Compensatory Pick Speculation

39 posts in this topic

This thread is speculating how high/low our compensatory picks for 2016 will be. What do you guys think is a best/worst case scenario?

These were the UFAs we lost in 2015:

Tyrod Taylor: 3 year/3.35 mil

Pernell McPhee: 5/40

Torrey Smith: 5/40

Darian Stewart: 2/4.25

Owen Daniels: 3/12.5

Keep in mind:

-You can only get 4 picks (and we signed Kendrick Lewis, which nullifies 1 loss)

-Picks are awarded based on salary, playing time, performance, and honors (such as a pro-bowl)

-There are only 32 compensatory picks total, and the amount in a given round varies year to year.

---

The signing of Kendrick Lewis is commensurate to Owen Daniels imo, so that takes him out of the equation.

McPhee is having a good season. He seems like a 3rd or 4th round pick. Definitely a 3rd if he gets a pro-bowl.

Torrey got paid, but I doubt he makes a pro bowl. He seems like a 4th round pick.

Stewart got a cheap deal, but he has been playing surprisingly well. Wouldn't be surprised if he's a 5th.

Tyrod is the one I'm not sure about. His contract was cheap, but you would have to think losing a QB who potentially starts a full season (knock on wood) has to count for something. There aren't a lot of examples of UFA backup QBs leaving to start all 16 the next season from what I can find. The closest comparisons are guys who were at least somewhat proven and got decent contracts (Veterans with starting experience).

I think a best/worst case scenario is:

3rd/4th (McPhee)

5th/7th (Tyrod)

4th/5th (Torrey)

5th/7th (Stewart)

Here's hoping for some high comp. picks in 2016. Never seen a team get two 3rd round comp. picks, so I don't even know if that's possible, but I don't see why not.

*also just for the sake of completeness, we also own Denver's 4th round pick, and possibly SF's 7th round pick (conditional pick, and then Easton was traded, so who knows how that works). And we gave Miami a 7th for Will Davis.

Honestly considering how this year is going, i wouldnt mind if we fell a bit and reloaded during next years draft. Considering the amount of picks we will have (probably high picks as well) it wouldnt be to bad to have to re-load through the draft, get our guys back healthy, and tear everyone up next year (with a team full of young talent)

I doubt we'd get anything that high for Tyrod, he's played alright but his contract was dirt cheap and its not like he's been amazing or anything. That contract of his brings him down a lot, I'd say we'd be lucky to get a 5th for him. The others are believable though.

My guesses

4th Torrey, got paid slightly more so my guess is that he is first although I see both being pretty close

4th McPhee, my guess is he is a pretty solid 4th rounder for us as well

5th Daniels, see this one being a late 5th comp but could be in the 6th depending on how he does the rest of the way

6th Tyrod, have a feeling the playing time helps him out here a good bit, he didn't go for much but starting for the Bills has to count for something

See Lewis and Stewart canceling each other out as they have similar prices per year and are at the same position

Considering the likelihood of the Niners and Bears making the playoffs, I agree with this. With that said, there's an outside chance McPhee could make the Pro Bowl.

I'd love to see Ravens fans stuff the ballot to get McPhee to the Pro Bowl. May as well try to get Tyrod there while we're at it too. :P

When does voting open up, may just have to go out and vote for both lol

Lol, this did not occur to me, but I may actually cast some votes this year.

If Dalton can get in twice despite his previous seasons, I don't see why Tyrod can't.

Yeah, I'm probably dreaming /w getting a 3rd for Tyrod. There really isn't a previous player to compare him to from what I can find, so I have no clue what we can get. If they weigh salary the heaviest and give less consideration to position and overall impact on the following team, then he's probably worth a 6th at best. The formula is an NFL secret for whatever reason.

Apparently it opens around Week 8. Imagine the boilover in Ravens Talk if Tyrod gets to a Pro Bowl before Joe.

I believe the Ravens salary cap guy on Twitter has said he doubts Tyrod brings in a pick.

He might be able to bring in a 7th if he plays the rest of the season, but he doesn't have the sized contract and probably won't get the accolades to bring it much higher. It's likely entirely dependent on how much playing time he gets, which isn't hard if he stays healthy the rest of the year.

Agreed on all accounts. I don't see the Bills making the playoffs, so that certainly hurts his chances.

I saw the same thing on overthecap. I believe they had him as he 33rd so 1st out but it could change with the playing time but contract size was the issue

That's an excellent idea. Worthy of mention in game day threads tbh. Lol

everyone should vote for McPhee for the pro bowl.  ......  Ooops, if I had read one thread further I would seen the same quote.  lol

Gonna revive this thread to bring up my updated guess on what we get

McPhee 4th, nothing to knock him down to the 5th and too many others ahead of him for me to see him going to the third.

Torrey 4th, again should be a pretty easy one as he had a solid amount of playing time and I don't see him being knocked back to a 5th and definitely not going to get us a 3rd.

Daniels 6th, this one I think is still up in the air a bit as Daniels has gotten some decent playing time and I don't want to rule out a 5th but I think there is a pretty high chance it ends up as a 6th

Tyrod 7th, I think(hope) we end up getting something for him, according to some we should get one for him but I'd be shocked if it were higher than a 7th.

I think it could well be that, but I'm reluctant to believe it when I see guys on that list at around $600k counting as potential 7th round comp picks.

The two 4th picks and the 5th is the only important picks.

So are we getting a draft pick from the 9ers for the Nick Easton trade? Originally it was a conditional pick(I had read it was a 7th rd pick too), but then the 9ers traded him to the Vikings.  Anyone have an answer?

Not sure but it's possible since he wasn't cut but went to Minnesota, so maybe that saved us.

Doesn't look like we're getting anything.  The 49ers' 7th round pick (which is what it was assumed to be at the time) was sent with Vernon Davis to Denver.

Could we end up with the Vikings 7th rounder????

I'd be surprised if they even considered the possibility that Easton would get traded again (how often is a UDFA traded once, much less twice, in the same season?), so it's very possible/likely that the conditions of the pick only contemplated that Easton remain on SF's 53 for the entire season.

As such, I'd be surprised if they get anything for him.

He got traded twice and still hasn't been on an active gameday roster.  Quite impressive.

It sucks, the 9ers used him as a bargaining chip to acquire a player, for me that would consummate the trade.  But not if it wasn't put in the trade language.  If it wasn't then that's not what I expect from Ozzie and Co.

It's hard to say whether he counts as compensation or not since nobody really knows the details; however, the Niners GM should be fired if he has to trade us a seventh round pick for a player who never made the active roster on game day and who they traded to another team. That would be robbery. Ozzie may even go to jail.

Well to be fair, this is the 49ers we are talking about. It is far from the worst decision they have made this year
