Neither Lewis or Brooks are playing great so far this season.  The Ravens  aren't new to allowing their back up safeties see time on the field on defense  even when they had Ed Reed or any other solid safety like  Pollard or Landry.

 

If Matt Elam comes to camp focused and plays alot better in training camp all through out preseason then best believe The Ravens coaches  are going try to get their first round pick as much playing time on defense as possible. I can't predict the future Matt Elam may become the free safety The Ravens been looking for after losing Ed Reed or atleast  become a solid back safety they can use in certain situations.

 

I'd love to see Matt Elam turn it around...but I gotta tell you, the Free Safety wish is beyond the realm of comprehension.  Some guys have ball skills and some do not....They are not coachable.

The argument in defense of Elam's poor Free Safety play in 2013 was that he was actually a Strong Safety and a "fish out of water" at the Free Safety slot and that he'd been placed there in 2013 out of "necessity".  If Sami is quoting accurately, it tends to corroborate that Elam was actually tabbed for the Free Safety slot, which appears fairly evident anyway.

 

One can't watch Elam's film or drills without realizing that he has no ball skills whatsoever. 

 

It's all likely moot anyway, but it would be funny if it wasn't so tragic.

Ed reed started as a Strong Safety....

 

huff was supposed to be the FS while idhedigbo would be the SS and elam would sit behind them and learn.

he would take over from idhedigbo who was on a 1 year deal anyways.

its just that huff was horrible.

huff signed a 3 year deal btw.

 

so it should be pretty clear what they envisioned not to mentioned they drafted a FS the next year with brooks.

 

Elam played SS in college and was pretty darn good doing it btw.

 

expectations where that he would be able to make an impact like ed did when drafted...
