I get it losing to the Browns is the most embarrassing loss in all my years of this team going back to 96. That doesn't mean a wholesale change after one season is called for. You have to look at the big picture. Well you don't as long as the decision makers continue to.

That is ridiculous they lost in OT.  As lately as 2007 we lost 9 straight.  Remember getting humiliated by the Steelers 38-7?

Tied at first and second in catches for rookie tight ends.

The focus on raw receiving totals doesn't do his performance justice. He's been rock solid on film thus far. That being said, in re-watching our offensive plays in several games, I noticed that our tight end usage in general isn't conventional. In those games, there were times where we've lined up all three of ours and Kyle Juszczyk at either the Y or even the X. From there on, their roles were somewhat predictable as they'd mostly sell out immediately to block in the screen/running game. There were less than a handful of occasions when they would shoot up the sideline in an attempt to draw coverage from the CBs, but the corners typically sat on the routes given that we lack of foot speed at the position to pose serious threats in those scenarios.

I've also seen numerous times when we've sent Williams up the seam into double coverage. I couldn't be certain whether they were predetermined clear outs, but it's safe to say that he wasn't the intended on those plays. From what I've seen, he's been able to find separation in the short-to-intermediate game. A few throws were a touch too far and I felt that those were a result of a lack of timing between he and the QB, partly having to do with Williams lacking a second gear, which Flacco should adjust to in due time. He's impressed as a blocker in all phases to this point, and he typically finishes blocks through the whistle. The sad truth is that we have 10 targets among all 3 TEs of 10 yards or longer, one of which was practically a Hail Mary. There are countless TEs who have cleared that mark individually. Unless that average changes, I'd consider big statistical games by either of the three to be a pleasant surprise.

I too have others in mind. Ben Roethlisberger hanging 6 TDs on us last season was one of the least pleasant ones. The debacle against Denver in our 2013 opener also stung. My personal most embarrassing one, however, was the loss against Pittsburgh in the playoffs after we were winning 21-7 at half time. The phrase 3rd and 19 has been forever etched into my mind. Generally speaking, it's a subjective topic I feel.

A dominant running game will always go a long way. Definitely a shame on the latter. Haven't seen much of him but I've obviously heard great things.

I was talking to Grim about this (colluding) and I think it's fairly telling that the Cowboys, even with Dez and Romo already, didn't really take off and become a truly elite unit until last season, when Frederick was a year wiser and they added Martin. Say what you want about the NFL being a passing league, but having the kind of OL that even I could probably run for 4ypc behind does so much to open up the passing game, and it lets the Cowboys kill the clock if they need to (Ozzie knows we could have used a couple of time-strangling drives this season).

I wouldn't be opposed to finding a Julio/Green/Brown/Dez type (who knows, Perriman might yet be that), but just a couple of decent players who can get open every now and then is fine by me too - and that's why I don't mind us bargain hunting for veterans. It's just the depth that bugs me.

i still, for the life of me, cannot understand how so many people just ate up the hype by the spoonful, i mean people really thought that jeremy butler was gonna be some superstar outta nowhere, they thought aiken was gonna literally quadruple his production last year with ease, they thought for the past 3 years that marlon brown was quite literally our future #1... i swear it is the anti-stigma of a tall wr, if a wr is 6'2" or more(like everyone on that list) then the bandwagon is immediately full steam ahead and everyone is expecting that wr to be the next megatron or aj green, it doesnt work like that, most absurdly tall wr's are horrible because for someone that big to be coordinated and athletic enough to be a well rounded WR is extremely rare.

thats the thing.

people just fall for all the hype and then set some unrealistic expectations and when it does not happen they want to fire/trade/cut everyone.

i believed our roster was good enough to compete and win games when healthy but i believed even more when certains guys get injured we are in trouble.

I am not worried about fans buying into the hype. Who cares? But apparently the FO and the coaching staff bought into as well.

they believed when healthy we could compete and win games.

so far we havent been healthy since week 1 yet have been in every game and could have been 6-0 instead of 1-5.

you might have a point if we where getting blown out each and every week.

I've stated this is my last Oz post before. I'm going to say one last thing and then let events take their course and refrain from commenting upon the subject again unless something comes up to overwhelm my no comment threshold.

Has anyone looked around the league at the men that played in the 70's and 80's in regard to their overall condition? One of my heroes of that era was Tony Dorsett.  He was small and fast and watching him I thought I could possibly be an NFL star even though I was small and not so fast. (I did have great hands however.)  Poor Tony is really struggling and he is a bit younger than Ozzie. (Correction he is older at 61) there's hosts of others struggling but Dorsett rarely took direct hits, because he was closer to a finesse back than a power back.

How many other "Defense Era" players are in Front Offices around the NFL?  And what I'm implying of course is the neural degeneration that every bona fide study is concluding now.

We have slipped with the passage of time. Something is going on.

Thats one thing i dont think people that blast Oz for having bad not stellar drafts lately.  Oz has been doing this for 20 years and his overall success is great.  Now sure, take a GM thats been doing it for 4 years and hit on some good picks, yea its going to look pretty damn good, but no one ever gives comparisons, they just say we didnt pick Jeffery, or Diggs, or so so....

yup pretty much.

the man track record speak for itself.

now if we the next 2 seasons are going to be like this then yeah maybe its time to reconsider.

but 1 bad year like this aint nearly enough to waste all the credit he has build up so far.

also even if he does retire , not much is going to change since decosta is pretty much like him.

i think its a real mood point cause but decosta and ozzie would have to go if people really want a big change and i just dont see it happening.

Even that being said, he cant help injuries.  Losing our best defensive player, one of the best pass rushers in the league really set back the team, then more injuries...we will never know what this team would of done healthy so its really hard to judge this year.

I agree with the posts above. I do think Oz should get back to building a dominant run game and defense. As long as we have good weapons to throw to it would be fine. We need good WRs and an elite defense. If I had the choice Id rather have a Good offense and elite defense rather than an elite offense and good defense. I think we should really build on the defense. I think the offense will be fine.

Fans screaming for first round WR's and offensive players in the low rounds.  It's happened as recently as this past draft.  I remember when Ozzie selected Mosley, people were like "What?"  Another LB from Alabama!!!!  But It was a great pick.  I will withhold judgment on Perryman until we see if he is capable.  But I have said time and again I thought he had a better set of hands than Torrey, and fought for the catch.  We'll see.  But, yeah, I think Givens adds to our corps.  I also think that Ross has a lot of potential as well...  Add in what we currently have, and we could be a very good offense.  We're putting the points on the board, with the potential to put even more.  Considering two TD drops Sunday...  and a slew of injured players  Our defense is letting us down this year.

Yup... let's go defense next year.

Yea but Oz has some stinkers...that elam/brown draft....ugh...that's ur first 2 picks that most likely won't be on ur team in 2 years.

Those 2 definitely aren't panning out, I liked both picks a lot at the time ( although I really wanted cyprien at Safety and K.Minter Lb ) I was high on both so were most Draft Analysts NFL.com, ESPN, CBS, Fox etc those picks were viewed as solid picks that would help mold future Baltimore defenses.

The team tried to make Elam into coverage safety when the guy was in box safety in college. Somewhere along the way he forgot how to tackle and that was his strongest attribute ( maybe he lost confidence and started pressing who knows but his football IQ definitely needs improvement ). Arthur Brown is just a curious case of the Ravens, I mean we signed a veteran in D.Smith he's been highly productive but this team played guys like Josh Bynes and McClellan ahead of Brown his rookie year and given their lack of production I still feel like this team made an error in not getting brown the snaps when they were available.

Now we have a pretty good sample side of Safeties failing horribly within this defense the last 3 seasons. It's really scary that appears the team thinks that any of these guys can be tossed out there and run a similar scheme as if Ed Reed is still back there. These guys don't have the natural talent, ability or overall IQ to line up at the line scrimmage then be counted on to somehow cover the back-in. Its be seen over and over again now with blown coverages, misunderstanding what gives.

Wait...  we were not healthy.  And we really aren't a bad team.  Smith plays with 4 microfractures in his back, and is our #1???  Catches 7 passes and as much as I hate to bringing it up, he drops two in the endzone???  Tucker steps in a 4" deep sinkhole to miss a fieldgoal.  And we still put 20 on the boards.  We blow them out had these things not occurred.

This article kind of goes with this thread. It highlights how the team has failed to draft and develop and/or keep skill position playmakers over the last 5 years WR, RB , TE in comparison to Steelers, Bengals ( whom both have plenty of young offensive talent added through the draft )

http://www.csnmidatlantic.com/blog/ravens-talk/recent-drafts-have-not-produced-enough-playmakers

Some guys could just be special and hard workers and become good or great players but the steelers WRs coach needs to get some credit he's played a major role in developing A.Brown, M.Bryant, M.Wheaton, then there's guys like (Saunders now in Denver), (M.Wallace Minnesota). The steelers have drafted WR low and developed them. We haven't hit a diamond in the rough yet. Our 4,5, 6th round WRs are lucky to make a roster filled with abysmal WRs yearly and are usually cut with little to no development or opportunity.

I agree the offense wasn't healthy I mean Smith and Forsett both were nearly game time decision due to injury. But if we're not going to label this a "bad team" then we can name them an average to below average team. I say this because typically average teams constantly have close games, and the final score often can dictate whether that team eventually shows their true colors. Teams that win half or over half of those close games can remain average improve to above average, but teams that lose over half of these games usually find ways to lose them and they fall into below average and bad.

Currently this team is 1-5 all games determine by less than 7 pts, that's below .500 in close games by wide margin, a margin typical of an Oakland or Cleveland.

* silver lining could be that we get a better draft pick to add some much needed talent and youth to this team. *

There's a good article on Grantland about this topic of close games etc. and The Ravens.

It would be nice for Ozzie to bring in a couple playmakers from this upcoming draft.  We need guys with speed and explosiveness, something the Steelers seem to really target in their wide receivers.  Their wideout coach deserves a ton of credit, but so does Roethlisberger, Haley and Arians.  Their two O-coordinators put those guys in positions to catch the ball in space and rely on their speed and vision to make plays.  Kubiak did it a little last year with TE screens, quick crossing routes and play action.  I have faith that Trestman will adjust his play calling accordingly, but it time to replace guys like Marlon Brown and Kamar Aiken with faster, explosive young guys who can create separation.

5 games... determined by 25 points total...  Yes, we are 1-5, but like others here, I don't think trading away the team is the answer...  for what???? immediate gratification???  I am more of a wait and see kind of person...  Get healthy, develop the youth, and make THIS team better.

Sorry but I was thinking about this again, (just we are not bad team part) and why I felt as I do.

I think it's because when I watch this current Ravens team play, they don't have that fight, that toughness, of former Ravens teams. Even watching teams from Billick era during a down a year it didn't matter if those teams were 3-7 or 6-2 they brought a certain level of intensity to field that made you feel like they can will, and will win regardless of how slim a chance they might have. And even if they weren't victorious they leave it all on field more often than not.

There is a very fine line between being Clutch as a team ( winning those close games at a higher rate ) and pretender ( a woulda/ shoulda/ coulda team if this happen or that happen then we'd have won ). If the team were at least 3-3 in these 6 close games then it would be understandable assessment.

But it's like we've relived that AFC divisional game over and over blowing leads. Losing a game we could win.

And they actually WERE close.  Yeah, IF...  that's huge.  Because a healthy Steve doesn't drop those passes.  Add 17 to that score... That might sound ridiculous to some people, but a healthy team actually pummels the 9ers.  We all need patience and TRUST in what we have instead of trying to sell the entire cow...  for one great steak.

Yeah those people don't have a clue. I mean not much value in anyone that's often talked about trading lol.

I would love to see young talent developed during an off year. But I mean the team signed Wright off of being cut and played him ahead Trey Walker, so if he's a better option than getting a rookie some game action in a terrible secondary then I'm just lost for words. I would love to see Buck Allen get 10-15+ carries a game the rest of the way so the teams gets an adequate look at him as well. Given LT injuries the team night end up drafting RB again in the mid rounds.

And well even in this scenario art brown is still left out in cold.

I liked C.J Mosley plenty coming into the draft and I thought it was a fine pick. As far as Perriman goes, coming into the league I think he’s better than Torrey when he was a rookie. I don’t see many similarities in either of them quite honestly. Perriman is bigger, stronger, physical and maybe even faster. I really wish Perriman was out there, we were getting heat with the pick we made and considering how poor these rookie WRs have been playing I feel we could be proving doubters wrong, similarly to how Kelvin Benjamin did it his rookie year. Who knows with Perriman maybe we wouldn’t have the record we have. It is what it is quite honestly. We need to focus heavily on the defense this offseason, they need help really badly. They also need some leadership, we’ll never find another Ray Lewis, guys like those come around once a decade but at last we can find talent and guys who’ll go out there and play with some heart.

There's a good shot Suggs was going to have a down year anyways. I told everybody the ravens are getting old and no true #1 WR. Does anybody think the ravens are fixing all these holes by next year?? Not to mention the money Biscotti is on the hook for. Not just Rice but all the underperformers Jimmy,Webb,Pitta,Monroe. Suggs will be going on 35,Dumervil will be 34. And that is just the big money contracts. Does anybody recall the other all pro guards after they hit 32-33?? Faneca,Allen,Hutchinson,Waters?? Everybody is counting on Perriman to be a #1 and has never shown #1 skills. Mosley and Jernigan took steps backwards without Ngata playing. Wagner has really struggled. Then there are the recognized holes corner,FS,WR,Center, The so called bright spots are pure optimism. The TEs are serviceable, not game breakers like everybody is making it sound like. Neither have game changing, speed or skills or another gear like the elite TEs that can take the place of a #1 WR option. But the Ozzie flock talks like Gilmore or Fat maxx are the next Gronk or Gates or even Todd Heap. I understand everybody thought this team was going to compete for the championship. But to actually believe every WR 6'3 or taller is going to be a #1 WR is nieve. Bad drafting and bad signings have caught up to the ravens. I do hope Mosley rebounds to a pro bowl LB and Jernigan rebounds.

And your Looking at things with "pure pessimism". 2 of our tight ends are rookies dude. One of them is 21 years old. They will take some time to develop, tight ends usually take longer than most positions. Edited by January J

Yup... let's go defense next year.

The problem isn't going defense. It is doing so with zero results.

I mean, omg, we went offense in the early rounds one year. The sky is falling. That isn't the reason our defense is garbage.

We gave the defense the first round pick in 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011 and 2010.

We gave the defense 7 of 9 of the top 3 picks in 2014, 2013, and 2012. The 2 picks we gave offense were not weapons btw either.

There is no excuse, not even injuries, for this defense to be out of the top 10 when you are giving them that much love year after year after year. So yeah, people were tired of seeing us focus only on defense in the draft and not seeing any results from that attention.

It is only my opinion, but with Pees here I don't see the point in focusing on defense.

Yeah, well that's been the only answer for some folks all along.
