[News] Ravens Racking Up Too Many Penalties

37 posts in this topic

Half the Penalties were BS! I turned the game off at half time be ause NOBODY watches NFL football to watch refs throw yellow tisdues 20x a game. I know the NFL is wrapped up in gambling with Fanduel, and DraftKings and wants every game 45-44, but there needs to be a meeting in NYC to curtail Penalty calls by 50%. "LET THE PLAYERS DECIDE GAMES"

Its like there only allowing certain cities to play defense now and be physical, Seattle, Buffalo, Denver, but everyone else if you sneeze on a offensive player its a flag...even trafitional defensive powerhouse franchises like the Ravens or Steelers.

Then AJ Green got away with a clear push off on Jimmy Smith and NO CALL! So its not even called 50/50 down the middle. Cant watch football when the FIX is in for the Offense

I have been trying to do everything I can to help the Ravens win. The first game I watched all on TV. No good. So the second game I listened to the whole thing on the radio. Well, that didn't work either. So Sunday I only followed the game on the internet. No luck. Well, I'm sorry Ravens fans, because I know whatever I DO, determines whether they win or not! This Thursday, I will go to bed and pretend they're not even playing. So, if they lose this week, some other fan is doing something wrong, not me!

I don't believe there's a "fix" in play, I just think that not all the refs are on the same page. The flags had an impact but that's not what lost us the game. This wasn't decided by the refs, it was decided by the poor study, poor play and poor coaching. The flags were a result of those 3 things.

We better right this ship asap and I don't want to see any more additions to our roster, play who we have and beat that horse till it drops. Shake that roster tree and see who falls out.

When the players and coaches get tired of losing, maybe they'll get back to playing like Ravens.

Too Funny @20306cab!

I know exactly how you feel! Been doing similar things myself. Gonna watch this one in West Virginia with some friends. Tough to do on a short week when I have to work on Friday so it would be nice if our team would take that into consideration and maybe study a little and maybe put a couple extra reps in the weight room or something. It would sure be appreciated!

Yes, it seems no matter what game you watch every play or every other play one of the zebras is throwing a flag. The NFL needs to take a long look at how the calls are taking away good hard nose football. It's a contact sport. Take some lessons from real "football" (most people call it soccer). If a fouls occurs that doesn't impact the play the teams play on. How many times is there a penalty called on the left side of the field when the play has gone to the right. Just pick up the flag. Another thing the refs need to do it to set a standard and call it the same way throughout the game. We want to watch football, not the flight of the yellow hankie w/golf ball.

This doesnt bode well for Harbaugh. This is a clear indication of an undisciplined team. It is also a sign of mutiny or the players dont respect the coaches, (the lackluster effort except for SSS), its all across the board.

I'll keep saying it over and over all of his player coaches are all gone now, Suggs, Lewis, Reed, and Ngata and John can't do it he has become player friendly coach like Billick. John doesn't have the expertise in offense or defense to do either job he is totally dependent on his staff. I think this is the beginning of the end for coach H.

Once yet again, an article seemingly written by an eighth grader. Sorry if that offends some eighth graders. Learn to proofread your articles, Three Musketeers.

It's technique issues and trying to do too much... because they cannot hold receivers doing it the legal way. The limitations of their skills are evident.

And Osemele's "it happens. things happen in life" response does not show any accountability on his part. Just hearing these quotes only show the lack of leadership on this team (besides SSS)

Penalties, for the most part indicate that you are getting beat. With many new pieces and many young players (on pee-fense)- along with three major veterans gone from last year, you may be only so good- or not.

The penalties are a killer. Two weeks in a row. Winnable games go up in smoke. Harbs can be angry all he wants... I saw the press conference after that game... you could tell that he was mad. But there were hiccups and poor play all round. We don't seem to have any other running plays except straight ahead, and usually into the teeth of the defense; does nobody else get open except Steve Smith Sr? Doesn't the secondary like to cover or tackle? Where did the pass rush go? Harbs has to be holding Dean Pees and Marc Trestman's feet to the fire, while he's taking his own shoes off. We have not played any games so far that were not winnable. None.

Coaches need to get this under control. Stupid penalties are a direct reflection of the lack of preparation, focus and discipline. Run Em at Practice, FINE Them for personal fouls whatever it takes to get the players dialed in. With that being said, the REFS are horribly inconsistent this year, but they're not gonna get better so we have to be more disciplined and have better technique.

I think he's going to start benching players that are penalty-happy and costing us yards and wins in the process. If we only have 6 players to field on defense, so be it. Like someone said here, yesterday, 'If we didn't field a defense, it prob. would have taken the Bengals LONGER to score than with that help from us!' And I thought that was funny and poignant to our situation.

casprintman - That is the reality of it, but it is kind of bananas that he's out for the whole year. I don't think any other team in the league is as snake-bitten when it comes to us drafting WR's. I mean look at Tampa Bay, they drafted some good receivers (Mike Evans, I think) and other teams have gotten quality WR's. Heck, Pittsburgh is a WR Factory. They can't miss when it comes to those WR's. They could draft randomly and they'd get a bonafide Number 1 Receiver. Thankfully we got SSS, but he's only giving us 2 years, due to retiring, so I mean we got lucky to get him at all, but as he's leaving the game.

It's called being tired and not in shape and you start leaning beacuse your gassed, and your start taking short cuts. Coach Harbs said it best improper technique.

It's as though the Ravens didn't even have a 1st round draft pick this year. Just put this guy on IR already and sign somebody else.

100% correct

Also Ozzy gets rid of any good receiver we have.. Boldin

OMG, I swear the times I actually get to see a Ravens game out here in Texas it seems that's when they have the worst games.  So, like you, I've taken similar strategy over the past three weeks.  The first game was broadcasted and I watched it in entirety.  They lost.  Yesterday, the Ravens game wasn't supposed to be on out here so I said maybe they'd win and I'd just get updates on the game/score as it flashed on the bottom of the screen every now and then.  Except when the Steelers-Rams game got postponed what did CBS do?  They switched to the Ravens-Bengals game right at the point where Ravens defensive penalties constantly extended the Bengals first scoring drive, which (btw) was capped-off with the usually excellent C.J. Mosley missing a tackle on Red for a rushing QB score...  I immediately turned the TV off after that.  LOL

Maybe I was that other fan jinxing the team?  Or could the loses and excessive penalties just be a result of bad coaching?  Yeah, I think that's a more likely reality.

Penalties will derail anything good, I understand that things happen but do we want to go to the playoffs or not because penalties can have a devastating effect on that, especially when you're driving for a win and you're hit with a 15 yard penalty, it could stop that whole scenario, I'm just saying!!! I'm not looking for perfection, just a cut down on penalties, but be aware of what's happening around you!!!

It seem like we are in these games to the end, but we do something to shoot ourselves in the foot, remember all these games we could have won and should be 3 and 0, but that is not the case and these seem to be mental errors that we need to clean up and the time is of the essence now!!! GO RAVENS!!!

To me a lot of this falls directly on coaching. Harbs hates penalties and we all know that. But, what is he doing to send a message to those who keep getting flagged? These guys are killing momentum and drives. I can't buy that they are trying to hard and the result is mistakes. Are they Pros or not? 31 other teams mange to control this type of thing a lot better than we do. True, Officiating is getting more critical of infractions. They are focused on preventing head injuries so much that they are throwing flags at everything no matter the severity of the infraction. This in time is going to ruin the game to an extent and the fan base will begin to throw in the towel. Ticket sales will begin to decline just as they have in NASCAR. we all know that you can control the outcome of a game with the yellow flag. We see it weekly now more than ever. The NFL needs to work on this facet of the game or face the consequences down the road.

Harbs has put himself in the role of absolute team leader, jettisoning contentious veteran leaders like Boldin, Pollard, etc. Problem is, it takes peer leadership to reinforce the discipline, habits and focus necessary to be a pro. Committing to proper technique, focusing on the scheme/plays (hello, secondary), and avoiding penalties are all about execution. Since Harbs has elevated himself, he's probably struggling to find enforcers in the locker room. Biscotti will take notice, no doubt.
