenseless receiver? Is there a rule I don't know about where a receiver is not defenseless if they bobble a ball they should have caught? Give us 15 yards instead of an INT ... that's game changing. But refs never let us get away with it, but periodically seem to just not be watching when it happens to us. It seems based on reputation. Once you get marked as an undisciplined team, the refs put your team under a microscope.

I was thinking that the whole time! Why wasn't the hit to the head of a defenseless receiver not called? I am not saying we didn't play horrible but that was a game changing call that was obviously missed.

Turnover of coaches has finally caught up with us. Seemed like we were supplying the league with head coaches and coordinators. Somewhere along the way the toughness was replaced with finesse. No Passion. No one is afraid to play the Ravens anymore. No one on our current roster strikes fear in their hearts. Its a combination of things that has led to this, one being enjoying a lot of success the past 6 or 7 years. Bad drafting has caught up with us. All is not lost , i think in time we can turn it around. Lets hope. Go Ravens

I want to know on the deep ball to Givens if it was supposed to be a backshoulder throw and Givens missed it, or it Joe didn't lead Givens into the endzone and threw it short. Joe usually does not throw it short and he does not call out his receivers publicly.... If you are reading this and can ask about it, I want to know.

The other int was due to a helmet to helmet hit to the head, not a great throw but the int should have been reversed.

On the balance of run vs. pass. Given who we have to throw to, defenses are absolutely stacked in the box. They are daring us to throw. You can either run into a brick wall or take what they are giving you.

At this point ... whatever - we have to see what WR we have who can reliably get separation and catch the ball and the answer is coming back "nobody".

I don't buy it.  We do have guys that can catch.  If we didn't, Joe wouldn't be throwing for 300+ yards a game.  Additionally, we're talking about the same backfield and line that ran the heck out of the ball last season.  Granted, we had Torrey and SSS, so the passing game was more robust.  But you hear it over and over on Sundays...you can't give up on the run.  I just question the fact that we pass, pass, pass, a lot of intermediate routes and passes to the flats, and the defense has to adjust and generally does...but then we might run once or twice in a drive and just go back to the pass.  There needs to be more of a balance overall.  Look, when I can call the play from my living room before it happens because we do the same thing every Sunday, what do you think opposing DCs and defenders are doing?  They're salivating.

That's an unfair way of evaluating the skill level of those players. We will never know how this team could have excelled over the past 3 years had Joe had the stability and consistency with his recievers. We as fans often comfort ourselves by watching our players that leave underachieve on their new teams. That is just a way to make ourselves feel better. Jacoby excelled here because we didnt really ask him to be a WR. He had a job and did it well. Same goes for many of our pass rushing specialists. They fit a need on our team and did it well only to come up short trying to expand their role on a new team. Boldin allowed Joe to just throw it up and Torrey allowed Joe to go deep often with either a big catch or PI call. It is obvious now how much Flacco needs receivers of those types.

Not a dig on you but The whole "Torrey Smith" thing is really getting old. As a matter of fact, that is one of the smarter moves that we have made was to let him go. No way he is or was worth the money he wanted and thought he deserved.

time to start drafting guys that will be vocal leaders like ray and ed and back it up on the field. this team has talent but it needs play making talent. players that will be game changers like reed with his ball hawking. what happened to the running game in one year. o-line was dominant and now it cannot open holes and allows flacco to be hit at a high rate. need a new dc and some new position coaches plus trestman must be more aggressive. drafting better players will make a huge difference.

Our defense needs a total makeover, with guys that actually care more about football than how cool they can look on the field. We need guys that simply have a passion for the game, and guys that will play angry. These guys we have now just want to sit back and take credit for donning a ravens jersey & Helmet.

It's my fault, I forgot to upload that video again of Ray Lewis giving the locker room speech. Because these guys have tunnel ears, in one, out the other.

I am not trying to knock Dumerville. The guy is a great player and we need him and everyone is entitled to a mistake. However, I don't hear anyone saying what to me is obvious: we didn't need a sack! The clock had expired. At that point, only a TD could have saved Jacksonville. Doom didn't need a sack. Grabbing the mask is an act of desperation, and we weren't desperate! The clock was at :00. Game over unless he puts the ball in the endzone. Doom should have eased up, maybe even let him make a pass or run the ball. They were 55 yards away from the endzone with no time left. No sack required.

I put this loss on the offense. All they had to do was attempt to get 1 first down on their last drive. If they get it the game would have been over. They didn't even try to get a first down but instead tried to burn the clock. It just seemed as if the coaching staff had no faith in the offense to try and get that last first down. That's a major issue within itself. We had nothing to lose at this point so why play that conservative? It just makes me wonder sometimes... "

I totally agree!! You have to win the game when the opportunity is there. We had that chance on our last offensive drive. We had just gotten a first down with some aggressive play-calling. Had we gotten 1 more first down, we could have salted the clock away. Instead what did we do? We ran 2 dives right into the line, knowing Jacksonville was set to stop the run. On 3rd and 10, we throw a short 5 yard pass, not even looking beyond the first down markers. I told my son before the 3rd down play that if we don't go for the first down and either run or throw a short pass, then we have just lost the game; I knew the Jags would rally back to field goal range and their kicker would make amends for his earlier PAT miss. We just cannot trust our current defense as it is led and staffed, to make a game saving stop. It is just not going to happen. Even if it takes a "no time on the clock" facemask penalty to do it.Why can't our coach get this through his head and stop putting the pressure on this weak D? The same thing happened in Week 2 in Oakland. We had a chance to salt away the clock with under 2 minutes left. We could have gotten a first down inside the 5 yard line but instead our coach decided to throw passes for the endzone, all of which were incomplete and stopped the clock for Oakland who was down to 1 timeout. We kicked a field goal, giving them over a minute to drive down the field against a non-existent defense and score without even using their timeout. How many times will our coach continue to use this strategy before he realizes that he doesn't have #52, #20, #55, and #92 playing for him? Coach the team you do have, and realize that they cannot play like the studs you've had in the past. Also, their defensive schemes are not good enough to stop opposing teams when they need to.

Insanity: Constantly repeating the same actions expecting a different result.

Easier said that done. It would be nice to know what this guys will be before drafted. You don't know how good hall-of-famers are until you lose 2 of them to retirement and one to injury (Sizzle). We look average at best on a week-to-week basis on defense.

It was a very unfortunate mistake yes, but to blame Dumervil for this loss is just an excuse for a poor season. What about the other 6 games?

Play the rookies and get ready for next year. If the ravens had any sense they'd tank and get a high draft pick. This team is lacking the big play makers on defense. This is a young team with some good players. The TE group alone will shine for years to come. But they need another Reed type in the secondary. That will take a top 5 pick. this is the pefect year to get that. Don't screw that up too.

Can't blame the Defense like a lot of people want to believe! I didn't see the game but when I saw the Ravens didn't try to put the game away and wanted the Defense to seal it I knew it was a wrap! Joe gotta go he is making the entire team look bad!

He's also carrying this offense on his back... which you wouldn't know since you didn't watch the game.

I think we are the only team in the NFL arrogant enough to talk about the playoffs at 2-6 (or 2-7) whatever? Yes... we have 5 of our final 8 games at home. Yes they schedule is softer on the back end. Yes... we are motivated to show people that the first 8 games is not who we are. Yes... most of those 6 or 7 loses were very winnable... but lets be honest. We lost them. We continue to lose close games. We continue to struggle to close teams out. We lost more weapons. On paper some things looked good for us but in reality things haven't looked good for us for some time. We make stupid penalties constantly. We give up as many free yards as any team in the league. We cant buy a turn over. We are averaging giving up 27 points per game. We have done NOTHING to correct the areas that we are weak and we continue to try to pound the same square peg into a round hole! The defition of insanity is doing the same things over and over expecting a different result. I am reading some of the articles that come out and I cant help but to think that we are currently insane. Nothing has changed and as a result... neither has the results. We keep losing! No matter how it looks on paper! Something needs to change and I say it starts with Dean Pees.... until then we are simply trying to pound that square per into a round hole!

I cant believe the people saying Joe gotta go? I get that he makes mistakes and I am the first one to say that he has been in the league too long for some of the dumb mistakes that he makes... but gotta go? 1. He has had at least 4 different OC in 4 years! (maybe even more) What other QB has had to learn a new system every season and play well? 2. Joe has less weapons then any other major QB in the NFL. I was watching the Jags game and found myself thinking... I would love to see Joe with some of those weapons (and that's the Jags)! Of course Joe makes some mistakes... who wouldn't under those circumstances? 3. To add to the first two... Our OL has been makeshift at best. Monroe has more injuries then Evil Knevil and Hurst just isn't a starting LT in this league. Zuttah has missed a few and while Urschel is a solid back up he is not a Center. Joe has taken a beating this season and just keeps ticking. 4. Joe don't miss games. Look at Ben in Pittsburgh. Yeah he is great and all but for half a season every year... you cannot count on him! He is always injured. That is just not so with Joe... The guy don't miss games! Week in and week out... we can count on Joe... I for one would love to see us give the guys some weapons for next year. Bring Trestman back and shore up some depth on the OL or do something with Monroe. I think if we do that Joe will have a career next season and who knows from there! It does us no good to invest big money in a QB if we are not going to take care of him and you do that in three ways 1. Provide consistency (system) 2. Protect him (OL) 3. Give him weapons (WR). We are truthfully failing Joe / not the other way around!

Not the point. The point is that all of this talk is pure hindsight.

For starters, there really is no difference between Boldin and Steve Smith at this point in their careers. They have nearly identical skill sets, only SSS is cheaper. The reason this is being brought up NOW is because SSS is on IR and Boldin isn't, and thus, unless you have a time machine, you can't possibly make this judgment.

Similarly, Torrey Smith is a one trick pony who is literally the first WR I recall ever being referenced as quality due almost entirely to his ability to draw pass interference penalties. The mere idea of that being mentioned as a "skill set", despite it being completely unsustainable, is an indictment of the player himself. Naturally, we basically drafted the exact same player, yet again, being cheaper. And once again, absent of a time machine, we can't possibly know that the outcome would result in both of the cheaper, arguably better replacement players basically being on IR. Pure hindsight to suggest that we miss these guys, when we made a very solid effort to replace them.

Bernard Pollard isn't even worth discussing, because Will Hill is better than him and Pollard is so good that 32 NFL teams don't think he's good enough to play for them right now. That's sort of an argument killer.

No worries

I understand what you are saying. I'm only pointing out that you cant make the argument for past players based on what they are doing on their current teams if you wont at least concider the effect staying may have had on their careers in Baltimore.

Also, the "argurment killer" you state about Pollard has no relevance as I never mentioned him.

Correct, you didn't. It was mentioned by the OP who you responded to.

I could make a case that Jacoby is irrelevant too, because he's been a kick returner every where he has been for the last 2 seasons now, and not a very good one at that.

I agree with you. I am not one of those fans who has been saying "if we only had Torrey and Bolden..." I am only making the statement that we need to stop saying that "insert player" isnt playing well after they left so Ozzie made the right call. Those players excelled here because of the system. A lot of them would have continued to excell here but the cap is the cap.

He's also carrying this offense on his back... which you wouldn't know since you didn't watch the game.

This needs to be brought up more. When people say Flacco isn't good, if he was like Brady he would make his recievers better. Well look what happened to Brady yesterday when he lost Eddleman, got much worse and he still had Gronk and Amendola. Flacco has Aiken who Brady couldn't elevate in 2 years, and he is WR#1 at the top of the Ravens depth chart. He has no Gronk, no Amednola, no one. His TE#1 is a sophomore player, first year starter, his TE2 and TE3 are rookies. Pats O-Line is crumbling like ours, Pats D similar. So I would say Flacco is doing quite well and why I'm nearly screaming for the answer to this:

Was the int throw to Givens a designed Back shoulder thow that Givens missed or was it Joe underthrowing Givens?

Joe usually does not leave the ball short, if anything it is usually high and long. He did appear to underthorw Givens (two?) games ago, and now I wonder if that was meant to be a comeback ball. Givens was traded out of St. Louis for a reason, was it route running? I'm all for the guy, and hope he does well, but I want to know what the deal is.

I just keep remembering Boldin and TJ Whosoutatheleagenow both dropping game winners in the endzone in Pitt, and Lee Evans dropping the winner in NE both in the playoffs. Even Mace running routes the wrong way and Flacco getting intercepted because of it and he still would not throw his receivers under the bus.

Half of me wonders if the Sun article on Flacco not throwing anyone under the bus last week was a shot at Gary when in response Peyton threw Gary, Dennison (OC), his reciever, and his line under the bus on an interception all before taking just the loosest blame himself. I wonder what Gary is thinking now in Denver.

Pox on Elway.
