Carl Nassib (DE): Why He Needs to Be a Raven

28 posts in this topic

I see there's a thread on Bosa, and while I like him, I actually like Carl Nassib more. I know that's probably crazy to say but Nassib plays with an intensity and relentlessness I haven't seen in some time. He's quick off the edge and absolutely knows how to get to the QB. He can beat double teams as well, since he dominated Ohio State right side when they tried to double him. That's just one instance where he beat a double team.

He also comes up big when he's needed. I love that about him. I haven't seen him quit at all this year and I put a lot of emphasis in that.

The negatives I've seen are his instincts against the run and his ability to drop in coverage and set the edge. I see him purely as a pass rusher but I think he'll be an outstanding one. He's athletic enough to make this transition and reminds me of Suggs due to his profile coming out of college. Suggs was explosive off the snap but needed work in all the areas I mentioned.

The only thing I may dislike is his height because he's very tall, but if he moves right and uses good technique he should still be able to dominate professional NFL OL and tackles.

Here are a slew of articles that show why I think so highly of him:

http://espn.go.com/blog/bigten/post/_/id/124796/how-psus-carl-nassib-went-from-skinny-overlooked-walk-on-to-among-nations-sack-leaders

I think he deserves to go high second at the latest. I think he's criminally underrated but I honestly expect him to have a big rise come the combine.

Grim, you've been talking about this guy for awhile. Least I can do is look at his film. Any idea what round he'll go in?

I honestly don't look at draft projections at this point. Some are obvious, like Bosa, Ramsey, Hargreaves, while others are elusive since they aren't discussed much. I have no idea where he goes, but I'm projecting high 2nd round based on what I've seen. I don't like this pass rusher class much at all, but I think he has the chance to be a very special player so it makes sense he may go higher than expected. I love how he plays because I don't see him ever quit. That's so important to me.

what i like about nassib, is that he is 6'7" and still has that natural leverage that most people his size dont have. guys like shawn oakman and arik armstead have a problem with standing straight up, they cant lean forward enough to gain leverage because at that size they develop a mental block, sort of like the bodys defense mechanism preventing them from falling over, nassib doesnt seem to have that, it is rare to find a 6'7" guy who can still keep his pad level in a blockers torso, thats an indication of future success to me, thats why i like him over a tall and super strong freak like oakman and armstead

Yeah, I see the same. He doesn't get too upright and doesn't lose his leverage. I also love his long arms because he can really make those stretch plays that guys smaller than him can't. He's also a leader out there and you can see it. If you watch that video I posted you'll see him out there getting fired up and talking to the other guys. I just love everything about him. He needs work, but he flashes the potential and he came up with a really nice looking interception!

Nassib has also become my favorite prospect as of late. I would actually prefer that we trade back and pass on Bosa for a guy like Ramsey or Hargreaves and grab him later.

I think him and Bosa have a very similar skill set and ceiling, where as Bosas floor is higher

that film against buffalo is the same video i watched a week ago, i like him alot, i dont think as highly of him as you do but i do think he is an immediate contributor, 6-7 sacks as a rookie in the right system.

My guess is he ends up a mid to late 1st rounder, assuming he has a good offseason. He'd be a good trade back target.

if he rises that much i would pass. i like nassib as a early 2nd. if we dont land bosa in the first then i like him very much for the 2nd round, assuming we are picking top 5. i love the thought of nkemdiche in the first and nassib in the 2nd, that is a scary tandem, but i hate the thought of picking very early and abandoning the secondary and wr corps 2 picks straight.

If he is available at that point, it would be ideal, but in a weak class in terms of pass rushers, I can see him going round 1.

I don't think I see Bosa when I watch him. I see a better Urban, I'd agree, but I have no idea to whom I should compare him.

I don't think he'll go in that range. I wouldn't trust predictions at this point for a guy like him because we've seen guys skyrocket because these evaluators don't always know NFL evaluations.

I absolutely saw speed. I'm sorry you didn't but he clearly showed explosion and he chased down the QB who had some yards on him.

I think this is very possible. This weak pass rusher class will likely cause him to rise during the process because he's a lot better imo than some of these guys currently ranked higher.

i dont know if that justifies taking him in the mid first though. if bpa is motto then you just look at other positions at that point

I don't know. I really think Nassib is very talented, but I'm not sure I like him in the first round. We've seen players drop and rise who were considered high and low picks, though. Nobody had Alvin Dupree as a first round pick this time last year. In fact, I remember saying he could go in the first and people debated with me that he would go in the second and we all know how that worked out. Then again, nobody had Ansah high and he surprised everyone. Everyone also had high opinions on where Kikaha would go, but he only went in the third.

You should lower expectations , the Ravens never draft who you want.

This is exactly why I never have favorites. As long as we address our needs, I'm happy.

I try real hard not to "fall in love" with a prospect, but a few years ago I did. I absolutely craved Dennis Pitta. When we took Dickson instead I nearly freaked out. The next morning we picked up Pitta and he far surpassed Dickson. This past Spring I really wanted Agholor. Can't win them all. :-(

I'm still upset that the Giants took OBJ.

In a way I'm glad they took him. I'm pretty sure we said we'd take Mosley over everyone after 10 and I couldn't handle knowing we passed Odell over.

I really liked agholor as well - he is who I wanted if we went receiver ....but I was really secretly hoping for Marcus peters. Neither of them fell to us anyway, but man has peters looked fantastic. Edited by January J

watched the game for Maryland - Penn st.  Nassib nothing special . I can't see anything in him. I don't realy understand why everybody talk about him like a top prospect.

and I feel bad coz it's probably mean that I don't know anything about football. right?

If you can't see it then I can't help you. I wish you did see it. I just really like how he plays. Keep watching and maybe he surprises you and you see it eventually.
