[News] Late For Work 10/29: Here's Why Breshad Perriman Isn't On Injured Reserve

138 posts in this topic

Everyone seems to agree that the Ravens simply do not have enough healthy talent to be competitive, which leaves them with the unpleasant task of figuring out how much of their unhealthy talent is going to make the contribution next year that the team was counting on this year

It's way more than just assessing the "unhealthy talent" - what about the healthy talent that is failing to produce on the field (Brown and Aiken) and their roles for the future?

The Perriman piece would seem to make sense if the Ravens didn't draft BPA. If for some reason the Ravens fell to the middle of the first round due to a trade back or some miracle winning streak this season, is it incomprehensible to think they would skip on a top 5/10 talent wide receiver who slid because they saw what they liked in Perriman towards the end of the season?

I don't watch much college football but I've seen the kid (Treadwell) being compared to Dez Bryant in skill set. Would it be a terrible decision to draft someone like him to pair with a healthy Perriman and finally give Joe multiple weapons at WR?

One reason the Steelers and Bengals have surpassed the Ravens in explosiveness is exactly the opposite of the reasoning proposed in this article. They aren't afraid to use high draft picks on offense in back to back drafts. Case in point - Bengals - had Gresham picked Eifert, Had Giovani Bernard picked Jeremy Hill. You can argue their production isn't this good this year but stockpiling offensive talent is clearly working out for them (albeit they have yet to get past the first round in the playoffs). Another case in poin't Steelers - They aren't magical evaluators of WR talent. They use consistent high draft picks on WR nearly every draft (Holmes, Wallace, Emmanuel Sanders, Brown, Martavis Bryant, Wheaton, etc). And even with all those WRs they still drafted Sammie Coates with a high draft pick this past draft. You keep throwing darts, you're bound to hit the target eventually especially with Newsome. Yes, I know the consensus is drafting WRs in Baltimore is bad news but (as I saw another poster say), is giving up on it completely really an appropriate answer even with a 1st round WR in Perriman?

We have a BPA strategy... based on how we develop our draft board.

If it were a true BPA strategy, and the best player was a QB, would we draft him? The answer is no. We create a draft board of best players, formatted around the concept of areas that we wish to address. Its why basically 100% of the time we've taken a player, the "BPA" just so happens to fall at a position that we are looking to upgrade.

So if the Ravens were to go out and add a quality veteran WR or two in FA, then its possible WR wouldn't be high on the draft board, thus making it unlikely they take one early.

"Don't be surprised to see [Givens] get more playing time Week 8 against the Chargers," wrote Clifton Brown. "Givens' speed poses the kind of threat that can help the Ravens' downfield passing attack, creating opportunities not only for Givens, but for teammates working underneath routes.

^ I will be surprised cause this stuff is said EVERY WEEK and we see nothing of it on the field! Smh!

Exactly, they promoted Jeremy Butler from the PS to the 53 roster last week and then he's inactive for the game.  WTH???

Jacoby Jones on the phone asking if it would be nice to return one in his old home: "Duh."

It's not gonna happen Jacoby, we still have Trawick and he'll take you out again.  LOL.

The good thing about next year's drasft - apart from the potentially high draft position for us - is that we have so many need positions and so little depth in varuious positions that it will be almost impossible to ge for the wrong position (assuming Ozzie won't use a top-ten pick on a kicker, punter or long snapper :D)... WR, O-line, D-line, secondary... The only two positions (once again: beside kickers and punters) we don't have a need in are QB and RB - and OK, maybe TE too. Anything else can come... A WR, a pass rusher, a CB, a safety... However, with the sudden appearance of plug'n'play impact WR rookies such as Beckham, Amari Cooper, Evans, Green etc..., and our virutally depleted WR talent pool for 2016 (assuming Steve Smith goes on with his retirement plans which I'm rather confident he will), for me, the layman, it seems almost impossible to pass on a playmaker wideout if there is one on the board when we are on the clock... Just imagine if Flacco had an AJ Green, an Amari Cooper, a Beckham, a Julio Jones to throw to...

I understand the obvious exclusions of BPA. QB is one, picking 7 WRs would be dumb, players that don't fit the scheme etc but BPA still applies more to the Ravens then other team's draft strategy. Clearly they never "reach" to fill a need. I assume this is a reason you saw fans scratching their head when Ray Rice was picked, when TEs Dickson and Pitta were picked back to back, etc. Ravens fans always leave drafts with a couple of head scratching moments. Years ago it just worked so people didn't care and chanted "in ozzie we trust." Now Fans and pundits are starting to question recent failures.

Years ago I would've said the same thing about signing a FA WR and not needing to use a draft pick. However, now I don't think I'm alone in thinking maybe it's time to stop that strategy and finally spend some high draft picks on offensive talent to GROW with Flacco instead of hitting the offensive reset button on chemistry every 2-3 years.

I have to be honest I love the ravens but I think we have to admit the ravens are a team in decline. Dumervil and Suggs are in there 30s Flacco is almost 30 and Forsett is 30 A majority of this team best players are 30 and older and that's too old Ozzie he is gonna have his work cut out for him in the offseason

Maybe Mcjacket or Bio will have an explanation for this one- Why would we add Jeremy Butler to the 53 man roster only to de-activate him? That move struck me as odd. Also please explain to some bloggers about the cap space next year not being a "spend free" spree just because we lose Rice's and other dead money. Thanks

Back to picking the "best available player" and rebuilding our defense. Flacco loves his offense simple and predictable, and we should have kept Boldin and Torrey so he could feel comfortable. Even Perriman as a new threat wouldn't have been any better than Maxx Williams.

Yeah, this season seems to be one of the promises vanishing in thin air... Players have to play more disciplined... they can't make dumb mistakes... they have to be more effective... Flacco says he can't go out and then make stupid mistakes... The secondary has to start playing well... There are claims like this coming from Harbaugh or athers day by day - and then the guys go out and do the same mistakes again and again...

another thing I cannot help noticing how "sad", disillusioned, disheartened and at time clueless Harbaugh's face seems to be during games this season. Like he's just learned his favourite dog died... Or like he's ill... Anything but the face of a determined, highly energetic leader. Not as if it was a problem per se - Belichick's face always looks like this, for example :) - but it's impossible not to see the difference between this and how Harbaugh's face "normally" looks during game: full of energy and concentration, pumped up, agile... Well, not this season... Let's hope there's nothing more behind it thn what he sees on the field.

We may not resign Flacco lets get the best QB in the draft and start over. We can be 1-6 with a rookie QB why waste all our money on a guy who doesn't improve every year. Same old Joe every year.

I have no idea. I was baffled by the Butler-move, too. Maybe at the time they weren't sure Waller could play, so hey moved Butler to the active roster as an insurance - andwhen Waller was cleared to go, Butler wasn't necessary? Tht's just a guess, of course - the best can come up with.

What I do know, is that roster moves can often be baffling to the layman - even really good ones. too many variables - many of them unknown for us - involved.

As for the 2016 cap space analyses.. .there are some very good, objective, accurate and painfully detailed cap analyses out there - my favourite one being the one on Russel Street Report (and here are another good one about the dead money miscnceptions), but there are other likewise thorough and trustworthy ones, too. Unfortunately, there also are several that are written either by guys who are plain incompetent or ones not impartial enough.

That makes sense, I forgot about Waller and the concussion. I thought they would activate Butler for Special Teams at least. Oh well I have no idea either. Any answer on the Cap money being saved? I know that there is 20 million in dead money being lifted but that does not mean that we have all of that money to spend.

Jacoby will have to return a punt. He won't get a chance to return a kick-off the way Tucker is putting them out of the end zone

Givens should be a starter this Sunday and you're stupid if you think Monroe is being traded anywhere.I can think of 5 reasons off the top of my head why that wouldn't make sense.

Koch is having a great season too. I doubt that he gives Jacoby anything to return.

Please, Please STOP making excuses for Jimmy Smith. He just has not played with solid technique and consistently get neat on the bump. That is not his foot!

The second link in my previous comment points to an article that is exactly about our dead money situation ;)

I think the excuses for Jimmy Smith are valid in most people's minds because it just seems like the most reasonable explanation of how you go from shutting down everyone before the injury in 2014 and getting burnt by rookies after in the beginning of 2015.

I think your wrong on this one. He lost all of his fellow players honestly. Nobody from that starting team we had on our SB run is still here besides him & Webb. But imagine how hard it is for him playing now without the D-line we used to have that made it easier for our DB's to cover.

Honestly the best CB's cant cover forever, we need a better pass rush first of all.

Brown was picked in the 3rd Round by the Steelers. Not a high pick. Another one we missed on.

In retrospect, I bet they wish they released all the CBs except Webb and Smith and resigned Corey Graham 2 years ago. I am exaggerating about releasing everyone but Graham was solid and still is for Buffalo now. Hopefully Will Davis can come on strong next year as a slot CB.
