Matt Elam Suspended 1 game

70 posts in this topic

Even if he was healthy a suspension still wouldn't impact anything. Who would notice hia absence?

And in this secondary that is saying something.

I don't think you're out of line, he clearly just doesn't get it. Elam loves the NFL lifestyle but not the work and maturity/self control it takes to perform at a high level. How many times since he got drafted has he sat down to watch film that isn't either in a meeting with the defense or for the next week's opponent? Has he ever studied a guy like an Ed Reed, Rodney Harrison, Charles Woodson? Watching the angles they take for tackles, the spacing they use in their zones, how they play TE's in man coverage, how they come up in run support, how they use the sideline to their benefit in coverage, how they react post-snap in different situations, ect.

I would 100% guarantee he hasn't done anything like that. Playing safety in the NFL is more than just lifting weights and going through the motions in practice, if Elam hasn't learned that by now then he never will.

They don't want us to be harsh because friends, family, and sometimes players come here. I think Elam is an exception. This guy does dumb thing after dumb thing.

I tolerated his so called performance on the field, but he's not worth a dumb off the field suspension. Furthermore, I do agree with you that he doesn't put in the work. I think he's lazy and his play reflects that in every way. It's like he expects to win off athleticism alone, and he's not even that athletic.

I even question whether he's played football while high. That may certainly explain his complete failure as a player. It would help me explain him starring at a (I think?) Browns WR last year thinking, I suppose, his eyes could make a tackle.

That play right there has encapsulated his career.

Teams would probably be sad he wasn't on the field.

One of those "addition by subtraction" situations.

Actually they probably wouldn't even notice that because there are other players to pick on, like for instance... every single Ravens db.

Nah they notice. Everyone wants to throw at the guy who eye tackles.

I feel bad for him because he's lost 2 siblings to street violence and lost his father to cancer, the guy has been through A LOT at a young age and has had to bear way more grief and pressure on his shoulders than any kid at his age should have to deal with. It's really common for kids that go through that sort of trauma in their life to have substance abuse issues and turn to drugs/alcohol/women to escape their reality and unfortunately I think that's a big part of the problem with Matt.

To me he just never evolved from the person/player he was in college, he had success in college not putting in any work outside of practice and the weight room and he grew accustomed to that lifestyle. When he got to the NFL his football IQ got exposed, his work ethic subsequently got exposed, and he was trapped in his old ways of living that he was used to succeeding in spite of. Matt's story is not so uncommon in the NFL but it's not very often we see it with a 1st round pick.

I feel sorry for him too but if he can't see the good opportunity he's had here he needs to go. It's a business and he's not maturing on a personal or professional level(shouting out his weed-man). He just shouldn't be in the NFL.

When did this happen???

Last year before the season if I remember correctly. He tried using slang to get around it but a ton of people called him out on it and he deleted the tweet.

Elam has not been good even when healthy. Frankly I am done with him but if I were GM I'd be nice and give the guy a chance to earn a roster spot in camp next year. We would save about 1.3 mil on the cap by cutting him though so it will be harder for him to earn a spot than the average player.

And I could be great target if single covered by Elam.

I would eat greedy all day!

taking the piss out of his easy greedy nonsense..

i cried with laughter and pain when ozzie was on the phone and implied ''you are the man to replace ed reed, are you ready?''

thats when i knew..you know what, these guys don't know as much as we think they do.

I really despise stupid people. How they function in life amazes me. This moron was gifted physical attributes, but nothing upstairs.

Since he is in recovery I would be curious as to what the substance in question was.

This one game suspension is gonna kill us ! This guy is a mix of Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu , with

great instincts and sure tacking ability .

Damn I wish we didn't draft this guy. I see him getting waived if we can't find a suitable trade partner. Coming back from one of the more grusome injuries and on the cusp of nothing but mediocre play since being drafted...and now he gets suspended to top it all off.

Well played Elam

I'm actually interested in seeing how well Elam plays next season or how he preforms in training camp. He supposely look like a changed player before his injury in camp . Sometimes people have  to face serious embarrassment  and down fall inorder to become more humble and focused.

C'mon you know exactly what I meant by that, guys getting glowing reviews in shells and shorts who do nothing in the real games. The media saying Elam was a "changed" player means nothing to me based on their assessments of other camp darlings.

Butler and Melvin haven't been on the team longer than Elam. I just think it speaks more volumes when it mention that Elam looked like a change player mentally and etc. It wasn't just The Ravens coaching saying this but I think NFL Analysts  Albert Beer  even mention how Elam looked like a different player in camp.

Does this ultimately means that Elam was finally going to  play to the level the team been hoping for ? No not really but I don't take what said as grain of salt either.

What an idiot. Another one of Ozzies great picks of the 2010's.

Yep you hit the nail my friend. And like I said this will be a building process. Name one player under 30 you can build an offense or defense around?? Other than Joe cool. But what good is it if they do not surround him with weapons!! SS was a great pick up thankfully. But at 35 it could have went sideways. Ozzie for all his praise has zero intuition for young players that are ready for a breakout. I pleaded to sign Brandon Lafell or Emmanuel Sanders as they had the tools to breakout at a cheap salary. Lafell is making g $3mil. And could have easily produced 1400 yards 10+ TDs!! If not for Brady already having 5 years of chemistry with Gronk\Edelman. Emmanuel I said would be an upgrade over Decker but everybody ridiculed that idea to. Even Britt would be a good signing. The guys I like this year to breakout this year on the cheap are Nick Perry Zach Brown and or Sean Spence. Both 3 down LBs who have decent physicality. Nick Perry can run the arc and plays with good power. I do like our DLine of Williams Jernigan and Davis to play an effective triad by next year and keep the LBs clean. Perry and Brown or Spence can be signed cheap and give the ravens 3 young defenders at LB that play at 4.6 speed and better then find a buiding block type Rush olb opposite of Perry and that is a young front 7 to toast to!! I personally prefer Zach Brown as he is 6'3 245 4.5 speed and covers well. It could allow the ravens to put draft picks like Elam,Arthur and Upshaw in the rearview. Getting the ravens back to championship contention begins with better drafting and signings. Although far from a Dean pees fan, firing coaches for not making apple pie with sour apples is not the first solution! Ozzie has made terrible signings like Monroe Pitta Jimmy, failed to identify breakout players in free agency and mostly bad draft picks void of pro bowl talent and not much to get excited about. Ozzie is long overdue for some homeruns in the draft and free agency bargains!! He deserves a shot this offseason but another bad draft and free agency and he should be on the hotseat.

How does a guy like Elam make it to the field? He won't beat out Will Hill for the SS spot, I doubt he would be out Lewis (as bad as he's been) or Brooks for the FS spot. Unless he suddenly learns how to play STs, I don't really see a place for him on the team, at least as a starter.

Neither Lewis or Brooks are playing great so far this season.  The Ravens  aren't new to allowing their back up safeties see time on the field on defense  even when they had Ed Reed or any other solid safety like  Pollard or Landry.

If Matt Elam comes to camp focused and plays alot better in training camp all through out preseason then best believe The Ravens coaches  are going try to get their first round pick as much playing time on defense as possible. I can't predict the future Matt Elam may become the free safety The Ravens been looking for after losing Ed Reed or atleast  become a solid back safety they can use in certain situations.

What an idiot. Sorry, mods, but dumb stuff like this deserves these labels. Matt Elam has to be a moron to get suspended when he's already on IR for a season ending injury and wasn't even that good to begin with here.

This guy needs to go.

Look at the bright side he saved us a game check in cap space

I'm still mad we didn't trade up when Hopkins,Ogletree and Patterson all fell to the late 20's.Even though Patterson is looking like a bust,he still would've been a better pick than Elam and I think he developed into a better player if he had Joe as a QB.
