What Determines "Power" Ranking?

9 posts in this topic

I think I have an idea but I'm not sure so I wanted to hear you guys/gals take on this issue.  Here's why.  I just saw the NFL Network's segment called; "Week 9 Power Rankings".  And here are the 10 teams that they had listed....

1. Patriots                      6. Cardinals

2. Broncos                     7. Falcons

3. Bengals                     8. Vikings

4. Panthers                   9. Steelers

5. Packers                   10. Raiders

How in the world are the Steelers in this group?  Lol!  What determines "Power" ranking? Just wondering!

Usually it's Win/loss record and strength of schedule. Though the writer's bias and initial ranking plays a huge role as well.

Oh I see!  I was kind of thinking the record but forgot about the strength of schedule part.  Thanks Raine.

Completely arbitrary. Just the writers opinion on who is better. There's no mathematical equation involved. Unless said writer wants to make his own. I would put some stock into a guy like professional sports better Steve fezzik who uses his power rankings to determine value bets as opposed to a random guy on ESPN or NFL.com whos ranking is no more valid than one you or I could put together.

I would say the Steelers are there because they finally got their franchise QB back. They lost Bell but their D is about 5x better than anyone could have predicted. They should have beaten one of the top 3 teams last week but their offense faltered mightily. If their defense holds up and Ben gets back to form along with their offense, they are going to be a very hard team to beat.

I know to some this is heresy because there's so much blind hatred on this board.

The ESPN Power Rankings moved us slightly UP after we lost to ARI, DOWN a couple spots after we won against SD, and just moved us UP THREE SPOTS after our bye week. It's safe to say these things are less than meaningless.

To be fair like 7-27 are essentially the same.
