Confirmed: Steve Smith has a back injury

109 posts in this topic

This doesn't look good, but I'm surprised Steve wasn't in more pain on the sidelines. 4 rib fractures will make it incredibly painful to breathe and often-times cause acute dyspnea (shortness of breath). Since he didn't, I'm guessing it's the top ribs that were involved.. In any case, this takes normal people about 5 weeks to heal. Steve? Probably 1.

Per team source Ravens WR Steve Smith Sr. has 4 broken bones in his back. They will put him in wait & see mode (day 2 day) #ravenstalk cont

I hope this is more rumor than fact. This could be the real reason why Chris Givens was brought in although I don't pretend to think he's anywhere as good as Senior.

Steve Smith put our team on his back and now its broken.

And on the same day that we send Michael Campanero to season ending IR too...

At this point I'd say we won't see Perriman until atleast WK 10-12 after our bye week. Still holding out hope that Dennis Pitta could come in and contribute at some point this year as well.

And all the little injuries in between too..Monroes concussion, Gilmore's calf, etc... Hot Damn we must be cursed

I'm not usually one to step in on these types of debates, but I don't see how you can't.  I'm pretty sure almost everyone knew counting on Aiken and Brown to play large roles was a bad idea.  Even with Perriman, there was a severe lack of any semblance of a proven option outside of Steve Smith.  Like CB when we decided to roll with Chykie and Asa as the #3/4, I think most of us correctly predicted this.  You can't predict injuries, but you have to be prepared in case they happen, and this was a case of us not being prepared.

I understand that  part but Jimmy said once again the receiver position is set up with no  depth. I don't understand or understand what other year where we didn't have solid wide receiver depth. Last year we had Torrey Smith, Steve Smith, Jacoby Jones, Marlon Brown, Kamar Aiken, and  Micheal Campanaro. How was that  bad wide receiver depth?

article was already deleted. keeping my fingers crossed...

Wow ... OK ... I'll take out my post containing the link (as well as any responses to it). I've no idea why this would have been posted then pulled. Sheesh.

Ian Rappoport is saying 4 broken ribs...

It wont require surgery either, still sounds painful, but its much more of a relief than a broken vertibrae or back.

Who knows where that info came from ... maybe from our organization? ... but then we pulled the article that reported it was his ribs. No idea what to believe.

I guess we wait for our team to release something official ... which may or may not ever come.

Title of this thread is irresponsible. I'd rather have the usual coach speak "no comment" than all this misinformation. What is real the diagnosis?

Surprised no one has started a thread about Campanero going to IR too...I see a lot of Tavon Austin-Esque playmaking abilities from him, its a shame he can't stay healthy.

Big loss IMO

I hate to say it but I'm kinda excited about Ozzie possibly having a good draft position again this year as well as some actual money to work with in FA. If we can shake the injury bug we're going to be STACKED in 2016. Maybe we can even get Steve Smith to play one more year if this season if this one ends on a sour note, he's too competitive to go out like this.

I don't see much different here than the one that was taken down, except that the first said he had 4 broken ribs and this one says he has four broken bones in his "back or ribs". They also state it will not require surgery and that he is week to week.

I hope he doesn't draft a Bust or trade down for some day 3 picks.

It's time to draft our next HoFer.

If this news is true.  It would really test Joe to see what he can do.   I wouldn't give Flacco a 'pass' for a bad season.   But I definately do not want see our team go 4-12.

Waited too long for this season just to dump it off like this.   Something very special can happen if our offense can find a way to revive this team.

lol Defense got a "pass" for injuries. But Joe's only offensive weapons (literally) go down and you wouldn't give him a "pass". This place is so very very hypicritcal.

Get better Steve. Don't do anything rash. Broken bones in your back are no joke.

I think he dons a flack jacket and plays...  That's how tough Steve is....  unless the back contusion is out there too and that sidelines him.  Here we go again with the speculation and guessing games.

We need to win against Cleveland obviously, but do you guys think it would be Smartt to sit SSR just to give him a break. Last thing we need is him to push it and get hurt even more.

I understand if you don't know human anatomy. The human ribcage extends from the spine and covers the chest. This means your ribs are also located on your "back." He didn't get hit on his spine, which is where vertebrae are located.

Ok Doctor Kildaire when they say back they ain't talking about ribs bro

I understand, but there were conflicting reports regarding his actual injury.

It certainly could mean ribs, because if you have a broken rib that's proximal to the spine, then yes, that's a broken rib but it's more towards his back.

The very nature of this injury is shrouded in ambiguity, so it doesn't look like we'll learn much here.

as the first lady of the fire pees brigade i find it quite hilarious that you are talking about the defense getting a pass lol.

at least you are right on the hypercritical part though.

And you are wrong. I gave them a pass for last season, conceded on the injury thing. Better go re-read those threads.

Just didn't give him a pass on the rest of it and said I didn't want to see new excuses this season when it was all the same. But of course, that's what we're seeing.

It doesn't look good. I heard what he experienced is really painful and Steve Smith has a very high pain tolerance, if he couldn't get back on the field than that doesn't sound like good news to say the least.

If he has 4 broken bones in his back and he was jogging around, he must have one of the highest pain tolerances on the planet for a human being.

Dude is purely tough, I wish our other WRs would follow by example. Hes been carrying this offense on his back.

Confirmed back injury? Or ribs injury?

I guess there is just not a whole lot of clarity on the exact injury prognosis. Only thing we know is 4 broken bones.

The Ravens issued a statement saying it is a back injury. Could be ribs in the back. Who knows, but they confirmed a back injury.

I will assume the injury is to the ribs that wrap around to the back.
