Does Flacco trust his WRs to win 1 on 1 battles?

Aiken had a whopping 5 receptions against the Squeelers and now has 11 catches in 4 games. You may call that showing up. I don't but I hope you're right and I'm wrong about Aiken's ability. The TD pass he caught was a perfectly thrown ball that he nearly dropped in the end zone from the tape I watched. Its 1 on 1 battles with guys like Talib, Revis, Grimes and others that give me cause to doubt Aiken and Brown's ability to win those battles like Boldin and Smith do in every game. Its my understanding that Chris Givens has more catches in his NFL career than Aiken, Brown & Waller combined so let's not build them up into bona fide "weapons" just yet. Its premature but I can agree that Sunday will be a good test for them. Joe showed that he could win in a hostile environment despite not having any "weapons" against the Squeelers. That game was gift-wrapped though. We would have lost were it not for some pathetic play calling on the part of the Steelers' coaching staff. I'm glad we won because I would hate to have to admit that the Wizard's prediction of a 5-11 season could come true. Some fns might start believing The Wizard is a prophet. As it is, I think we will be 2-3 by Sunday night but it will be a struggle.

Our coaching staff made poor decisions too like the fake FG that could have altered the game as well. The what ifs don't really matter - we made enough plays to win the game and they didn't.

And I only said Aiken showed up against Pitt. He was invisible before that. But 5 catches, 70 yards and a TD is pretty respectable. Yes the TD was a perfect throw but he beat his man and made the catch. And the drive saving catch really set us up to win the game. That was clutch.

Sure it'll be more difficult with Aiken likely drawing top CBs now, but previously he and Brown had been getting open pretty regularly but joe rarely looked beyond SSS and opted to force a throw into him rather than go through his progressions and find the open man.

SSS will likely be back next week so we just need them to step up this week against the Browns. Haden may even be out. Either way we have enough to get the job done until Sr returns.

I don't expect Aiken or Brown to light the world on fire but if they can each make the plays that are there for them and make 3-5 catches, extend some drives and be a threat in the red zone we'll be fine.

I expect Givens to be a threat immediately. He'll get his share of targets and hopefully can make a play deep early to open the field up a bit.

If Joe wants to get to the post season then I think he pretty much has to trust them.  Even if SSS comes back healthy, he's only going to be able to carry the WR load for so long.  Joe needs to develop these guys now and yes I know Marlon and Kamar have been with the team awhile now, but they still need to be targeted more to get comfortable.  This might be the perfect game for that.  I want to think that Joe will spread the ball a bit more this game.  I would also like to see Buck Allen get more playing time and maybe break out some high yardage plays as well as Waller.  Looking forward to Sunday.

He will trust them and he'll throw those balls up to give them a chance to make a play. Problem is, when they fail to do so, everyone will be in here blaming Flacco for it.

IMO they need to step up and prove worthy of any trust.

It's a phrase. My apologies - re watch the digitally mastered game footage.

Not quite the same ring to it.

No. It really doesn't.

My bad.

Have to agree 100%. I think Trestman's ability to manufacture a passing game gets overlooked with fans. The WCO is really tied to timing and reads more then any other offense IMO and if your first read is open why go else where? Trestman does a really good job of scheming his #1WR and TE open. Both Aiken and Brown have really been victims of just lack of targets really. Even a guy like Roddy White is upset in ATL because he's often the 3rd or 4th option in that offense. If Julio is open why target White? So that's a big part of it with this offense. The #2 WR has to force his way into the offense once teams start overplaying the #1 WR and the #WR is almost just a place holder in this offense.

yeah i really dont think it has much to do with trust at all but more to do with going to the reads and not force stuff.

forcing passes just because you trust the guy will lead to turnovers as we have seen this season already lol

Yea, it's just a matter of these guys playing together and getting comfortable with each other and the offense. The Ravens need to put a no interview clause in Trestman's contract. It's cool that Flacco can adapt and adjust to new OCs each year but at some point you must allow this offense to grow together. It's easier to just add pieces once

unless the offense picks up the pace and start scoring more and such , you wont have to be afraid for trestman to go.

kubiak you could pretty much predict he would go if the broncos ever got open and well we all knew caldwell never was going to be the long term play caller.

he had little experience doing that in the NFL and he does not even have an own playbook.

Well, what happened? Our WRs were invisible in the 2nd half. I see nothing about Marlon Brown to make me think he's going to step up. You can read confidence or the lack of it in a person's eyes. With Kamar Aiken, there's at least some hope that he will develop into a reliable WR. Waller also appears to be a keeper. I guess Givens wasn't targeted more because he's still learning the offense. With all that being said, the offense scored thirty points in regulation and we still couldn't win, despite the valiant effort from Joe and Justin Forsett.

Hallelujah & PTL! For once, I am in total agreement with you. Trust isn't owed to anyone; its earned. As the old adage goes, "as you play in practice, so too will you play in games." The WRs have to earn Joe's trust by demonstrating their ability to get separation, contest jump balls (like the Brownies' TD catch late in the game), and to lay out for a pass rather than just going through the motions. In our WRs' defense, they are going up against terrible defenders in practice who probably make them think they are better than they are when they play against top-notch defenders, e.g., Joe Haden. Joe's doing his part to target a lot of different receivers but the WRs still aren't getting separation. I saw Joe overthrow one long pass today and he threw one bad short pass. Other than that, he was on target. He just doesn't have a lot of choices and that's why Juice and Justin caught more passes than most of our WRs.
