Can we start Terrence Brooks already?

I actually don't disagree but how's it possible that same argument goes both ways? Perhaps the reality is good players make the secondary look better. I think that's the real key here. I don't think it's necessarily contingent on FS or CB or whatever. After all, good CB can also make bad safeties look better.

Exactly. I don't know what it is, but something needs to change in our secondary. Out of all the bad in the secondary I still think Will Hill is a baller and that Jimmy Smith can be a good corner. Besides those two, we need some new players in there and some new coaches could possibly help a lot too.

I like Hill a lot I am happy he got an extension. I know the defense has had issues this year but Hill has looked pretty darn good I.M.H.O.

A good FS would make a bad secondary look better and obviously Kendrick Lewis isn't doing that.

Was he overrated? I guess if you're a QB getting stared down by Megawatt you might pay less attention to the secondary.

Actually Lewis wasn't really that good with Texas last year.

Lewis had his best seasons at KC, which always seems to produce good safeties for some reason.

Actually even then, when I was researching KC DBs for one of the forum games all I seemed to find was people complaining about Lewis being slow and unable to wrap up and how when a player looked bad it was Lewis' fault more often than not.

He's not starting safety material, but our coaches are blind I guess.

I thought I remembered his PFF rating /w KC being decent.

But I can't remember exactly because I stopped subscribing to PFF because their grades often suck, so you may be onto something :P

Why's that

Hes earned his reps since getting healthy according to Harbaugh and he will see more time at safety. If he outpreforms Lewis he will take over as the starter.

Shouldn't be too hard

Why's that

Well, I got this from Harbaugh's presser.

"Harbaugh: “That’s another guy to watch. He’s really practicing fast. Every time he gets going, it seems like something knocks him back, injury-wise, just like it did three weeks ago. Now, last week he practiced really well. He’s a guy that has a chance. He can cover ground back there. He has good ball skills. He’s a hitter. He’s a high draft pick. He’s a guy that can really help us.”"

Did he say he'd get MEANINGFUL snaps? Most of the players that do well in practice SUCK for us in games. Remember the Aiken, Arrington and etc hype. Edited by Cillmatic

Which snaps are meaningful, and which don't mean anything?

By meaningful snaps I mean a lot of snaps.

I have no doubt he will get a lot of snaps. Probably more than Arrington. I'll bet he comes in for nickel situations almost every time, which may be more than half the time considering teams can't run on us.

Harbaugh has a doctorate in coach speak and I honestly think he'd talk up a piece of bread and water as a luxury meal.

That said, I hope it's true because we need someone to emerge as an option back there.

I REALLY hope he doesn't line up at nickel. I'm so tired of seeing our Safeties play CB when they have no business doing so. He's a safety, make him play safety.

In Aiken's defense he was going against our secondary and in Arrington's defense he was going against our wide receivers.

He did play quite a bit at corner in college.

But you're right, he needs to be given one role only so he can focus on that one role only.

He's better than Arrington, and even then I think he will come in as more of an extra safety, not exclusively in charge of the slot guy like your typical nickel corner. He played that role last year quite a bit.

EXACTLY. What does it say about Lewis that a 2nd year guy that didnt even finish his rookie season due to injury and a 6th(?) year vet MAKE THE SAME MISTAKES.

Let Brooks make and learn from his mistakes. He has got the speed to make plays.

It just seems SO basic for a FS not to let a guy go past him, what in the world are these PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL PLAYERS thinking about when they're out there on the field? smh

We saw the same stuff from Elam when he was the center fielder. Really need a change of scenery on the defensive coaching front and the best FS in the draft!

I could understand it more if the safeties were asked to cover outside receivers as a corner but for the most part a safety should be a capable cover man when asked to cover in the nickel. A safety for the most part is nothing but a extra cornerback that just doesn't have full capabilities of playing corner position full time atleast that's what it was called but now  defensive coaches want just about every secondary player to do everything and be versatile.

I agree, It would be sad especially given how hard he worked to rehab from that season ending injury but at this point he's such a question mark. If he doesn't get any reps from this point on then I don't want to see us rely on him to be our starting FS.

I like Hargreaves a lot....A LOT....I think he's a stud but my gut feeling is going with Ramsey simply because of need. I also disagree with CB being a need more than FS. We absolutely need a FS really bad. Too many big plays are allowed because of the lack of a coverage safety, not to mention the lack of play-making and awareness. We need all of that badly.

Yeah who even knows if we'll have a chance to get either Ramsey or Hargreaves. As of now I'm just hoping that Brooks stays healthy and gets more reps or even starts for us.

IF we finish w/ a 6-10 record(which is where I think we'll finish), that'll put us in the 8-12 range for the 2016 draft. We would have to move up or be very lucky based on other teams needs in order to get one of them.

Actually Brooks looked very good during the pre-season playing the nickel. Pees blitz him quite often and we was very effective at it.  If he can't beat out Lewis for the FS, getting him on the field at nickel isn't that bad.

Every free agent we signed for the secondary has just been horrid this year. Before the season everyone here though we were set at WR and DB's. Man were you guys wrong.

You're not wrong, but it is encouraging that he used specifics to talk up Brooks - saying he's playing fast, got good ball skills, etc. Granted I don't follow every one of his pressers (hell, I wouldn't have known about this quote had it not been brought up), but he seems to use more generic lines otherwise. We're excited about Arthur Brown, he's a great player who has a big opportunity next year and we think he could be in for a breakout season next year. (iirc that's what he said at the end of year presser a couple of years ago about Brown more or less verbatim)
