[News] What Has To Change For Ravens Defense To Finish?

92 posts in this topic

This defense does not "Play Like a Raven". I remember the days when the defense had swag and other teams were fearful to face up against them because the Ravens were going to punch you in the mouth and take the ball away. Now, these were the same days when our offense could only muster 10 points, but man do I miss seeing a top tier defense. It doesn't feel right.

I think everyone watching that game on TV knew on that last drive that the Bengals were just going to pass the ball over and over. It was so obvious it was almost like watching a movie with a bad ending that you've already seen before, but you keep saying to the screen "don't do that!, stay in coverage". Will Hill - that dog don't hunt!!

a trade for a receiver or pass rusher must be made if the fo wants to salvage the season

No way to salvage this season. We just have to chuck it up with the guys we have this season. Our biggest needs are Safety, DE(2), RB, LT.

I read this and think that yes, there is not 1 glaring issue, but multiple glaring issues. No reason to sugar coat it. Flacco needs to work on his fundamentals and stop throwing off his back foot. Defense needs to press coverage and jam at the line vs. staying 8-10 yards back on 3rd and 5. And where in the heck is communication? Get Dean Pees fat rear out of the booth and on the sideline. Babin and Perriman are needed NOW.

We don't have the corners to play tight man. We don't have the corners to play soft man. When they play zone the pre-snap communication (really miscommunication) between the safeties and LBs leaves massive gaps. Cover 1 has thus far proven to be a disaster as two games in a row now the WR running a seam to the side the safety isn't shading after the snap has basically walked into the end zone.

And all of this is before we even scratch the surface of how susceptible our VETERAN STARTING corner backs (and I literally shake my head while typing this) are to double moves, regardless of whether they are in man or zone coverage.

The secondary will play amazing at times, and then later in the same game it's like they revert back to rookie mistakes.

Maybe we just need to hire a guy to walk up and down the sidelines screaming "60 minutes, 60 minutes" all game long to keep people focused? Ray Lewis used to provide that service to us for free.

PS. How on earth do you lose track of AJ Green in the 4th quarter? I mean how does that happen? Every single player on defense should be pointing to him before the snap. Pees should be screaming into Darryl Smith's ear to draw attention to AJ Green. SMH.

Final pass play for Bengals. Jimmy playing 7-8 yards off of Green. Didn't get up and jam, reroute, press, whatever. Green ran his route clean right to the spot he and Dalton had practiced who knows how many times. I knew it was a touchdown before they snapped the ball. I realized the futility of our game plans at that moment. We have seen it more and more over the years. I blame myself for taking this long to see what was right there. Do the coaches see it?

Maybe we should trade SSS to a contender for something that can help us in the future. The guys deserves better than what this team can offer right now.

The Defense will be fine the Offense gotta put some points on the BOARD PERIOD! Gotta keep slinging that Rock period point blank! Defense has carried this team for years and doing a pretty good job this season if you ask me just should have beat denver and holding peyton manning under 20pts isn't easy but they did! Offense gotta open it up and carry this team they owe it to the Defense! LETS GO

Has anyone seen Courtney Upshaw? If you do please tell him he's wanted . It doesn't look like he has learned anything over the years playing behind Suggs nd Doom. I wish they would let the rookie start prepping for the future.

So we can expect tweaks in regards to scheme? "Tweaks" implies tiny changes, fine tuning. We need significant changes to scheme and certainly play calling, not tweaks. The elephant in the room is Pees. Either the DC changes or change the DC.

ever since the loss of rex ryan I have seen this defense declining and I have posted many of times on here about and yes we were still a good defense after rex but we were not the ravens d of old and then pagano leaves and since then I have felt the decline more and more rapidly, I love my team and I will root for them no matter what but I have been thinking for a while now that we needed a new D.C

We are constantly giving up 3rd and long . Jimmy is not playing like a number 1 corner, we should match him up against the number 2 WR and use a safety and DB to blanket the opposing #1 WR. Offensively I will say this again Brandon Llyod is a good deep threat WR, if anyone doesn't believe this look at his stats last year on a run oriented 49ers. The tandem of him and SSS would pose lots of problems for opposing defense. Also it would buy time for Perriman to get well. Oh and can we please put Babin on the field,

With the Bengals size with its WR corp... Melvin was the better match up...however he showed obvious signs of rust... he looked like a guy who hadn't seen action in a month.. I fully expect him to play better... I still believe that Jimmy needs to shadow AJ Green..I know that Jimmy isn't 100% yet... but we are going to need him raise his level of play... he has 2 picks in 3 games which is promising but we need him to be lock down... we could easily be 3 -0 but we not.. regardless of how this season turns out... I am backing my squad 110%... GO RAVENS!!!!

I can point at Pees but the talent level he is working with is awful.

Jimmy Smith is probably the only one who can start for a team and he is having a bad season.

I think we need to reconsider our strategy of bringing back injured players on hefty contracts.

(Webb, Pitta, Smith).

Everyone always wants to talk about 'football games are won and lost at the line of scrimmage' but then when we analyze a game, we forget that. The Ravens are having problems in the secondary, and somebody on the outside needs to make plays other than Steve Smith, but they are losing on the line of scrimmage. Don't blame Flacco for throwing off his back foot when Hurst is probably the worst player starting at any position on any team this year- no exaggeration. PFF gave him a -10 grade in Oakland and a -11.2 yesterday. That is embarrassing and you can't win like that. Don't blame Forsett for not breaking tackles- our line is the same as it was last year, but it looks like it did in 2013. You can have Melvin Gordon, Adrian Peterson or Jim Brown and if you can't even get to the line of scrimmage before contact, you're not going anywhere. On defense, we have NO PASS RUSH. None. With the exception of Dumervil's sack when they unexplicably let him go 1 on 1 with Eifert, the ONLY times we get hits on the QB are when we blitz DBs. Upshaw is not an edge rusher, Smith is not ready to be that guy yet, and all teams have to do is double Dumervil and they have all day. It's making our corners look much worse than they're playing when they have to cover all day and the QB can step into every throw. How many throws could Joe step into yesterday and drive down the field? Maybe 7 out of his 49 attempts? We're not losing with Jimmy Smith or Kamar Aiken or Forsett, we're losing on the line of scrimmage, and Trestman and Pees need to figure out how to fix that because our roster is FAR more talented than 0-3
