Want him?   Heck yeah!   But it will never happen. Ex players that go into coaching are the ones that didn't make much $ when they were playing.  There may be an exception, but I can't think of one.

Ray was a Coach on the Field and studied the game like few others. He worked on his fitness incessantly. His last year, he lost over 20 pounds riding his bicycle and leaning out because the NFL had fewer bruising fullbacks.  His personality is immense. He dwarfs mere men and that greatness infuriates some.  But that is the case with natural leaders, they are larger than life.

Ray would be a godsend to this team in a coaching capacity. Because he would instantly bring what we lack and that is pure inspiring leadership.  If fans think Harbaugh is bringing that 1-6 should tell you something.

There's a talent deficiency on this team, so even Ray can't work miracles. But he would be a great start.

There are few players who can motivate defense players better than #52

Good assessment.  However, 17 years pro and 17 years removed from college can turn that thought.

Ray would probably be an amazing DC if he wanted to be. He has a brilliant mind for the game and studies tons of tape on opponents. As a DC I think he'd get the most out of every player and put them in good position to make plays.

you are probably right but DC on a NFL is a huge step after just retiring.

im just thinking he might want to have some experience first just simply coaching and learning the ropes from someone with experience instead of going all in right away.

also i think you get more time to figure stuff out in college then in the NFL.

also his son plays there and they need coaches lol.

would be awesome if he and reed get experience there before coming here.

would love them around from the start aswell though.

the thing is we dont know if he can call plays.

what made lewis great was that he could take the DC play call and make adjustments on the field based on what he saw and based on how much he studied.

he could shift the alingment of the defense  or instinctively free lance and make the play.

its not something you can teach though.

either players have it or they dont.

what is going to be a huge challenge for him is learning to explain stuff even if its natural to him.

he has to realise not everyone has the same football IQ as him and thus not take things as a given.

a lot of brilliant players often struggle with this cause what is normal to them , is next level stuff for others.

like urshel can talk about his studies and such but its really just a small fraction of people that can talk to him with out feeling lost lol

I don't want Ray as a coach for the simple reason that most superstar athletes never make good coaches in any sport .

We may need some stats.   mmmmm   Phil Jackson....Don Shula.......Joe Torre   Joe Girardi  .Buck Showalter........Name your Hockey team  and insert name.   Perhaps if Ray is unsuccessful then his player reputation would be tarnished..

Yes, let's make a man with zero coaching experience the Defensive coordinator of a professional football team. Good plan.

I remember once Tony Dungy was asked if Peyton Manning would be a good coach and he simply said, "No." The reason is Peyton was too cerebral and would expect too much from his players to be at his level.

Not every great player will make a great coordinator or coach. I'd rather see him do it in college first.

That's a very good point, but Ray and Peyton are different people.

But it still doesn't change that I'd want him to be a coach at a lower level first

no, I wouldn't want Ray Lewis as DC.  Just because he was a great player, doesn't mean he would be a good or even an average DC.  He has no experience even as an assistant.

So then it's impossible to find one then... Got it

Name another . Yogi was a great player but not every Hall of Famer was a superstar .

I'm going with No.  I don't think Ray has what it takes to plan and scheme an entire defense.  Ed Reed either.  If they had any inclimnation to do so they would've been hired as a DC by now.

HOWEVER, if you want Ray as a Linebackers coach and Reed as a secondary coach then maybe that would work out.  Perhaps in a few seasons one could emerge as a DC.

Just because the man talks a good game in the locker room before games doesn't make him a coach.  Motivational speaker, yes, coach....not so much...unless its linerbackers coach.
