[News] Eisenberg: Mystery Solved In Tale Of Two Teams

18 posts in this topic

Turnovers and making teams pay for blitzing were the two things that were heavily emphasized this offseason and ironically it's the two things we suck the most at.

So the Ravens have been self scouting over the bye week, asking themselves what they can do differently to create more turnovers. "But opportunism isn't an easy thing to coach", implying that it's just the players fault. Not giving a 10 yard cushion to every receiver and changing the coverage certainly IS coachable. If I see our secondary continue to play 5-10 yards off the receiver, we will solidify our bottom feeder status in turnover ratio, not to mention that I may officially go insane from the torture of witnessing the same old, same old coverage. I hope that the self scouting during the bye also focused on the coaches play calling and schemes which need to change in order to put our secondary in better positions to even have a shot at being successfully "opportunistic". There's no way these turnover failures are 100% on the shoulders of the players alone.

Defensive backs are just embarrassing. How do you play the ball when you arent even close enough and cant even turn around to locate it. High (1st-2nd rd) DB is priority in offseason. Outside of Jimmy Smith we have a trash filled backfield of Cbs and SS/FS. just clueless and giving up long plays 24/7

As long as Pees is in charge in BMORE ... our defense will always under achieve. We wont get turn overs... we wont close teams out.. we wont get off of the field on 3rd down... we wont win consistently. Pees gotta go!

It isn't as much as forcing turnovers either but the critical junctures we turned the ball over as well. It is a misleading statistic unless one factors in the timing of these turnovers too. You can't ever give the ball away just as much as you want to take the ball away. We've failed on both counts so far this season.

2-6 and still no one has been fired. Funny to think this team can win out...Harbs is clueless

Guess you take up permanent residence in your backyard.

It shouldn't be surprising. When your receivers have no speed and can't get off single, press coverage, it makes it extremely difficult to make teams pay for blitzing. When you lose 2 of your top 3 pass rushers, your secondary is horrible, and they play so far off the ball, you're not going to force many turnovers.

Pretty much hit the nail on the head, we ca 't seem to get turnovers.

Our 3rd down defense is also pretty bad from what I recall. Every 3rd down conversion is a turnover in a way as the opponent gets 4 more plays as opposed to giving you the ball back(although they do change field position by punting).

ted monachino or marylands own jim schwartz for dc. pees is not the guy for the organized chaos we want to run but in his defense he does not have all the horses needed to have a top 5 defense. the front office has let too many up and coming players leave knowing that suggs and doom are pushing mid 30's and on the verge of declining play. for every last second signing the front office has made that has worked out and allowed us to praise ozzie and the fo they have dropped the ball on several draft picks and passed over players that they should have drafted. they need to step it up in next years draft especially with us possibly drafting in the top 6

If I see another person claiming Pees is "doing a good job" I'll shove them this article down their sorry throat! Pees is a joke! Don't get me wrong, he does his job, but just barely. But Pagano or Ryan would have put up record setting results with this defense we have. That's the problem with Pees! Insted of using his defense to the fullest potential he blames his players for poor performance. Pees is a damn joke! A ridicules excuse for DC! Pathetic.

I agree. Not sure, but I seem to remember reading somewhere that the Ravens were last in the NFL in third down defense. Throw that in w/all the three-and-outs from the Offense, w/being last in turnovers and that pretty much wraps it up. I hope things get better for the second half of the season, but there is just too much to fix. I also think it's time for Oz to retire. He's had a great run, but it's time for him to ride off into the sunset, along w/other major changes. It is what it is.

Well written article.

I have been one pounding the table for Offensive weapons for years now. This year I honestly felt the defense was going to be the better unit. However it has been a Bizaro topsy-turvy season. The Ravens offense is better than the defense, despite NOT having the playmakers I so coveted.

I now see the wisdom is Ozzies defensive minded drafts (for really his whole tenure). The secondary picks have just not panned out.

I still would have liked a 1-3 round WR in the 2014 draft (greatest WR draft prospect in the history of the NFL), but that is crying over spilled milk really.

Bottom line the games have been close, a little more offensive weapons and we might be 4-4, no better. (Pitta's injury is really the worst thing possible as the Ravens have spent 3 draft picks the past two years to replace him.) Suggs injury is big, the defense has looked very average since his injury. Adding to the defense for that stifling defense again really does look like a good plan going forward.

Great article and has given me hope for the future
