Need vs BPA 2016 edition

59 posts in this topic

this will frequently spark heated debates around these parts, so this should be fun to argue with the pressure of a probable top 10 pick!

let the arguing begin!

NEED PICKS:

jalen ramsey - fs is the biggest need on the team, but ramsey is a rare breed at a thin position.

vernon hargreaves - small frame, big play, strong technique, polished.

treadwell/boyd - good WRs are always gonna be argued about amongst ravens fans come draft season, with our current wr corps and picking high for the first time in years, the arguments arent gonna stop.

Leonard Floyd - explosive pass rush specialist and is also good in coverage, one of the more explosive OLBs i have seen, vic beasley type talent, but may struggle due to a thin frame.

BPA PICKS:

joey bosa - no need to explain

ronnie stanley - monroe is under contract, but is playing poorly on the rare occasion that he IS healthy. i dont know if ozzie is capable of passing on a cornerstone caliber LT, nor would i want him to, they are hard to come by and they are still the 2nd most important position to a team behind the qb

robert nkemdiche - were stacked at DT, so drafting a DT so high would indeed be frustrating at first glance, but nkemdiche is special, he would certainly be a DE for us, and he may even be capable of playing OLB, he is that athletic, he would make it impossible to run to the left, and he can slide around effectively and offer a lethal pass rush inside and out, the kind of player that cant be rotated out because he is simply too good. the type of player who becomes our new identity.

who should get the pick if theyre available? in this order... bosa, stanley, ramsey, nkemdiche, and in my opinion everyone else is a big step down from this tier. i gotta go with BPA this year for the most part, with our need at FS pushing ramsey into the fold.

Pretty sure Bosa would be classified as a need… We absolutely need a standup pass rusher.

Yeah. I don't see why we can't fill a need and go BPA. This team has a lot of needs but Ozzie tries to fill needs in free agency so the draft is more about BPA. With Steve wanting a pass rusher even last draft, I think the owner gets what he wants. Bosa is the only guy I really want atm. I do like quite a few guys, though.

After him I think it's Hargreaves then Ramsey. After that I'm looking at Stanley then WR like Treadwell or Boyd.

I'm just here to say Bosa is Overrated.

That is all.

PS. We've been drafted by need for years.

What's your rationale? Just curious and I always like to hear reasons for disliking a prospect widely seen as the best. I didn't like Clowney as many can attest due to my comments. I at least explained why.

Just watch full games of Bosa's. People watch his highlights and assume he's a Watt Clone. In games he's not anywhere near as good as they say. Plus he has off the field issues along with only having like 2 sacks this year. i

I've watched every Ohio State game this year and I understand somewhat but I don't fully agree. He's really athletic and he has a great motor and he also applies a lot of pressure. No, he doesn't have the numbers but he really applies a lot of pressure on the QB.

The character concerns to worry me, though, to be honest, but I'm not sure if they're overblown. He was suspended for a game, so it's something to watch for sure.

Plus look at his defense as a whole. That's a great D-line, wouldn't take much to look good.

If he does exceptionally well tonight I'll re-evaluate it but for now, he's a boom or bust player. Top 5 picks shouldn't be boom or bust players. Also NFL scouts have openly said he's overrated.

Ramsey>>Boyd>Treadwell>Floyd>Bosa IMO

If you're at the bottom you take a need. You may think reversal but if you're at the bottom you usually don't have too many holes to fill. Top 15 and above you take the BPA. And yes, Bosa is overrated. But he's easily the best defensive player in this class. He gets tons of pressure on the QB and has a hell of a motor.

And an NFL dline is typically better than a college Dline. Sorry man. It's true.

You take BPA for one reason and one reason only. Because that's who you think will make the team better instantly.

The best players in the draft imho are

1. Bosa

2. Robert N

3. Ramsey

4. Stanley

5. Boyd.

Operating on the assumption that we will be picking in this range though, Stanley and Nkemdiche are the only 2 guys that aren't necessarily needs that I'd take in a second.  I think both have the ability to be elite players in the NFL, and I'd be more than okay having 1 of those guys on the roster.

Yes, but Bosa has constantly been getting pressure. Watt wasn't even Watt in college. In fact, Bosa has been much better than Watt was in college.

I'd go with Ramsey. The safety position has underperformed this year and has been a gaping hole since the departure of Ed reed. We need a guy like Ramsey. Although I wouldn't complain with bosa. If we happen to get a top ten pick (I don't think we will) I think we should also trade up out of the second into the back end of the first and get two premiere players. I'm not sure where treadwill or Myles jack would land but if we could manage Ramsey and either of them that would be ideal.

I like how the Announcers ignored the fact that the Blitzing DB started the tackle that Bosa merely finished and ONLY praise Bosa.

You really don't like Bosa, do you?

He's just overrated. Don't think he deserves a top 5 pick. On his Twitter he seems like a great guy. When you constantly see people stroke a guy watch out. I just hope we don't draft him. We don't need him that high when there are other players of bigger need there.

Yeah, I understand your sentiments. I'm always wary of a guy many people hype up. They don't tend to live up to expectations. It's a scary thought, so I do understand where you're coming from here, but you do seem like you have a hatred for the guy, lol.

Twice in one thread we have mentions that Bosa may not be a big need… Has anyone seen our pass rush without Suggs?  We could absolutely use a dynamic presence off the edge.  Suggs and Dumervil aren't getting any younger.

I do agree that we need a standup pass rusher. I feel that an edge rusher is badly needed on this team. I don't like this draft class of edge rushers, more 4-3 OLBs than 3-4 OLBs early on. I think we sign a pass rusher quiet honestly.

If I were to rank needs, I would go FS>WR/OLB>CB

If I were to rank prospects, I would go...

1.) Bosa

2.) Stanley

3.) Hargreaves

4.) Ramsey

5.) Big Rob

Personally I like Bosa the most, but from 3-4, I really like Hargeaves. I would pick Ramsey because of the need at FS, but Hargreaves is so good he is so hard to pass up. It would be a super difficult decision for Oz if Hargreaves and Ramsey were on the board. I surely wouldn't want to be the one in charge making that choice. Stanley would be a luxury pick, he would be great here as well. Man can you imagine him with Ricky Wagner back to 100%??? The Great Wall of Protection.

I rank our urgent needs all pretty evenly in all honesty. FS = CB = Edge = WR > LT ... depth/developmental players at ILB, ROLB, OL needed too.

WR

I am pretty confident Treadwell will fall into the later part of the first round. Questions regarding his ability to separate will keep him down, just like J.Matthews. I'm also not sure if Boyd is really an elite talent worthy of a top-10 pick. He could just be the best in a draft class with no truly elite WR prospects (I would rank him below Watkins, OBJ, Cooper, and White, maybe even with Evans). I want to see Boyd's combine numbers.

LT

I will rank Tunsil even with Stanley once he finishes the season the way he played last year. I would draft a LT in the first round due to the difficulty in finding one drafting in the 20s/30s every year, even though it's a lesser need. I think most of us agree on this.

Edge

I don't like how weak Leonard Floyd is against the run. He's basically a taller Dumervil. He should go in the late teens or 20s.

I actually like Calhoun more than Floyd because he is more complete as a player, like a poor man's Suggs. He needs to add weight though. Still a teens pick.

Nkemdiche has some work ethic issues that I've read about. Plus he doesn't get as many sacks as you would think. Physically, he is an absolute freak. A man his size shouldn't be that quick and nimble. He is made of muscle. If whoever drafts him can get him to play to his potential they'll have a perennial probowler. He could play 34 DE or DT.  /actually, he could probably replace Upshaw at ROLB if you needed him to.

DB

I am on the Hargreaves bandwagon. He is a can't-miss prospect, and my favorite player in this draft.

I haven't watched enough Ramsey to know much about him, so all I can do is take y'all's word that he is awesome lol. Fits a big need for sure.

Haven't really paid attention to any other DBs.

..

There is too much fluidity right now between our draft position and where players will go, so I can't really play the game you proposed lol. I'll just say that if we're on the board and Bosa, Hargreaves, Tunsil, Stanley, Ramsey, or Nkemdiche are there, I'll be happy.

Here's hoping Goff, Cook, Hack, and Cardale have amazing 2nd halves to the season and push the good players down to us.

Unless Bosa and N are there, you take the LT.... While it's not as important as everyone makes it seem(one could argue the center is a much more important position), you always take the LT...

100% agree, Stanley strikes me as a fail safe pick, if we took him first overall it would still be a good pick. The rarity and value of an elite LT far outweighs any pass rusher or receiver by far

but would boasa be able to play olb would he make that transition ? Has anyone ever see him rush standing up ??? I have yet to witness this he seems like a 4-3 de isn't that the defense Ohio state runs ?

i just see bosa as more of a DE than an OLB. I think oddly enough the top DT seems like a better fit at OLB than the top DE does, I may be in the minority but I think nkemdiche could be a stud OLB

Nkemdiche is nearly 300 pounds, while Bosa is around 270. It'd definitely be a transition for Bosa as a standup OLB, but that would be his most natural fit in a 3-4 unless a team wants him to add weight.

ive never checked their weights but nkemdiche just seems to have more explosion and athleticism, I also just started following nkemdiche recently, at first glance he appears to be slimmer and more athletic

Boss would definitely fill a need. He'd play OLB in a 3-4 scheme. Nkemdiche would play 5 tech in a 3-4 defense.

On most downs, yeah. On pure passing downs, Nkemdiche could kick out to OLB to be an edge rusher.
