3rd and long is our Achilles heel!

For as long as I can remember, a good majority of our losses come during key points in the game when the defense can't make a stop on 3rd and long.  If I'm not mistaken, Cinci converted on three 3rd and longs (12, 15, 18) that all led to scores. We're no longer a "bend and don't break" defense, but more like a "break and hope for a miracle" defense.

It's defiantly a problem. I remember the years when I would be happy to see the d on the field. Now, I have no confidence in us getting a stop at any point in the game. Feels weird to say because for so many years it was the defense that carried the team, not anymore. All we can hope for is a bad throw or a dropped pass.

I pray for 3rd and short. Anything 4 and under, hoping they might run. I remember when 3rd and long was a death sentence for the opposition. It seems teams lose yards on purpose now, knowing they'll either get PI, holding, or a td. It's disgusting. You shouldn't fear third and long, but more than half the time, I don't even want to watch. It's like the secondary forgets everything they've been taught. Lack awareness, communication, technique and flat out, common sense. This team as a whole is just undisciplined.

I'd also like to add that, many of the injuries to our secondary, could've been due to their extended stay on the field. We obviously don't really sub CBs and they're too many long drives.

 

It would be nice to keep our DB's fresh, like the Dline rotation. But from now on we can sub any DB we want it won't make any difference at all our opponents will score at least a FG.

if you see how jimmy , arrington and especially melvin got abused when we tried man coverage, so i can certainly understand why he opts for prevent zone defense lol.

But Pees only plays soft zone? 3 man rush? Ummmm... conservative? He does what people ask, people don't realize and still attack him, even when he does what they say we should do.

The only options are blitzing with man coverage or a "prevent zone defense"? There are innumerable plays you can call, depending on how specific you would like to go. Different zone schemes and coverages. A combination of man and zone. A trap coverage. A zone blitz. 3-deep with man underneath.

 

Depending on how specific you'd like to go, there are a lot of things you can do with 11 defenders.

basicially you are just asuming what i meant.

 

its funny cause redrum who posted right after i made that post knew exactly what i meant.

 

both of us noticed that any form of zone coverage couple with a 3-4 man rush is called a prevent defense by many here even though it aint and the same people where specially asking for more man to man coverage and blitzes which is specficially why i only used those words. 

 

what makes this hilarious though is thats its you again who decided to run with something completely different trying to be a smart butt.
