Beast and one of the best at his position for a decade and a half. If you're done, I get it and we all love you man! Way to be the one piece of excitement this year!

The rehab process to come back from an Achilles is as tough as it gets, you have to fully commit to coming back like Suggs did a few years ago. At his age that commitment to come back would be a tough road to take ...

I think TOUGH is Steves middle name.....

( looking on the bright side )

Fact of the matter is, he is gonna have to get it repaired ANYWAY.  He is gonna have to rehab it ANYWAY.

This is a bittersweet evening indeed. A lot of mixed emotions over here.

I think this may have happened for a reason, and somehow I also don't think he will want to go out like that. This may have been the one thing that could get him to give us one more year,.as much as I hate to say it ...this could be a blessing in disguise. I absolutely hate for it to happen this way though, And regardless of what he decides he will go out with an enormous amount of respect and dignity. I pray this wasn't the last time he sees the feild...and I hope he gets to go out on his terms.

I actually was thinking the same thing!

While I hate that this happened to SSS, the "blessing in disquise" to me is that NOW these receivers, tight ends have no choice, no reason or no execuses for not getting on the same page as Joe and elevating the level of their game play going forward.  They ALL have their opportunities to become household names now.  Who will rise to the challenge within the next 8 games?

Le sigh.... Poor SSR. He deserved a ring.

on the off chance he does come back. We need to prime the team. Even without him we are a defense away from being a playoff team again

I agree ... one of the toughest dudes to ever step on the field. However there is a huge difference between rehabbing an achilles for normal life, and rehabbing it to step foot on an NFL field at the age of 37 ... especially as a WR.

Is it possible that SSS goes into the HOF as a Raven. He was a Panther for all those years and they love him in Carolina but the team disrespected him when he was certainly still playing at a high level. He must know by now we love him in Baltimore and our organization respected him. I would love to see SSS in the HOF as a Raven.

Yeah I have a hunch ( based on absolutely nothing of course ) Steve is gonna sit down with his family and talk this through.

I am pretty sure he was crying there on the field, am sure due to both pain and heart break.   I know he wants to end his career to be with his family, which I commend him for.  Its the greatest reason to retire.

But man o man.  Like this ?

Ultimately I will always say "Family first", but waiting just one more year isnt necessarily putting family second.

Yeah, it's completely up to him what he does. On a personal note I admire his drive and especially his never-say-die attitude and would LOVE to see him come back for one more season if he thinks he's got it in him, but an Achilles injury is no joke and if he feels the time is right to hang it up and be with his family no-one can blame him for that either (not to say anyone here would be blaming him).

It just sucks to see his season and possibly his career end this way, after he showed so much heart despite the poor play around him. He deserved a ring, so I'm gutted for him atm. Sports can be a cruel realm sometimes.

I've wondered what team Steve would go under in the HoF. There are valid arguments both ways. He claims he was born a Raven, but Carolina is where he played his entire career and he'll always be identified with that team. The fans would certainly be upset and rightly so.

Steve Smith Sr wouldn't be disrespecting the team as much as he would the fans. I don't think he'd do that as much as he loves us.

If Ed Reed's stint with the Texans had been to have two fantastic seasons, I'd be pretty upset if he were inducted as a Texan. Even if he'd won DPoY both years.

I think inducting him as a Panther would be the right thing to do, even after they cut him like that. But the fact that he pulled together two fantastic seasons for us at his age is a damn fine notch for his legacy. I can't recall many players doing that well on a new team at the tail end of their careers.

I feel like Derrick Mason is being overlooked in some of these talks but I get it Steve Smith has been everything for this team. He's one of the greatest WRs of all time and gave us everything he had and MORE. The dudes a warrior nothing more to say but heal up SSS and GL with wherever you go from here. <3

Mason is so underrated.   He did so much for us.   I hope he can join the ring of honors.   Man was a beast.

When Steve came in, he was an over-the-hill, slow possession receiver who would be #2 to Torrey. What a turnaround since then. Here's hoping he's got one more season left.

We will remember SSS always for the dynamic force he brought to our team. He embodied what play like a Raven truly means. The Universe is in tune by granting him Top Ten status.Together we in RavenNation wish him the best in all his future endeavors.

He should have always been a Raven.

that is all I can think about...he was born to be a Raven. He would have looked so natural playing next to Ray, Ed, JO and Heap... what could have been

With this injury and all the time to rehab and think... I wouldn't be suprised if he came back in more of a beast mode. Also, just means it's 8 games of pounding he doesn't take this year.

I'll never forget the play against the lions when he had that should injury... Damnit I wish I wasn't on my phone so I could post it.

I doubt this'll be the last time he suits up. He isn't the kind of player to end his career like this. Even if he comes back next year and is at 50% he is good enough to be a #3. His season is over but I don't think his career is over just yet.

^^^^^ could totally see him playing one more year. coming back in halfway through next season and working him back into the offense as a #2 or 3 guy. it'll add another playmaker and do nothing but help the offense, which we all expect to be powerful this time next year if the organization plays their cards right.

work the offseason like he wont be around and lock up some new receivers for joe, but keep SSS on the roster and pray he comes back.
