[News] Late For Work 10/6: Will Ravens Try To Talk Steve Smith Out Of Retirement?

59 posts in this topic

If things don't pan out this season maybe SSS can be convinced that a "do over" season with players like Perriman and Suggs back from injury and another first round draftee in the mix will give him a better last shot at a ring.

I'm glad Ross is here and I hate to be negative but looking at Ross's receiving stats he fumbles once every six times he touches the ball. That won't fly with Harbaugh. Might as well let Asa have another shot.

As great as it sounds to have Steve back I don't think it'll work out. He took a long time to make the decision to retire and that's what his heart is telling him. It just never works out for anyone when they go against original plans. I still love to see him come back.

Agreed 100 %. Haven't heard it as a reason or excuse yet but as good as the young ones are on our front 7, we do miss Ngata. Teams do not fear running against us without Suggs or Ngata, but in a very short time, they will realize that we have one of the best D-lines for years (Hopefully) to come.

Did you see Ngata play last night?  He got very little penetration, Wilson ran out the right side and when Ngata went to chase him it didn't even look like the Ngata we are used to seeing.  He looked like he was 80.  He had one tackle.  I think Ozzie made a very wise move and since I have GamePass and can watch the games, the games I have seen Ngata play in, he doesn't look like anything close to the beast he was in Baltimore.  I love Ngata and what he did for us, but looks like he was into the RF chicken a little too much here recently.

last year it was Corners, this year it is WR......let's hope this ends here. I remember when injuries happened, but much rarer than todays game. I wonder what is the biggest factor, bigger stronger players? Rule changes? or something else? I think if injuries are going to stay at a much higher level then the league should expand the rosters from 53 to 60-65 to allow a greater rotation of personnel, and hopefully fresher players equals less injuries. Or somehow better equipment research to provide better gear. GO RAVENS!

Every player that leaves us looks like that! lol. Different schemes, coaches, and chemistry. There is no place like B-more. We play like Ravens.

Well I didnt get my wish. No new WR aquired come Oz.

However Gillmore is correct, week 6 activate Pitta. Dude wants to play, throw him in the slot.. We need as many weapons as humanly possible.

And yes they should try to get Sr to comeback next year

I did read that expanding the roster is a go for 2016 season. They just haven't worked it out yet. Mcjacket would know better than I tho.

just by the way Crockett plays you can tell he listens and emulates the way SSS plays. Wish the other WRs would do that.

let sss retire. this organization needs to figure out how to develop receivers but until they do we need to trade for better ones.

The teams that go nuts trying to acquire big name missing pieces through free agency and trades always end up in the places Miami and SF are now. Both those teams threw tons of money at guys with no results. As frustrating as it is to not have a Torry Smith on the team the answer is not to throw $10 million and a draft pick at a guy and then be frustrated that he's not all that. The answer is more often to get $3 million of value out of a few discarded sub- $1 million type guys. So don't expect a big splash trade. Or even wish for it. Expect another journeyman trade for an undervalued guy. Undervalued is the key. Someone we'll probably have to google when the deal is announced. It's why Ozzie is regarded as good at his job and the guys running Miami, Cleveland, SF, Tampa, Chicago, right now really aren't. It's not that players aren't good once they leave Baltimore. It's that they were given crazy pay for past performance at the peak of their careers while being helped along by other guys to succeed. Torry Smith is only a $10million player with a handful of QBs throwing to him. Some of our pass rushers over the years were stars here because teams were double covering Suggs and Doom, and really didn't merit their salaries once they were expected to look the same on their own. If Ozzie won't pay it there's a good chance there's just not enough longterm value there. Better to save the money and use it to lock down Tucker, Yanda and/or KO, IMHO. I'd rather struggle through the year with a WR corps of no names and a heavy dose of TE/FB/RB short yardage grind out games than give away the farm for a short term rental that isn't cap friendly and means we have to cut loose other pieces next year.

Just out of curiosity... who is the big money FA signing the 49ers made? Torrey? Who else?

Torrey isn't a big money FA signing. Suh is a big money FA signing.

Steve deserves a ring. He had the bad luck of being with the Panthers for a long unfortunate career, besides that one year they got to the Super Bowl

Torrey Smith & Boldin are both good bro. San fran is going through a change at head coach with a guy who really had no prior football experience, and a QB (Kapernick) that is not performing well.

I never believed for a minute that Smith would retire. Players say this crap all the time, retire, unretire, so who knows? Pitta is done. At least he should be. The next hip failure may put him in a wheelchair for life. Not worth the risk. Joe cannot, I repeat, CANNOT, carry the team. He is too inconsistent and makes too many dumb decisions. He is great one minute and gawd awful the next. We have ONE "elite" player and his name is Tucker.

All right Flacco. Let's see what you got. Let's see how tough you really are without your key wide receivers and i'm sure we will see that in the weeks to come.

I have a feeling Flacco is going to step up. It's the receivers, that I'm worried about. They did just enough last week in Pitt. They need to do more. Usually we run well against Cleve. We'll need to do that this week to win, as well. Cleveland can surprise us, they bring their 'A' game to Baltimore!

cleveland will take the run away and challenge the passing game to beat them. receivers and te's will have to make them pay dearly

you will not post a pic of that t shirt and not provide details on where/how to acquire. that's just wrong.

“[H]e will need to carry the offense,” wrote The Baltimore Sun’s Jeff Zrebiec. “It’s obvious that the Ravens are lacking playmakers and that’s not Flacco’s fault. But the game’s top quarterbacks raise the level of the personnel around them and the Ravens need Flacco to do that, now more than ever.”

false. This is crap. I cant wait until people stop pretending that any of the 5 or 6 guys youre thinking of when you say "the game's top QBs," has EVER worked with a unit this bad.

Do we need better position coaches for the wide receivers ?

It seams like we aren't able to develop our drafted WRs into premium #1's.

The best ones we get are at the end's of their careers.

I have no worries that Joe will do his best to get the most out of the receivers that he has. He will be spending more time with them this week to refine timing and route running. The only thing that he can not teach them is how to work around being held up at the line and not getting separation. That is the work for the receivers coach and maybe Smith Sr. can continue to tutor them. The main thing as Joe has said is these receivers need confidence.

I would love to see Joe take this team and just carry it. This is the perfect opportunity since he has success against Cleveland traditionally.

I would be surprised to see SS89 on the team next year, since he seemed pretty adamant about this being his last. This situation kind of reminds me of Tony Gonzalez, who was performing at a high level in his "final" season before being convinced to come back for another.

The Ravens need to move on from Smith. He is a warrior, but his time is about up as a productive player.

pretty sure your in the minority there buddy.
