David Carr Showing "Old School" Ravens D Some Love....

22 posts in this topic

Just finished watching a segment on the NFL Network where David Carr answered questions that was sent in to him.  Love his responses.....

Question #1: Who was the best trash talker you ever played with or against?

Answer: "Anyone that played for the Baltimore Ravens.  I think that they were inspired by Ray Lewis' noise and they wanted to make some of their own.  So they were always talking trash!"

Question #2: Who was the toughest D/D player you ever faced and why"

Answer: "We're going to stay with the Ravens team here and go with Ed Reed cause you never knew where he was going to be!  The guy was a tremendous player!  You'd think he'd be in the middle of the field and you go to throw a slant to Andre Johnson and he's knocking it down or hitting him in the face.  So, tremendous player and the guy you always got to be afraid of!

That is cool, I want that kind of intimidation factor back. Funny thing is Carr only played us twice ('02 and '05, both losses, with 0 TD and 3 INTs), and Ray wasn't on the field for the 2005 game.

Those legends made a huge impression. Those defenses were scary to opposing offenses and they preyed on lesser players and QBs and made great ones look average.

It's obviously extremely hard to cultivate that. Maybe some day people will talk about CJ Mosley, Brandon Williams, etc in the same way.

Ed was feared by all QBs......dag I miss him.

Not sure being known as "best trash talker" is a good thing.  IDK, just not something I consider important.

I loved those defenses. Talked trash and backed it up. Now no one talks and for good reason.

I like it. I liked it when Ray and Ed would get in other players' heads like Sherman does today. We need some defensive players with attitudes.

Swagger and confidence, no doubt.  Just not a fan of the trash talk, not my style.

Line up and hit em' in the mouth, no need to run your mouth.

Those legends were boss B!  Ray and Ed were a different breed than most man and their "U" brotherhood and bond made them even tougher to deal with.  I don't think that CJ has that in him to be honest.  Don't really see anyone on this present defense that brings the pain like our legends did.

Nothing wrong with trash talking brah!  It happens in competitive sports man!  lol

I loved it when Ray would tackle a HB and then tell him..."Get off the field!"  lol!  Most greats are trash talkers.  In the NBA, it has been said by many players that Michael Jordan was one of the biggest trash talkers ever.  I even remember him shooting a free throw with his eyes close and saying; "Mutumbo...this is for you!"  Of course he made it! lol  And even Reggie Miller said that 10% of the trash talking he did was for his opponent and the other 90% was for him.  Wow!  Love it! lol

Smh! lol!

Ray Lewis was one of the best trash talkers ever, and he wasn't even nasty with it, lol.   That NFL video on the best trash talkers that featured Ray is one of my favorites.

I remember in the Commencement Address that Peyton Manning gave at his alma mater he referenced Ray, saying that he was one of the best and in one game Ray sacked him and whispered in his ear "don't worry, I'll be back"!

It's also said that MJ ruined mugsy bougues career by getting in his head so bad. The article stated he used a lot of profanity followed by midget. If you don't know, mugsy was 5'3. Mugsy vouched for the story, saying he was never the same.

Of course I know about Mugsy, I'm an old schooler (older cat) in here.  I didn't know that MJ ruined his career though because of the trash talking.  Wow! lol

Without trash talking, we'd never have the gem, "You can't hurt this.  I'm a machine JERK!"

It's part of the game and should stay that way.  At least the little bit we have now before guys get flagged.  In a few years, teams will be hanging participation banners likes the Colts...

Couldnt find the original article i read, but here is the jist of it.  Old cat huh?  At least you got to watch the NBA when it was at its peak

"When Johnny Bach was coaching with the Hornets in 1995 they had a good team. Glen Rice, Mourning, Johnson. Series was tied at 2 and Hornets had a chance to win game 5 in Chicago.

On the biggest possession of the game, Mugsy had the ball with the Hornets down 1.

Jordan backed off of him and told him: “shoot it you f—ing midget.” Mugsy shot it, didn’t come close. A year later Mugsy actually told Johnny Bach that he believes that single play ruined his career. His shot never recovered."   Per http://www.viralhoops.com/michael-jordan-trash-talking-stories/

Yeah!  My era of basketball was having true big men in the middle that dominated the paint like Olajuwan, Ewing, Mourning, Robinson, Mutumbo and Shaq.  It was the era of the true rivalries like between the Lakers and Celtics, or the Bulls and Pistons and the Knicks and Pacers etc.

At least keep it football here. You need talent before talking. You do not back it up you become a joke. Ray and Ed are legends. Best at their positions. You do not draft the best LB and safety left in the hat when it comes around and think you are replacing hof's. You trade up top 5 and you still are not likely going to replace hof's. As a matter of fact you are likely to end up with busts aka Elam and Brown. If oz really wants to replace Ray and Ed he should have looked before they retired. So the safety and LB could actually watch Ray and Ed. Not wait til their retirement and grab whichever name is left in the hat.could Ray and Ed be replaced?? No way!! Ozzie is silly for even thinking it much less saying it. But you could find a perennial pro bowl safety and LB. Oz should of stayed course of bpa over replacing Ray and Ed. Or kept his eye open as Ray and Ed neared retirement. In 2012 oz overlooked countless pro bowl LBs and traded away Harrison Smith. Then waited til 2013 to reach for 2 replacements. Ravens need to reload and get some players who can back up trash talk

Back in the "old" days Defense could assert itself.  Nowadays they have to worry about every minor infraction a ref could choose.  With the inception of the concussion lawsuits by the NFL players union NFL management curtailed what we always appreciated.
