[News] Ravens Defense In Desperate Need Of Turnovers

Yep, players like Daryl Smith, Courtney Upshaw, Jimmy Smith, and Will Hill have not capitalized on oppurtunities. Not to blame them because sometimes the ball just doesn't bounce your way. But I do remember each of them dropping a potential INT

A secondary that is clinging on for dear life can't be expected to be a ball hawks. When you play scared  in off coverage, it is hard to get picks.

As for the run D, it's been pretty good, but we just don't seem to gang tackle. Our D always used to look like a pack of hyenas on a kill. Now, one guy, maybe two are around the ball. If you have multiple guys around the ball, then one guy can make an attempt to punch out the ball and someone else who is around the ball has a chance to get it.

Ray always talked about getting the defense to "hunt". This defense doesn't hunt. It would be nice to see that mentality again, but it just isn't there.

Corners can't pick nothing if they can't trust their safeties, Harbaugh yelling at Wright for looking in the back field but you're suppose to be able to look and see when the ball is coming knowing if the receiver takes off the safety will pick him up deep. Except for all out blitzes

need to be aggressive and to have all 11 guys on the same page. know how to read offenses and to read players tendencies. this defense does not attack as they sit back and give 10-12 yard cushions to the receivers and wait till the rb had gained 3-5 yards instead of attacking the gap. need a def coord and defensive secondary coaches that are better. i still like ted monachino to be promoted to dc or go after jim schwartz. pagano has said indy will be his last coaching job so he is not an option.

It seems to me that 50% of defense is execution and 50% is perception. When you had guys like Ed Reed who had a knack and penchant for abandoning his zone assignments and jumping routes because he knew how QBs are trained to work through their progressions and read defenses, you get more turnovers. The result? No one even bothered to throw in the half of the field Reed was lined up in for a span of seasons.

Fast forward to today. When you have one of the league's leading sack-duos, one of whom was the NFLs Defensive MVP in recent memory, QBs 'perceive' that they only have about 2.5 to 3 seconds to get the ball out. When one of those monsters is down? Suddenly you have a little more confidence and pep in your step to sit back there and dissect the coverage.

We've seen this defense play well in fits and starts, but do they have the field presence and football IQ in enough guys to play the chess game for 60 minutes? That seems to be the problem. What Ray Lewis termed 'chemistry.'

There are layers of challenges when building a defense.

1. staffing each level of defense with competitive talent

2. 'chemistry' or 'being on the same page.' Have the guys been together long enough to where they can just let instinct that's been polished by their practice reps take over?

3. making plays

Right now we seem to be stuck on step 0.2. Can't even field enough talented guys for each level.

Wasn't that theme of Training Camp? We can see that went well? Why do we have so many more injuries than the rest of the league when we are Supposed to be so well conditioned? Whatever their doing they need to stop and re-evaluate what their doing or get better qualified people in those positions.

Defense is in desperate need of.....well, pretty much everything defense wise! They are pretty good up front most times stopping the run, but that's where it ends. OK, sure turnovers would help. GO RAVENS!

Going to be hard for the secondary to get a jump on the route or fight with a receiver for a contested ball for interceptions when they are habitually 10 yards away from where the ball is being thrown.

The Ravens defense looks reactive and not authoritative. If your band stinks at least play loud. It is far past the time for the Ravens defense to make some noise! Hit somebody, cause a fumble, make an interception, do at least one good thing on defense - that is all that is needed for Joe and company to rally on offense. No delayed blitzes; go full out attack. Make something happen on defense or sit down.

We can't get any interceptions because the opposing WRs are catching everything. Our corners can't even catch the WRs they are covering- how they heck are they supposed to get any interceptions. If we knew not getting turnovers/ interceptions were an issue last year, then how come Oz/ FO failed to address that this year? Also, Ngata used to tip a lot of balls on defense which led to a turnover or too- the only thing I see our defense tip is tip their hands to WRs by playing ten yards off them every game.

Looks like our DB's are satisfied to just let receivers catch the ball and then hope that they can make a tackle......turnovers are not even part of their thought process.

Ed Reed is saying he'd entertain a coaching position at Miami (University); maybe we could convince him to a DB/safety coach here.

This right here needs to be done. The only thing that made people roll their eyes whenever it was suggested that Ray or Eddie be brought in as coaches was "why would someone who wasnt obsessed with football to a degree that theyd be willing to put in a year round committment to 14 hour days of banal film review, game planning and coaching agree to this?

But it's obvious the Eddie does want to be a coach. Let's make it happen man.

A wise man once told me "I would rather have a team of sheep led by a lion than a team of lions lead by a sheep" We have a team of lions now we need a lion to lead

The defense is slow and lethargic and shows no team "gang-hussle" or "swarming" to the football. It lacks play makers imo and it is void of "the" or "a" superstar at every level (DT, LB, CB, S). Finally imo, on the back end there are no "true" ballhawks!

I use to watch this defense with excitement and anticipation and "intuitively" knew when the turnover was about to manifest in a game either by way of fumble or pick. NOT NOW!

Turnovers?? I'll be happy with just a couple three and outs for our defense... and maybe holding an opponent under 25 points..

I remember getting more excited when our defense got a chance to play than the offense. Never knew when Ed Reed would get another interception. I hope we get another corner who thinks like a wide receiver.

Brandon Williams, Timmy Jernigan, Carl Davis, Mosley, Jimmy Smith.

Purge the rest of the chrap on the D including the bozo who sits cozily in his booth to call plays instead of being on the ground with his warriors.

ed reed would be a huge upgrade over the secondary bozos (coaches) we have now. these 2 guys are clueless.

A more aggressive defense! Man id rather give up a big play know that we were very aggressive on Defense, then to give up a big play because we only rushed 4 players and sat in Zone coverage.

Jalen Ramsey or Joey Bosa with the first pick. We need a pass-rusher and a ballhawk, we won't be able to get both so pick one, which one do we need more.

From what I've gathered about our team, we need WR's and Defensive Secondary help. I mean, with our luck at drafting or keeping Receivers, we'd have to draft about 6 of them to get 1 that works out! So, that being said, I'd pick 6 WR's and a couple of Defensive Backs. How's that, luck!

Create more turnovers huh? Yeah turnover to a new DC. I didn't think we were going to play this bad at the beginning of the season. Then Suggs gets hurt and every heart on the team left the building. This is not playing like a Raven. The Chargers will put up yards on us. Kennan Allen, Antonio Gates, Melvin Gordon who hasn't really played well will also be in the mix for some good eating. Last, but not least they are going to let Jacoby Jones play and he will have at least 100 yards and a touchdown. This is going to be a very ugly game. nonetheless, I will be watching to see what happens. Boy do I hope I'm wrong.

Why in the hell are we talking about turnovers when this defense is holding on for dear life in every game, just trying not to get blown out?! Absurd!
