2016 Cap Space

167 posts in this topic

Any resident capologists here? Since we're dangerously close to being fully in 2016 mode, it might be a good idea to look ahead to 2016 FA, which of course starts with the cap.

I believe Ray Rice finally comes off the books after this year. Ngata should too.

What happens with Pitta? And what are the savings if Webb is cut?

Flacco of course needs to restructure but it's hard to know how much that will save right now.

As it stands we're projected to have around 13 mil in cap space next year. Cutting Webb will get it to 16 million, and cutting Pitta gets it to $17 million. The team is so young that we're projected to have tons of cap space without having Flacco restructure. Because the cap is projected to be at $150,000,000 which would not surprise me at all. Forsett being cut(which we should. I think he's a product of a good oline) makes it 19 million.

Cutting Chris Canty then gets it to $21 Million. Now I think we retain

Yanda. He'll retire here. Has a few more great seasons left.

Upshaw. A LB who's great vs the run and allows us to keep people fresh if we draft/sign a pass rusher? Yes Please.

Jensen(good depth RFA)

Aiken(RFA)

Brown(RFA)

Tucker(kicker so cheaper).

So that'll probably give us roughly $10 to play with for FA before Flacco restructures his contract.

Most of what anyone would ever want to know about NFL salary situations and team cap details: http://overthecap.com

Asking about key FAs is always kind of the wrong question to ask when talking about Ozzie, since signing FAs entails sacrificing Compensatory picks. The real question is who will be next season's cap casualties.

I think there is value in hoarding comp. picks. Maybe Ozzie does it to an extreme degree at times, which can leave holes on the roster, but there is certainly value in having 11 picks instead of 7.

If there is a year where we don't offer any good FAs to the market, then there will be no reason not to splurge in FA (other than the fact teams overpay for top talent in FA). If our only good FA next season will be KO, maybe Ozzie will feel comfortable signing one or more big-names. I highly doubt it, but it's possible.

i expect and hope to all that is holy that we sign a veteran WR.  ie vjax, roddy white, etc...i just feel those two will be options for us.  If we dont sign a veteran WR, we will go into next year with BP, camp, aiken, brown, waller.  There is no way anyone here can honestly say they would be happy with that lineup, unles BP is this years OBJ

Even if Perriman becomes the next OBJ, I would still want a good veteran to fill the #2 WR spot.

I would like a veteran wideout as well, but do not be surprised if we draft another one high next year. It all depends how this season ends but if we are in the top 10-15 we could have a chance at a top tier wideout prospect.  We do need a pass rusher, corner and left tackle as well though.  We will have cap space to sign a few decent players so hopefully we get it done

I admit, there are some college receivers I would love to have as a long term compliment to Perriman. I think Michael Thomas would be perfect. Treadwell would be amazing if he's still on the board.

If Perrimen comes back and is a typical rookie (takes him awhile to get acclimated and gets his feet wet), we will be going into next offseason with Aiken, Brown, Perrimen, Camp and Waller as WR's. There is def. some upside and potential there, but has there ever been an uglier WR core to start with?

Disagree...about there being upside and potential. The sooner we realize Aiken and Brown are JAGS the better. Waller and Camp are still mostly unknowns. I think we will have to sign a vet receiver, forget the stupid comp picks that we'll use to select Brent Urban.

As far as WRs go and cap space, I'm really confident we address it in FA and I like it that way. We won't find a Steve Smith Sr, but we can find a guy who's def. good.

We should be much more flexible this year than last. We should be able to sign more cut guys this year.

WR I believe will be addressed in the off-season. I think we sign a pretty good #2, I really think we have a good shot at Vincent Jackson from Tampa who I think will get released. So our cap goes accounted for there.

CB I believe will be a high priority in FA. I don't think we'll overpay, but I think we'll look for someone who is good.

OLB I believe will be addressed in the draft.

Look for our 2016 FA to possibly get contracts. Brandon Williams and Ricky Wagner may get extensions as well and rightfully so.

Resigns

-Yanda

-Tucker

-Upshaw

Let Go

-K.O

-Melvin(Maybe)

-Aiken

I don't know what we'll do, Ozzie always like having cap space to work with so I guess I'll have to leave it with the great Oz.

Going forward the FO needs to stop tying up money in injury prone players. For Webb to have the 2nd highest cap hit on the team is ridiculous, and Pitta should've never received that contract given the nature of his injury.

If the team keeps playing this way, don't worry. Not much much will be off the board when we pick.

I think its very likely we picked Treadwell if he's there....extremely actually. I don't see us passing on him at all. He's a beast. I don't wanna go deep into the draft, but since we're talking about cap I do believe a Vet WR is where we'll fill in the spots. Aiken is a #3 at best.

The way SSS is playing, I think he comes back for another year

Since this year likely won't end up with the playoffs, I hope he can be convinced to stay one more year. He still has it, and hopefully next year there will actually be some other help at WR.

I really hope you're right. I'd love to Perriman get the chance to learn more from him, and for any rookie receiver the Ravens pick up next year to learn from him.

What's the deal with Suggs's contract? I don't want to think like this, but I have to be realistic...an achilles tear at his age could lead to retirement.

He is owed quite a bit going forward, I am not sure how much we would owe him if he decided to retire, but I fully expect him to be back and starting next year.  Hopefully he will have a chance to mentor and teach a young pass rusher that we draft high in next years draft

So even if a player decides to retire, we are on the hook for the upcoming year while they sit at home?

If he retires this upcoming offseason then the remaining part of his signing bonus accelerates and we take a cap hit for that amount.  I am not sure what his bonus looks like at the moment, but if I remember we gave him a pretty nice sized bonus and about 16 million of his new contract is guaranteed

Yep.  A player retiring almost always has the same effect as a cut.  Teams can fight for some money back, but that's about it.

So dumb... I'll never understand the pay system in the NFL

It's because it's money already paid out.  The base salaries go away, but the guaranteed money is typically paid upon signing.  You can't just make that paid money go away, unless the team fights for it and wins the case of course.
