The good, bad and ugly vent Browns at Ravens.

Boldin being gone was the FO's greed. They were only quibbling over a couple million dollars that they ended up wasting on scrubs like Huff, Spears, and Stokely.

The Pitta contract was absolutely stupid.

I'll only make one comment about Boldin in efforts to not derail the thread, but he would have been gone after the year anyways.  If we wanted to keep him beyond that season, we would have tried to lower his cap number via an extension rather than a straight pay cut.  It's all moot at this point because he'd be on another team now anyways.

Also a lot more expensive than Babin, to be fair.  Not exactly an apples to apples comparison.

Exactly the point! Downgrading because of a lack of funds and hoping to get by.

The stats tell the tale on the defense and on the lack of effectiveness with the WRs.

Those are the major themes, but what are we going to do about the penalties? Eisenberg's article brought this up and named 3 costly penalties, but there were many more. He didn't include the late hit that erased the pick and the illegal block that pushed us back 10 yards and likely cost us a FG.

It is bad enough to play poorly, but to compound the problem with undisciplined penalties? It is unforgivable. I just am not sure what Harbaugh needs to do to reign this in. Fines? Lost playing time? I don't know, but it is just maddening.

Not like we really had much of a choice.  We barely have enough to add some players in the event of injury for the rest of this season.

Oh man, I agree with this!! Bad spending for sure!

i dont think flacco played well today

I'm seeing a lot of criticism of Flacco today, and even ESPN's made-up stat gives him a bad grade for today.  I don't really understand what more you want from him?  He played pretty well.

He made some great audibles to big run plays and another for a deep connection with Aiken.

He made a lot of tough throws.  Some of those throws were pinpoint accurate, threading the needle between defenders, especially one to Nick Boyle.  In the 2nd half our receivers were not getting open on almost any plays, so the pass rush was getting through because of the coverage.  There were some throws where Flacco had to roll across to one side of the field and the only open receiver was on the opposite side of the field, and he either didn't attempt the throw or essentially had to throw it away.

What more do you ask of your QB?  I'm so sick of everybody expecting absolute 100% perfection on every play from Joe.  He's made a ton of plays this year, including this game, but the fact is he has to either swallow throws, throw it away, run for his life, or force things A LOT because he doesn't have a legit arsenal of weapons at his disposal.  This was the saddest arsenal of pass catching talent that was on the field in the NFL today, and it wasn't even close.  And yet we still made plays and scored 30 and had multiple late leads for the defense to squander.

Joe did more with less talent today than a lot of other QBs who won today, including Peyton, Dalton, Ryan, etc.  A defense is important.  Today was *ALL* about the defense.

No way this is true.

So bad it's unbelievable but it is.

3 receptions in the last 3 quarters and overtime, as posted by darklight.

Slowly turning into KC East, which is a damn shame considering we have a QB who can actually throw more than 5 yards.

Find the receptions yourself.

Between the passes to TEs and backs, and ones that fell incomplete, Joe's only completed pass to a WR was to Marlon with 11.43 left in the 4th quarter. The REALLY sad bit is that the one completion to a WR went for no gain.

WR first round. Treadwell or Boyd I don't care.

It a cumulative effect of bad luck and not so wise spending and cuts. The choices left have been dictated by previous moves that eventual caught up, along with some bad luck (if you believe in such).

A little of both.  Ngata, Rice, and Pitta are the culprits.  Ngata was probably the most correctable in not giving him that high of a cap number at his age, but he was also unwilling to accept our extension offers.  Rice is just pure unfortunate.  I never liked Pitta's contract coming off of that serious of an injury, but I don't think we expected it to happen again.

I know the cap is essentially a snapshot each year, but it'll be nice not having that much dead money tied to the cap next year.  I'd rather overpay players that are actually playing than to have cap tied up into guys that are no longer on the team.  I'd prefer neither, but if I had to pick one, have money tied up in guys that are actually here or able to play.

I agree today was on the defense and most of the times joe wins these games... im  just urked that its been 8 years now and he still doesnt know how to maneuver in the pocket and stop staring down his first read and throwing it no matter what the coverage... normally im ok with it its just people are oversensitive (me included) when these mistakes happen during key situations in the games.

We scored 30 points without a wide receiver on the field. Thirty. Three-zero. How did we lose with that kind of score line? C'mon, man. 30 points, no turnovers. It's hard to watch an offense that looks so under pressure that they play so tight and worried even with a double digit lead at home. They know that they need to score almost every time they have the ball or we lose. Even after we blew the big lead, we took it back, and then we blew it again. Unbelievable.

Perriman will come back (I know it doesn't feel like it atm) and I can guarantee we'll pick up a veteran who gets cut in the offseason. With Waller having a full season under his belt the situation won't be this dire next year.

Not that I'd be even remotely opposed to adding a WR during the first two days of the draft, mind.

Even when up 21-9 I knew we were vulnerable. I wish I wasn't right.

The offense is also hurting but somehow manages to be somewhat competent. To me the defense, with all their high draft picks, has no excuse.

Good post.

Now that I have you here, how many other teams have gone 0-2 when scoring more than 30 points (or any vaguely equivalent record)? I'd be fascinated to see one of your famous stats crunches on that issue.

I got a bad migraine and had to knock myself out. I  missed most of the second half. Last time I looked we were up 21-9. What the hell happened?

30 points arguably would have lost 5 of 14 games this week.

We were also outscored in the 2nd half despite scoring 16.  We let up 24 including overtime.

Will Hill lost his jersey buy when he let Bainridge butt catch that ball.  That's right, we were beaten by a Cleveland Butt Grab.

Remember when Joe said 10 wins would be a "disappointment"? 9-2 down the stretch would get us 10 wins. That's 4.5 wins per loss.  How many regular season 4 to 1 runs have we made since 2010? Wheres our hopeful stat men?

Lol....10 days to prepare for the Browns, and a home game. I saw a lot of talk about being 3-3 after lowly Cle & SF.

I said a few weeks ago the Browns aren't that bad. If it weren't for Tomlin thinking Mike Vick was 24 not 37, we'd be 0-5.

No. The Browns are bad. That was an embarrassment.

You know, to a great extent Harbaugh now has the players he wanted.

Harbaugh had no patience for veterans with the fire and a mind of their own. Now he's got a bunch of compliant, obedient coach honorees. And what have we got?  We have guys that allow butt grabs to win the game.  Guys that cut their hair and don't speak up in meetings.

Lets see us go 9-2 with them and make the playoffs!

The Ravens have never had a 5 game win streak under Harbaugh so there goes that.

Agreed. The Browns are bad. We're just worse.

SF is also bad. Whether we're worse than them too remains to be seen.

It's the financial situation that is the reason I, unfortunately, think the Ravens have little choice but to wait on the draft as opposed to giving away draft picks in the attempt to salvage this season and bring in a priced receiver. Heck, that type of move now only says letting Torrey slip away was a mistake and they want to cover now. Perriman looked like a good decision before his injury. Bad luck, or bad choices?

Perriman's not as good as Treadwell or Boyd, nor is he much of a #1 WR based in his college career. We need a true #1. Waller's nothing.

Yeah man, dude looked upset. Really pointed out in the off-season he doesn't want us to lose games in the 4th QTR and I'm sure he's had enough of it right now.

Not sure you want to rely on Waller for anything.
