[News] Dean Pees: Jimmy Smith Playing Too Tentative

78 posts in this topic

Another reason...Jimmy could be having a down year... NO PASS RUSH!

If I remember, game 1 fully healthy Ravens D..Suggs,Dumervil Rush.... Jimmy Smith picked off Peyton.

So even great corners cant cover without Pressure... More then a second or 2 in new age NFL.

I have seen Sherman and boys get exposed, Flacco and Smith sr were tearing up Pat Peterson, etc etc...

It all goes back to PASS RUSH!!! If you get None or limited rush.. Your corners no matter how good get beat eventually.

Thats why 2 Glaring holes Ravens Organization must address through draft or free agency etc this offseason...

Get 2 Stud Pass Rushers, since Dumervil getting older and Suggs coming back from injury. Then atleast a couple stud WRs..

Then and only then..maybe a Free Safety, and a Speed Backer, second ILBr to replace Daryl Smith.. And Art Brown Bust pick

I don't know that it is smart for an embattled Pees to be calling out one of the top paid players on the team while mired in a 3 game losing streak during a 1 - 6 season. To paraphrase Mike Shanahan, it is Jimmy Smith's job to be the best player he can be, and it is your job, Mr. Pees, to see to it. So thus far neither of you is doing his job and one is calling the other out... stay tuned fellas, this is about to get interesting.

OH, Jimmy's "...playing too tentative",... that's what it is? That's what the Secondary's problem is?

So, Webb's cushion on 3rd Downs and the overall lack of teamwork in coverage 20 yards beyond the LOS are systemic problems indicating that the players do not know how to play together as a unit!   :o

What part of bending but not breaking sounds aggressive ?

Our whole defense is not aggressive enough...!

That's why sacks are down, turnovers are down, no QB's are afraid of our backfield and our wins are down.

Sorry Dean this is bigger than #22 !

Says the guy who calls the softest D in the NFL. I am not Jimmy fanboy, I think he is a very inconsistent. But wasn't he playing really well last year, because they actually let him play press coverage a lot?

This is kind of hilarious. How about you let the DBs challenge the receivers more often instead of playing a prevent defense? I just can't see how Pees or Trestman will be back next year.

They just put Jimmy Smith on IR, for getting thrown under the bus.

I don't know why you got negged so many times.. I got a good laugh when I read your comment.

Dean Pees you are the reason buddy. You not letting players to play the receiver you have to let them play not playing zone defense crap all the time. John Harbaugh should've fired him to save our season but it's too late now. Dean Pees needs to go and get the heck out of Baltimore and our defense. We need a skill aggressive d-coordinator.

Count me in on this, we do play a soft, PREVENT-Style defense right out of the gate and usually until the 4th quarter, when we cannot give up any yards. And, usually as soon as we play up on the WR's, then they go to the deep ball, like to Torrey and like in Oakland and Cincy, as well.

I like Dean Pees enough and want him to succeed, but we might be too far past it now. It's not always our personnel's fault. Sooner or later, they're going to have an article on here, about Dean Pees Soft, Cover (no one) defense.

Ever since getting toasted by Amari Cooper I don't think he has gotten anywhere near the line of scrimmage....he just focuses on making the tackle after the WR catches the ball.

in my eyes this is the first sign of strife in the locker room, only harbs calls guys out and even then he's careful about what he says. good bye pees!!!

Poor coaching and poor preparation plus a forgotten skill, tackling, have all played a part in this 1-6 season thus far.

If he is injured sit'em. Give someone else a chance to develop. Why is this so difficult? The guy has been nothing but a booty call for QBs. If you want to go deep call Jimmy.

Trestman will be back because I think the FO understands supplying our new OC with the worst receiver corps in the league isn't much of an assessment of what he can fully do with the offense, not to mention there's no way in hell Ozzie lets the team go through 5 OC's in 5years, 4 in 4 years is crazy, 5 is insane. Pees on the other hand........

I remember when Ed Reed called Flacco out. Flacco was a lot better after that. Maybe Jimmy Smith will respond the same way.

Jimmy blew a the very first tackle of the game...I agree Dean is not calling a good game, but the players need to Tackle and make plays.

how many different players have we had on defense in the last 3 years? the one constant is Pees. are all these players that bad, or are they poorly coached?

So Dean, you are telling us Jimmy is just freelancing by playing so far off the line? You are not telling them to play off the line? If he is freelancing like that why don't you just tell him to play on the line? If he is not freelancing, why are you calling him out for doing what he is told?

I think you are trying to have it both ways.

Smith legs look gone, like no power in his hips to sprint on a dime. I was thinking maybe he just met a new hot girlfriend and was having too much fun now he's running slow. Every time I watch him against a fast receiver I'm looking like what's wrong with his upper legs, they moving slow.

Jimmy Smith needs to step up, and i believe he will. I also like will hill. but other than them two, the rest of the secondary is garbage. will davis was looking good before he got hurt. Webb and Wright stay getting burned and Lewis has been a major disappointment. I'm not ready to give up on this season but hopefully we get a corner or free safety first round next draft.

Pees indicated that Smith could press more at the line of scrimmage. At 6-foot-2, 206 pounds, that’s always been Smith’s strength, but he could be backing off more if he’s even subconsciously thinking he’s going to get beat or can’t stay in a receiver’s pocket.

^ Hilarious to me!  How can he "press" when you keep calling for the DB's to play nearly 10-15 yrds off the receivers Pees?  C'mon man!  Smh!
