[News] Cornerback Jimmy Smith's Confidence Not Shaken After Bengals

56 posts in this topic

Hindsight is 20/20; McPhee has 16 tackles and two sacks. Possibly a FO miss to prioritize signing an injured, possibly questionable J Smith over P McPhee.

He sacked Jimmy Clausen twice. not that hard to do, the bears are awful, relax.

plus, our d line is crowded, he still wouldnt be doing anything but rotating anyway.

Defense never pointed their finger at the Offense in the past so people really need to check themselves pointing their Lil fingers at the Defense rite now! They will get it together Offense needs to score some points! Should have beat denver but two INTs prevented that the raiders won because of fatigue the bungles own us now that's it but the Ravens gotta score points under a new system and it's taking some time! All this "SNIVELING" is something else and now people question Jimmy Smith now?! SMH

so 24 points is not enough? what about the 33 against OAK? we gave up 28 and 37 the last two weeks how can we blame anyone but the defense

all 4 phases of this team need improvement the 4th being the coaching staff

Agreed, Greek.  Let's put the coaches at the top of that list.  Get better or get gone, both OC and DC. You can even see the frustration on Harbs face with both of those guys in certain situations.  At the end of the day, falls on Harbs to get those jokers in line.

With Suggs and Dumervil we were able to generate pressure with only 4 guys rushing. We no longer can do that so to keep from allowing the QB 10 to 15 seconds to pick out a receiver, which will get open in that time frame, Pees has to blitz. When Jimmy and Kendrick Lewis got beat, they were man on man with one of the best WR in the league. There is a thin line to walk between generating sufficient pressure and keeping enough guys back to give help. With having Webb and Smith out last year, Hill served an 8 game suspension and Kendrick Lewis is new. These guys are still learning each other. Just like the offense is coming around, I expect our defense to come around as well and we have always been a late season team that is thriving when we hit the playoffs (which is why we always win at least one game). Though I may believe our receivers (except SSS)are not ready for prime time yet I think our D backs still need some time to work out communications, coverage and pass rush issues.

We have 7 sacks on the season.  We can pressure.  We need to have better play/scheme in the secondary.  That will prevent the quick pass and make the QB look to his second or third read and then...BOOM.  Everything has to work in concert.

Throughout training camp we heard of the receiver 'competition' and the conrnerback 'competition' as if we almost had too much talent to choose who to keep and who to let go. Obviously our conerbacks and receivers are so bad, that they actually make each other look good in practice, and that has fooled the raven's coaches and player personnel into thinking that meant that they were talented. When clearly, SSS is the only remotely talented receiver we have, and Jimmy Smith is the only capable corner we have (im hoping his off season surgery is lingering and not his skills diminishing). The rest of them are a bunch of nobodys or has-beens and scheming only does so much. This is a front office problem that unfortunately is too late to fix (as if replacing defensive coordinators is even an option). Who are we going to bring in, a new coordinator to teach a whole new defense mid season? Monachino? what proof does anybody have that our in house replacements will be any better? Little bit scheme, mostly personnel and execution. no excuse for a confusion about man or zone coverage in two minute at the end of the game. Thats on the players

Looked to me like the safeties weren't doing their job.

There were safeties back there?  Hmmmm, I couldn't tell.

I'm gonna write the FO and see if I can suit up for a game, I can go out there, let receivers run right by me and get beat with the best of them!!!

The whole Raven defense learned to spell H-i-l-l. Too bad they couldn't recognize him till he went by..........................bye.

Pees and the secondary coach are much to blame as these guys were out of position the ENTIRE game. Give a guy some help after he continues to get beat.

I think it may be taking Jimmy a little while to get back to his old form after the injury. Remember, he spent most of the offseason rehabbing, so it may have been unrealistic to expect him to come in and pick up from where he left off last year. Fans are seriously overreacting though. He made plays to help us win the SB in 2012, he had a very good 2013 season, and he was a shut down corner for 8 games last year before getting hurt. I don't think he suddenly forgot how to be a great corner because of a couple bad games.

heh, might as well have.

call that early senility. i meant wilson, and the point remains. Seahawks o line isnt that impressive and Wilson is always loking to get out the pocket anyway, makes him easier to get to as long as you're disciplined, and we all know he's a good rusher.

up until two days ago though, he had been a disappointment for them thus far.

Don't want to come off all negative but Smith is not an elite CB. He's not. Besides his perpetual health issues, what he showed me on Sunday was a kid who gave up! That's very disappointing for me as a fan. That's not intensity. That's not fire in your belly. That's most certainly NOT playing like a Raven...

i seriously cannot believe that someone on here said that we should stop calling out the defense, they are doing their job, and that the offense is to blame for not putting up points. They must think this is a basketball game or something. Or maybe dont even watch and understand football. must be a troll because from what i see, and i think that most the real fans here would say the contrary. The offense, while dismal in the first half, set a bad trend for the defense, did in fact rally this entire team back into contention and put us in a position (twice i might add) to win this game. just seems like every time the offense answers to provide a lead...the def blows it with a huge play or lack thereof. It sickens me that we are seeing this kind of output because we just arent used to seeing this. I feel for the guys on the team and the guilt they must have right now. But in the end, that is what will make them better as individuals and as a team. wouldnt it be great to see them find a way to make it happen. Look at NE. Honestly a team full of no names (except Gronk and Brady) and they are playing like they are chock full of probowlers. We need to find a deep threat to open the playbook like now. Why not throw Waller in there and give him a chance? why are we full of possession wrs? Smith Sr will dry up or be injured by midseason at this pace. the deep threat lacking has already destroyed our running game and playaction and 3rd and Long will be this seasons mantra if we dont get someone out there.

Not quite true, CJ's fumble recovery for a TD provided us with the 1st lead of the game.

J Smith ain't elite, nor is J Flacco elite. If Flacco was elite, then he would've been able to pull us from behind to win one or two of these past games. Otherwise, Flacco is elite but not with the funny cast he has with WRs.

Why does Ozzie continue to think that he can find "value" with free agency or draft (typically drafting third round or after) for corners and receivers???

Time to stop drafting lineman and linebackers in the first round and the Bama players thereafter...

Just finished watching the 1st Qtr of the coache's film on NFL Game Pass of the Ravens/Bengals game. I'll start with the positive, since I've been so negative these last few days.

--Brandon Williams is a BEAST. One on one he drives his man into the backfield. Two on one he handles the double team very well. There were at least one or two running plays were he handled a double team and either still made the tackle or impact the run in a negative way.

Ok it's all down hill from here on out with this post.

Defensive notes: Melvin can and does play press coverage. The problem is he stinks at it. His penalty in the red zone (holding) was because he pressed Jones but was manhandled wound of falling to the ground and the process of that grabbed Jones' jersey; hence the call That's not the only time he lost his feet. He bit hard on a pump fake from Dalton fall down and Dalton hit Jones down the side line for a big game. The problem there was that Melvin had Lewis covering underneath. When Dalton pumped fake Jones was even looking back for the ball and had Dalton thrown it Lewis would have had an INT. There was no reason to bite at all.

Jimmy Smith does not play press coverage although he lines up as if he will. He gives his man a free release off the line every time. Never does he attempt to jam his guy at all.

Kendrick Lewis is not a cover safety. No way, no how. Those of you out there calling for a change in safety. The tape says you are justified.

Mosley is the reason Dalton scored the Bengals first TD. He juked Mosley right out of his shoes. It was one on one and Mosley flat out loss--horrible.

Offense: It has one big problem-- the line. Wagner is terrible on run blocking and Zuttah could handle his on either on run blocking on pass protection. With Wagner on a running play with a zone blocking scheme, he ran into the back of the defender he was suppose to block then fell down. Foresett was tackled for a loss. On another running play normal blocking scheme he just got beat and the RB was tackled for a loss.

Flacco and the WRs: there could be a lot going on here some of it could be patience on Joe's part another could be play calling by Trestman. On one play the pocket collapsed on Joe, but he could have stepped up into and made a throw that would have resulted in a 1st down instead he dumped the ball off. On another, the 1st play on offense after the Bengals TD. Akin and Smith were both open for big gains, but Joe dumped the ball off into the flat even though he had great protection and no one was near him. Looking at the play Joe was ready to throw the ball wayyyy sooner than the WRs began to make their breaks. But there was another issue with the play Akin and Smith were in the same area. I'm really close bring to each other bring with them 3 defenders. Two on Smith and one on Akin. Eventually they cleared away from one another, but by that time Joe had dumped the ball off.

Hopefully it's just a bad couple games. Jimmy has locked-down elite WRs in the past (AB, Green, BMarsh). I mean, every CB is going to give up receptions and first downs in Pees' system, but you can't allow your guy to get by you.

Giving a guy who continues to get beat is a serious problem because when our OL was getting beat in Denver they just continued to let it happen.  Maybe they don't see what we all see...not sure how that's possible but who knows.  All i know is if they do what they've been doing in Pitt we will be 0-4

it's funny how everyone wants to blame Pees, state that Smith is not a shut down corner, etc. It's 3 games! Yes, we are 0-3, but we still can turn this season around and win the next 4 games against the Steelers, Browns, 49ers and Cardinals. This season is far from over! Flacco has been playing great (besides his first game). We need to adjust our defense to jam WR's at the line of scrimmage, that's for sure! Let's see what Breshard Perriman can bring when he suits up to play (if he ever does!)

It's almost impossible to criticize Smith because with 2 interceptions he is off to a hell of a start this year. But he is also getting burned at times. Burned bad.
