[News] Late For Work 11/10: 'Wolverine-Blooded' Steve Smith Undergoes Surgery

31 posts in this topic

To the Flacco bashers I have often said don't put too much weight on how many yards Joe throws. If we are running late in the game, that means we are winning. For every season since Joe has been here up to this year, we have not had a losing season so it makes sense we were doing a lot of running and not so much passing. The only time we have been running successfully and Joe was close to 4000 yards was last year with Kubiak. Now we see why Cutler and Stafford and those guys throw 4000 and 5000 yard seasons because they are always losing and they have to throw the ball to cath up. I would rather we win and Joe throw for 3000 yards than to lose and expect him to throw for 4000 but along with that comes 20 interceptions.

No one should be surprised that we're dead LAST on 3rd down defense.  We could easily be in the AFC mix if we were able to get off the field at a decent percentage on 3rd down.

"After all, according to Harbaugh, the defense has had a hard time covering Pitta in practice these last few weeks."

Does this say really good things about Pitta, or really bad things about our defense?

Nice clip on Ray Rice. The NFL will squander a great opportunity and resource if they do not find a way to involve Ray Rice in their Domestic Violence prevention efforts as he has offered to do. There is no better person than Ray to show others what DV can cost them their and the impact on their victims. Ray Rice cannot be doing any more to do his part to bring awareness to the issue despite the cold shoulder from the NFL. Ray is the first to acknowledge how wrong and inexcusable his actions were. I doubt if there is any player who could get through to other NFL players on this issue more than Ray Rice. The NFL should see Ray for the potential positive impact he could have to use their powerful national exposure and platform to maximize efforts against DV among players and the general public. If the NFL is sincere about DV, beyond occasional ads to reflect the image that "the NFL cares about DV", while allowing other DV players to continue to play, they should at least take Ray Rice up on his offer to make an impact through the NFL among players. Nobody in the entire NFL could effect possible change and awareness more than Ray for what is at stake both professionally and personally. If national organizations dedicated to the prevention of DV support Ray's efforts and sincerity, why won't the NFL embrace this unique opportunity with Ray to try something meaningful that could actually have a real impact ? If the NFL is sincere about dealing with this problem, they should support this obvious effort towards a real solution and create some good out of this bad situation.

Thank you very much. I'd like to see Joe's bashers respond to your excellent post.

The TV show "Ravens Talk" mentions this a lot.

To put it much more simple: presently, the Chargers have the statistically best O in the league. And they are last in their division and have little to no chance for the playoffs...

That's how much a good offense has to do with success, in itself.

YES, we got Terrence West back for nothing! Thanks for trading up to take him Cleveland! And that's why your Cleveland and we now have your 3rd round draft pick where he wanted to be all along!!! Yippee!

Agree. Was it just me ? Watching the Charger game it seemed that Steve Young, Mike Tirico and of course John Gruden were giving every excuse possible for the Chargers record being 2-7. Mostley they were repeating that the team was injury riddled and changes were made to some coaches, just an outcry of sympathy. They have a love fest for Rivers, I guess that makes the difference.

Somebody really needs to explain to me what the difference is between Hardy having a job and Rice not even getting a workout. Two different attitudes about DV. Rice being contrite and apologetic and Hardy being brash and ignorant. I just do not get it.

I can't explain it either because it makes no sense. Bottom line, Ray Rice is the 1 who has shown that he is a decent, caring human being. Rice is the player out there raising awareness for DV and other issues and helping his community despite being ostracized. I feel really bad for Ray and he has done all he can to make amends to the league, the fans, the community and his family. The person who actively redeems himself and shows character is the 1 not playing or even allowed to help the NFL make positive changes. SMH

Last in 3rd Down defense doesn't surprise me after watching the first 8 games, but that is a truly embarrassing stat to own. This defense has to step up.

Well ? I hope the new Defensive signals work ! Just have to tighten up 3rd Down plays and get the Offense back on the Field. That is the "plain and simple" of the situation. We aren't a terrible team. We just haven't been an efficient team. Correcting a few things here and there can be the difference makers. We could turn those Losses of 5 Points on the average....into 2 Point or 7 point Wins. Curtail the needless penalties. Make those Defensive stops on 3rd Downs. Do a better job with the Run and Pass Blocking.

Get the Offense generating early successes.

Let's see what this team is made of for the next 2 months !

It can be explained in one word, "video".

I think we all know, If Rice did what he did but it was NEVER captured on video, he's still a Raven.

Seeing something happen and hearing about something happen changes how people view certain issues.

simple.

in order to make a shallow example of him, the NFL already burned their one witch hunt pretending that Rice was a monster rather than a guy who (as rare as this kind of thing is in these situations) made one very uncharacteristic mistake in a blurry situation.

Now that they did that, and screwed it up royally with that whole double jeopardy thing, they dont have that card in the deck anymore to use on a guy who seems to really deserve it.

to the league's credit, they were at least gonna put him out for 10 games. The players union wrecked that.

Its pretty simple.  The last year that rice played he had a terrible season.  That combined with the fact that running backs fall off in their late twenties and younger cheeper options are available led to Rice not getting a chance.  This compared to hardy who plays a premium position in which he dominated the last full season he played.

I miss Steve Smith already and it was just the bye week :( I truly wish he did have wolverine blood, which causes instant healing on the spot right before your eyes and he would have jumped right back up and been out next play call :) but...I get Justin Forsetts point and it's a cute and (metaphorically) accurate assessment of SSS durability...if only we could see him back out there this year. Still, our other receivers are getting into grooves. NFL pundits say without smith we're toast this rest of season, I think they are way underestimating the Ravens. I hope Pitta can play, he was always good in third down situations, which is a role Steve did well here too. Well, at least wait is over on Pitta, official announcement coming soon!

jravens - you said it (I was going to). I mean I know we played some close games this year, but to go 8 - 0 the rest of the way, we'd have to change that stat from 47 percent (opp. 3rd down conv.) to like 20 percent and right away. Then we'd have to start covering receivers a lot better and getting 4 sacks / game which isn't going to happen. Long story short, those changes would all have to happen and prob. more likely that none of them will change enough to win more than 4 out of the 8, half of our remaining games to finish at 6 - 10 for the year.

Without the photos, I would have agreed with you but the photos in my opinion were just as damaging and disgusting as a video. Notice Hardy hasn't even disputed ANY of the photo evidence or the "pay off" aspect of this. This guy should not be playing for any team. He should be banned. Just my opinion.
