[News] Ravens Reach 4-Year Extension With Marshal Yanda

96 posts in this topic

You realize having a pro-bowl caliber Guard like Yanda, who can protect Flacco and create running lanes, is pretty vital right? You can sign all the WRs you want, they won't catch any balls when the QB doesn't have time to throw them or without a running game.

I do not think some fans understand the old saying that games are won and lost in the trenches. Give an average QB all day to throw the ball and he can put up big numbers.

Great. He's protected, now what? he can sit in the pocket now and do what? nothing, because theres no one to throw to. Terrific. The point of protection is to have time to throw. But theres no one to throw to sooo..

I see KO going and John Urshel taking his place.. unless they have plans to use him at center because he is that durable. That would be an amazing turn of events if they signed both guards and were polishing Urshel to play center.

Great  Good move.  Question? Why would he sign with the team now when it is under .500.  You would think more opportunity for Marshall when the season ends.  Prooves::: He wants to be here and is a true Raven

Correct, but you need both. And we locked up crucial part of one of them.

If you have any ideas of WRs we could sign and why they would make this team better, by all means, please share.

when we are out of it they should move osemele to LT and see if he can handle it and if urshel can be dominant at LG. if it works than try to trade monroe to free of that contract $$.

Probably wouldn't save any money though, since you'd have to resign Osemele as a LT.

On a net basis, you MIGHT break even, and it actually might cost you money.

Yanda is Joe's security blanket..  when this guy fails...  Joe's in trouble.

This is really, Really Great news. After Tucker, I felt that Yanda was our most important potential FA we had to re-sign. Great job, FO!

IF that experiment were tried and found to be successful, I think that it might be worth it. You are most likely correct about the financial aspect of that move, but if our OL is improved, that has to be a consideration as well. I Do think that Monroe has been a disappointment and an upgrade at LT is something we should be trying to attain.

Yanda was the choice over Osemele. No brainer. Glad the Ravens got it done. Now, if they could only judge talent for the draft and stop with the wide recevier obsession, our defense just might get better.

great news. hate to lose osemele but hopefully there will be a way to sign him once all the dead money is off the books. tucker resigning is a guarantee.

Hopefully ... but it is hard to tell at this point.

Yes, there will be a lot of dead money going off the books after this year, but what fans often forget is how the cap hit for players not currently on their rookie contracts escalate year to year. It isn't just Joe ... I noted that J. Smith is due a 6M increase. I did note at a glance that some ... like Doom, Suggs, Monroe, all had their most significant increases this past year.

Of course, there will be some cost cutting measures we're likely to take - but all of that will create new dead money to be dealt with ... not to mention the holes that will be left to fill after those moves are made. SSS retirement .. but also I fully expect Pitta and Webb to be released.

Then there is Suggs ... who knows what is going to happen with him. If he's willing (and able) to play next year, I think he remains a Raven, in part because letting him go will actually cost money, not save money. He's on our books for a whopping 3 more years. It is getting increasingly hard to envision him playing out that contract.

As always, it is going to be a challenging off-season for the FO.

I'd hardly call drafting a 1st round WR for the first time in over a decade and picking only 1 WR earlier than round 6 in the past 4 years an "obsession".

Given that 7 of our 9 picks in the 1st = 3rd rounds in the past 3 years - I'd say that the focus has been on the defensive side of the ball. Now, as for the talent evaluation ... there perhaps you have a point. The results on those 7 selections have been somewhat mixed. Two clear successes (Mosely and Williams), Two clear failures (Elam and Brown) and the jury still out on the other 3 (Davis, Jernigan and Brooks).

I'm glad Oz didn't cheap out on Yanda-

If Tucker was smart, he should not agree to a deal right away. Kickers are so much more vital these days it extra points being harder to get. Teams will be paying a lot more premium for this after this year. If he hits the open market after his franchise tag, he will definitely be the highest paid kicker- maybe he would go to back to Texas/ Cowboys. If Oz is smart, he'll make him the highest paid kicker now before he opens the FA market.
