Ravens scheme switch?

8 posts in this topic

In the early years, the Ravens ran a dominant 4-3 defense with Ray Lewis patrolling the middle with Sam Adams and Goose eating offensive linemen. If it is doom and gloom like some folks predict and some of the older pieces in the 3-4 (Suggs) aging, why not consider switching back to the 4-3?

you need good lbers to do that.

we only have mosley and smith who could fit a 4-3 and probably brown as well.

you need depth behind those and we dont have it.

I think we have the starters to be better in a 4-3 than in a 3-4. We don't have the LB depth for it though.

We'd have Daryl, Mosley, and Brown at backer, and they are all prototype 4-3 backers. All of them fit in. At defensive end, we'd have Courtney Upshaw, Dumervil, Zadarius, and Babin. Of that group, everyone has already played 4-3 DE but Upshaw, but he's certainly strong enough for the role. At defensive tackle, we'd probably start Tim Jernigan, the prototype 3 tech, and Brandon Williams, who is wasted in a 3-4 and would be even better as a 4-3 1 tech. Carl Davis, Canty, and KLM could all do it, too.

In my not so humble opinion, all of our starters would be better in a 4-3 base.

It is Pees' defense; bend but don't break......giving our opponent to score so much yardage in the air that in hope eventually they will get tired of running in free lanes.....

I think it could be practical, it would probably fit Jernigan better. As far as LBs I say just keep upshaw at LB instead of DE and run an under 4-3 D where upshaw would stay on the LOS and he could keep doing what he does best which is set the edge.

I don't think there'd be any difference. You'd still be only rushing four with LBs playing underneath coverage most of the time. That's pretty much exactly what we're currently doing.
