United Airlines

I'm going to America and on the way home I have a flight with United from tampa ti chicago before flying home to the UK.

They point blank cancelled the flight and never notified me. I now have to book a flight 7 hrs earlier with them and hang around chicago for 9 hrs until my connecting flight.

Is this a normal experience? They at least didn't charge any extra but it's such a hassle now.

Anything to do in Chicago when im there for 9 hrs?

Chicago is actually a pretty good place to visit, especially if you like to eat meat. Since it was historically a huge cattle processing point, beef rules. Downtown is worth the trip.

Yeah Chicago is pretty cool, don't underestimate O'Hare as that airport is huge so you want to make sure you have plenty of time but you should be able to see downtown for a bit.

Haven't flown United at all recently so can't really comment on them. Mainly been flying Southwest but they don't go to Europe so there is that.

There's a restaurant in Chicago where the staff is paid to insult you during the whole experience.

We get enough of that here. My favorite in Chicago is Lawry's.

It's a nice place to visit,  but if you are in the airport it would be a pain to leave the airport and then come back.  Especially on an international flight.

Can't remember the places name.  I read about and went to a hot dog place where you are supposed to be rude to the waitress and vice versa.  Its an incredible experience.  Too bad it's not Pittsburg, becaiuse having Ravens and Steelers fans in the same place would be an insulting experience to say the least.

I've never been insulted at Lawry's Prime Rib, not even in the Beverly Hills one. LOL!

Arnie, just do a search for Lawry's Prime Rib Chicago if you're interested. There are plenty of other excellent restaurants, too, many closer to the airport. OR, you can just hang out at O'Hare for the time. It's a HUGE place.

Should have asked, though, if you're going through O'Hare. I usually go through Midway but have connected through O'Hare a few times.

I was just in Chicago for business.  If the 9 hour includes checking back in, etc than it would be tight to get downtown and back.  If its 9 hours outside of check in etc. Then you could make it downtown for a bit.

You could go down to Navy Pier and Michigan Avenue.  Eat some deep dish pizza and Italian Beef sandwiches.

I am pretty certain you are thinking of "Ed Debevic's".  There are a whole lot of old-time restaurants (lots of Italian Beef & Hot Dog places) around where Ed Debevics is.  My parents use to go on dates in that area when they were in High School.

Not too far off Michigan Avenue.

Well United doesn't fly to Midway and there are no transatlantic flights from Midway either so there is that :P

Guess that answers the question. :-)

Yeah Midway is a pretty small airport, basically the entire airport is one square mile. It is used quite a bit by Southwest as they like the smaller airports like that in big cities(kinda like Dallas Love Field and Houston Hobby), especially since they don't fly to O'Hare. Pretty remarkable just how much traffic they are able to fit through that airport, never been there but I am sure it is pretty busy. Fits Southwest well as they fly only in the U.S. and just a couple years ago started flying to the Caribbean and Latin America after merging with Air Tran so they don't have to go too far. But while Midway suits Southwest well, it is not the type of airport you want the big wide body planes to be going through as it is just too small, that is why they have O'Hare.
