[News] Late For Work 10/29: Here's Why Breshad Perriman Isn't On Injured Reserve

138 posts in this topic

I am in a daze with our roster moves all season. I can't seem to figure out the reasoning behind a lot of these moves.

Maybe thats why they pay Ozzie and not you - or me or any other Ravens-fan, for that matter ;) The fact that we, laymen, don't see the reason behind certain moves doesn't mean they have no rhyme or reason - we just don't know enough to see it.

Two points 1.) What does four games that Perriman plays tell you. That he can run fast? We know that. Can he catch a ball? I think after OTA's and mini-camp we should know that. What it won't tell you is how durable will he be in the coming years. If he plays 4 games and kicks butt, does it mean we don't draft or pick up a receiver in free agency? If not, we are fools thinking that magically and mysteriously, the injury that was not an injury that kept him out all season, won't keep him out all of next season. 4 games wont show you he is durable so why bother. Find it all out next year when you have a full season to evaluate. 2.) Not many people know how many people the scouting department has lost since Harbaugh took over. I was listening to Phil Savage talk and he went through a litany of very good people involved in the early Ravens drafts (himself and Daniel Jeremiah to name two) that are now part of another organization. He also pointed out that when he was there Marchibroda and Billick had no say in personnel. Harbaugh is heavily embroiled in every new player. Harbaugh came on in 2008 and got involved in personnel. From 2009 til present we have had one pro-bowler when prior to the coach being involved in personnel, we averaged a pro bowler every two years and never went 3 in a row without one. With the loss of scouts and the inclusion of Harbaugh in personnel decision we clearly have an issue with talent evaluation. From drafting (where we have failed) to players on the team, our talent evaluation has been atrocious lately.

The 4 games will give you a sample of what he looks like when he's reasonably healthy. Wouldn't you rather know that when you're completely out of it over trying to figure that out the first half of next season when you're actually competing?

You're right, its impossible to know durability, but then again, you probably won't know that next season either... or the season after that... of the season after that.

Remember, Webb had two basically fully healthy seasons right after his injury in 2009. At the time, we could classify him as "durable".

Not much attention has been paid to the attrition in coaching staff over the past several years. Perhaps Ozzie needs to assist Harbs in scouting for better offensive and defensive coordinators... bright ones who might hang around more than a year or two. No OC should be brought on board without a 3- year contract...sure they could get the next team to buy us out, but then we would have more to offer new talent.

You shouldn't think so low of yourself. What they do doesn't take a degree in rocket science. Just saying

OK, but then you admit you were wrong about having an open roster spot anyway, right? ;)

I don't see a fascination with Butler - it just seemed weird that he was apparently promoted just to be inactive, thats all. and of course we all realize this may be an absolutely logical and right decision, because we may not know all the reasons and circumstances that make it so. It just SEEMS weird.

Sure, only because I thought McGee got released first.

I don't expect anything from people called up from the PS, so it doesn't matter to me. Most of the time they move up and down all year long based on injuries.

BTW... am I the only one to think Flacco is sending out barely-disguised signals that he's not exactly pleased with Trestman - or his system?

(Not as if it meant much - in his first year as an OC, Todd Haley was the constant target of criticism, even from his own players, including Roethlisberger - and now he has one of the most prolific offense... it just took a season or two.)

Bio do you ever come up with your own comments for people to judge lol or do you just quote other people's comments Lol.

I actually find it pretty funny, whenever I see a quote from one of my comments and I see the title "BioLarzen" I always go "Uh Oh im in trouble" Lol

Magee was released first, of course - you can't do it the other way. But he was cut specifically to make room for Butler.

“Though there might be wide consensus that the team's sharp downturn stems from a decided lack of playmakers, the Ravens also need to figure out if that's the only reason why the offensive attack has failed to develop a consistent rhythm during new Offensive Coordinator Marc Trestman's first season.”

Lack of playmakers, that is the understatement of the century, LOL!  I still think we have a lot of potential on the roster at TE and I still think Forsett is very serviceable at RB, but yes we need some ballers on the team and so far we have whiffed in the last few drafts trying to find one.

I also think our biggest issue on the offensive side is that we have had no consistency with the OCs, we are on the 4th in the last 5 or so years.  We need to stop going after a recently fired HC’s and either promote from within or find a true OC that is willing to be one for more than one or two seasons.  The trouble with hiring former HC's is that if they do well (which has been the case, except this season) they are looking to jump back into a HC position.  Let's hope the FO can fix this issue and evaluate the deeper ends of our roster and come up with a plan (either drafting or free agency) to get this team back where it belongs, winning games & making the playoffs!  Go Ravens!

Yea and those people who are paid millions have us 1-6 right now. Just because there getting paid millions to do a job doesn't mean that there are people out here that cannot do the same thing just because there not getting paid millions for it.

You shouldn't think so low of yourself. What they do doesn't take a degree in rocket science. Just saying

And for your information, they don't get paid millions. We actually have 1st year scouts right now. So where did you get the information that "they have done it successfully for a long time".

Get your facts straight then come back and talk to me

LOL, nice try.

1. They get paid millions because they have proven to their employer that they are worth millions. I don't care what the low-level scout makes, because the team that gets final say over personnel decisions are the likes of DeCosta, Ozzie and Harbaugh, who yes, get paid millions. They take recommendations from people making a whole lot less, but that doesn't mean they just take their word for it and draft whoever they say. Employers generally don't just hand out 7 figure paychecks to guys who don't have at least reasonable experience and intelligence regarding the task they're paid to do.

Most of them played college/professional football, most of them coached college/professional football, and in upper managements cases, they've likely already did the assistant coaching/scouting loop that the lesser paid guys have. In short, they've developed the experience to do the job. That's something that I can say with extreme confidence that 100% of fanboard posters have not done, which is why they are not doing this job.

2. Rocket science? Of course not. Exponentially harder than the public thinks? Of course, because the public thinks most people who get paid a lot jobs are easy and they can do them. They think this because they are ignorant and don't have the knowledge required to know.

The NFL draft is an utter crapshoot on an annual basis. You've got qualified people annually who completely whiff on talent... the very same talent that the public thinks is talent as well, and vice versa.

Look, I get it. Guy who lettered at a big high school in the area (probably still wears his jacket) and maybe danced around in a low-level or even decent college program for awhile thinks he understands football at a high enough level that he could put together a better team. I get the mind set. Its wrong, of course, but I get the mindset. There's nobody knocking down fans door for advice on personnel decisions. "Eye for talent" guy isn't drawing the eye of anybody who wants his talent... and that tells me everything I need to know.

Maybe Mcjacket or Bio will have an explanation for this one- Why would we add Jeremy Butler to the 53 man roster only to de-activate him? That move struck me as odd. Also please explain to some bloggers about the cap space next year not being a "spend free" spree just because we lose Rice's and other dead money. Thanks

I'm not one of them, but sometimes mysterious promotions to the 53 mean that another team is trying to poach one of our PS players. The only way to keep him is to promote him to our roster.

They are clueless about the WR position. If they are leaving an open roster slot for a WR that might POTENTIALLY play in a few games "for evaluation" then they collectively failed the ownership on roster management and scouting.

Or it could simply be a case of rewarding a player who is practicing well. I think if you asked Butler, he'd much rather be on the active roster and inactive on gameday than being on the PS...

I mean, I supposed they could put him on IR and promote a WR who has virtually no shot of making this team next season either, but that doesn't seem like it accomplishes much.

When we actually have injured players taking up active roster spots on gameday, then I'll care. Until then, its really meaningless whether Perriman is on IR or not. There's no cavalry on the open market that is saving this WR core, week 1 or week 12.

1. Restructure Joe contract

2. Get rid of Monroe

3. Resign Osemele

3. Sign a top wide receiver in free agency for trade for one - JUST DO IT

4. Draft a safety/CB and pass rusher in the first two rounds with our high picks. The order doesn't matter, but someone that is productive.

With joe restructuring and alot of the dead money coming off the books i dont see why we cant resign Osemele and sign a top WR free agent next offseason. If im wrong someone please tell me why.

Yep, game checks are significantly larger than PS checks.

Because we don't have the cap space.

If you read RSR, we'll basically be right at the cap after tendering FAs and signing draft picks. Any cap space we create will largely come from Joe's extension (if it happens) and the players we release. That's outside of the extension we would give, such as Tucker.

So if you want us to resign Tucker and resign Osemele, you're going to need to cut quite a few more significant players to be able to afford Osemele and a top flight WR.

That also includes a new problem of us needing a LT, which we would likely have to spend a high draft pick on instead of one of the things you wanted.

In short, I wouldn't expect us to resign KO, and getting a top flight WR in FA is probably a stretch also.

Okay so now I hope finally the Brown and Aiken project is over. I would rather have 2-3 WRs for Flacco who can get jammed at the line sometimes but beat their guy deep rather than two guys who get jammed and cannot separate or slowly vanish from the game. Make Ross the slot, Givens and Butler the starters, see who impresses and hold on to them next season. We have Waller for next season so that helps, now to just see where we are with Perrimen. If he shines, great. If not, you know he may need some polishing or time as a depth or package guy before becoming a starter. I know its not going to happen but seriously, if we were to get back rice I would imagine it would be pennys on the dollar contract-wise compared to what he would have been making if not for that bad situation that happened. He needs a team and we need a solid set of RBs. Tali is injured, Allen is good but not yet consistent, and Forsett is doing very well no doubt but could you imagine how much better he would be if he was fresh in the 4th qtr getting dump off and screens and quick gashes up the middle instead of being ran the whole game? TE position going into next season could already be setup. May have to make some hard decisions on Pitta with how the other 3 have played but you would have quality depth for the future. Can we please look at a new LT in 2016? Or at the very least figure out if we could potentially fit Monroe at RT and have Wagner as backup and possible draft or goto FA for a better LT? I think bargain deals for players is great and all but sometimes you have to spend to get quality guys. Flacco deserves a better line then what he has had thus far and if we can give him that much his play will change(you don't throw 11TDs and 0INTS in the playoffs as a fluke). Best case, Perrimen, Waller, Givens, Camp, and Butler/FA/Draft pick will take the 5th spot for the WRs 2016. That will give us the speed to hit deep and also the quickness to go over the middle, and the size for jump balls in the red zone. And on defense, I think some of DBs would probably be a lot better if we can manufacture a quality pass rush to get the QB uncomfortable at the least. Just as the WRs need a solid run game to get open, DBs need a solid pass rush to cut time having to cover their guy and cut off routes......

We've gone from he tweaked his knee - he's day to day, to he should have a shot at playing in October, to maybe after the bye week ... to now, "Perriman has a 'shot' to play this season".

Never seen anything like it.

1. Marlon...the experiment is over... he is just not a starting WR in the NFL.. maybe if we had two healthy and solid WR's a true #1 and #2... Marlon can be a mismatch as a slot WR but when he has to play a bigger role... he is not that guy and we need to look elsewhere 2. Kamar is not a starting WR in the NFL... and we need to look elsewhere. 3. I wish we could trade Monroe but nobody in their right mind would give us anything close to what we have invested in him! He is staying but I think it is time we invested in a starting LT! Cause Monroe is not it! 4. Neither is Hurst for that matter. I think Hurst for being an UDFA has done an admirable job ... but we need better if we are going to get where we are planning on being! 5. It is difficult to evaluate the entire defense until we have a new DC! AS is... nobody looks good enough! (Maybe BWIlliams and CJ would be the only people we would keep) SMH! So I feel like we need to start with a NEW DC... and then we will see if 1. Elam is worth hanging onto or not? 2. If Webb or Jimmy for that matter can ever regain form? 3. If Suggs has anything left (but even if so... he is limited in years and we need to add some pass rushers!). 4. If ABrown can ever live up to his draft status / or CUpshaw for that matter! 5. If we can regain the form of a feared defense once again.... SO I think this is our priority list heading into 2016. 1. Get a new DC 2. Add a LT via the draft 3. Add a veteran WR & CB via FA 4. Add a couple of Pass Rushers through the draft. 5. Add WR depth and CB depth through the draft

I agree.  I also think Perriman could use as much playing time as possible this year,  This was supposed to be his year to get aclimated to the NFL.  He'll have to do that in whatever playing time he can get.  A second year first round pick should be a playmaker. Same frankly for Maxx.  He needs to see the field as much as possible then hit the weight room in the offseason.

Aiken is nothing more than a 3rd WR on any team at best and he's being asked to be the #2 and #@1 when SSS was injured. I like Aiken, but he's been asked to do more than he's able. Brown is done. I can;t imagine how he goes from 524yds, 7TDs as a rookie to being totally irrelevant and ineffective. I blamed Joe for not using him earlier, but it appears that he just doesnp;t trust him. Not sure if that's on Joe (who also seems to have regressed) or on Brown, but his drops say he's done here.

Perriman's status gives me pause about his potential too. Potential is not the question because it is clearly there, but if you never get to use it, it's useless. Whether this extended time out is his PCL or just that he doesn't have the heart to get in there no longer makes any difference. Harbaugh's latest comments cannot be taken at face value and I think the the F.O. is worried about letting the fans know they might've made a serious mistake with Perriman. He could be worse than a "BUST" - a "never-will-be". And trust me, I was thrilled with his pick day one of the draft, I don't make these comments lightly.

All of this very contentious discussion about our team makes me want to just remind everyone. There was one time where our defensive coordinator was quoted referencing one of our players on this website. The title of the article was something to the effect of "Dean Pees on Ray Lewis."

I also wouldn't mind seeing Monroe traded. He's been horrible and I won;t accept injury as an excuse because he's ALWAYS injured. Boohoo, Eugene! Yanda played most of 2013 with a torn labrum in his shoulder. I'm beginning to feel the same about Jimmy Smith too. If he isn;t hurt, he's definitely lolligagging.

It's almost as if the football gods are trying to tell Ozzie not to use a 1st round pick on a Wide Receiver. Mark Clayton and Travis Taylor didn't work out and Perriman is already surrounded with unclear, not-so-positive drama. Even when/if he does take the field this year, a leg injury that sidelines you for 3 months (and counting) is going to degrade one's speed. Given that his main upside is his speed, that is pretty darn depressing.
