Could Ravens make a move for Calvin Johnson?

87 posts in this topic

the ravens are known for bringing in big name receivers? huh?

I assume he means Boldin, Mason, TJ, Sr, perhaps even Evans (at the time) and I bet there are a few I am missing. Its commonly known what we're better at signing older/aging FA receivers than we are at drafting them.

i gotcha, but we would have to wait until CJ is 33-34 years old until we pick him up to keep that trend going. because its always right after their prime.

Calvin is past his prime...

doubt it. he would still produce big numbers if given the right offense, and his price tag is still high. even this year he is a top 10 WR, look it up.

when we signed lee evans, TJ, SSS, boldin, etc they were past prime money. thats why we signed them.

I don't know what to say here. Calvin Johnson is past his prime? I don't know if he is or isn't, but people are fickle and said the same about Larry Fitz and he's killing it in Arizona at the moment. People said the same about Steve Smith Sr.

Just because a guy isn't lighting the scoreboard up doesn't mean he's washed up and done.

That said, I don't see how we can afford him.

He could be a cut candidate in 2017 unless the Lions want to trade him this coming up offseason and he agrees to a restructure. Word on the street was he could've been had for a 2nd round pick today. I would probably die from excitement if we could pair him up with Flacco.

He's constantly nicked up. As he's now 30, and has taken a lot of abuse (reminiscent of Todd Heap) it's reasonable to expect that if he isn't already in decline, he soon will be. And that he'll miss more games in the future as those injuries start to add up  and his body starts to break down.

By contrast, neither Fitz nor SSS had that sort of injury history, so they're not a proper comparison.

Receivers like Miles Austin or Roddy White would be better examples.

even if he is declining he will still be better than a lot of WRs out there.  That being said, he isnt worth the money for a team like us.  Not that this is even in the realm of possibility.

Not if injuries keep him off the field constantly.

Even if he still has the talent it hardly matters if he hardly plays.

Lol I was thinking, well I hope the OP has some unique trade scenarios filled with detail salary cap examples. Otherwise what's the point.

If we going to dream, can we also trade for a pass rusher, free safety, cover corner and a left tackle while having zero cap space and no ramifications.

When I made the topic I didnt even look up the Salary cap figures. i mean I would bet during the off season this same scenario comes back up when they restructure Flacco's contract and get rid of some big names. I can see Webb and/or Pitta either renegotiating or being sent off/cut.

The problem with that is... cutting Webb or Pitta doesn't create much cap space, and in pretty much any possible scenario, we still won't have the cap space to afford Calvin. The guy's due nearly $16M next season.

Well they have to come up with some more offensive weapons for Joe...so who is up next? Perriman? I don't think he will turn out to be as good as everyone is hoping...FA seems to be the best place where Ravens find talent at the WR position, so who else is out there?

This is why fans aren't GMs. No we shouldn't and no we don't have the cap to get him anyway. We sure as hell shouldn't trade a 2nd a wr on the decline as well.

CJ is just 30 and in the midst of a bad Lions season is still on pace for 1300 yards receiving. That's decline?

CJ's cap hit for the team that receives his contract if traded:

2016: $16 mil

2017: $16.5 mil

2018: $17 mil

2019: $18.25 mil

That contract is nearly untradable. CJ is still very good when healthy, but at this point in his career (age 30+), he cannot be making that kind of money. Only a team with tons of cap space could afford him.

Now if he's cut by Det then all bets are off, since you know Ozzie loves FAs who don't count against the comp. picks formula. We will actually have some cap space to play with down the line after cutting a few people and restructuring or extending Flacco. It's a shame we didn't cut Webb and Pitta before June 1 of this season--we could have just suffered all of that dead money in 1 season (one in which we were bad anyway) but hindsight is 20/20.

Is Calvin getting better, worse or staying the same?  Add in, he hasn't stayed healthy the past 2 seasons.

No and they shouldn't.

Dunno what I'm more surprised about, this getting to -3 or this thread hitting three pages. Should have been locked after this reply.

Tried to help it out but yeah, both things not really good.

I have heard some pretty crazy claims from people saying they have inside info. I heard one person say that their "sources" had us trading for Calvin Johnson last year.

This thread is my fault guys

I don't see anyone trading for him. Might as well wait it out because I don't see the lions wanting to use a big portion of their cap on a vet when this is a team that will need to rebuild.
