The good, bad and ugly vs Bengals

757 posts in this topic

Kubiak knew our line was weak and designed our offense to get the ball out quickly. I just hope this season does not stick with Joe. He is starting to gain some very bad habits from having to get rid of the ball to early and the interceptions and horrible decisions speak for themselves.

Flacco is not to blame. He is a product of what he is given in time by the O'line and the lack of talent he has available.

And what is so frustrating about all of that is despite O line play, despite the bad habits, despite the lack of weapons, despite the disappearing run game outside of the Denver game the offense has managed more than respectable numbers and Flacco has completed 71% and 65% of his passes. I can't help wondering what could have been if we'd gotten some weapons sooner.

PFF has Arrington as only giving up one reception yesterday.  That was the pass to Marvin Jones which was great coverage.  It was just a perfect throw by Dalton to where only Jones could get it, and he came down with a great catch.  I've seen a lot of people blasting both him and Webb for poor performances yesterday, but I honestly thought both of them played well.  I feel like a lot of opinions are being skewed off of a few bad plays (in Webb's case) and a disdain for Arrington after last game.

I thought on the 80 yard TD to Green after we took our big lead that lasted all of 8 seconds, that they put Green in the slot. Jimmy was on the outside and had to come off his man to try to make the tackle (which he failed to do). I thought it was Arrington on Green in that situation.

It is so hard for me to see player numbers - especially when I'm forced to watch on my PC and am all caught up in the heat of the game.

My take from yesterday's game:

The Good:

 - Steve Smith Sr. - He's a beast!

 - The TE's - I hope that Crocket Gillmore is okay. Williams and even Boyle look great and are developing well! We are probably set here for a while.

The Bad:

 - The Defense: It's a combination of things here. We all know what they are, no need to rehash this out.

 - WRs not named Steve Smith Sr. - This is cause for some serious concern. Honestly this has been a thorn at this franchise's side for far too long. Something needs to be done here.

The Ugly:

 - This season: As much as we all want to see the Ravens make it to the playoffs, our chances are very slim at this point. I hate to see this happen. No one does. It almost makes watching future games pointless. Can we bounce back? Yes. But it's going to take everyone pulling in more, except for SSS lol.

Arrington was off the field for the first portion of the game. Once the Bengals started picking on Melvin, who was floundering, he got pulled for Arrington. Kyle was solid except for the Jones play which, like you said, was well defended. He wasn't the issue yesterday. Webb was probably the most solid corner on the field, don't recall him letting up any plays.

I just read through the thread this morning and I've seen people saying that Arrington is garbage and Webb needs to be cut.  Arrington had a bad game last week, no question, but played solid yesterday from what I could see.  Webb has been our best and most consistent CB and people want him gone?  I feel like a lot of personal feelings are getting in the way of seeing that Webb in particular has been playing pretty well overall.

You all better believe the offense needs to step up too though...17 points won't cut it. But they are moving the ball more consistently than the defense is getting stops. And with far worse personnel in a new-ish system.

I'm wondering whether the link was inaccurate. The PFF page has him pegged with 3 targets, 3 receptions allowed for 46 yards. It was definitely easy to tell that Webb had a solid game, at least for me it was. I went as far as saying that he was our best CB yesterday right after the game.

I'll defer to you since I know you have the subscription.  Still, not a bad day for Arrington all in all.  You'd like to see some PD's, but one was great coverage on a 31 yard reception to Jones.  Throw that out, and you have 2 catch for 15 yards in about 3 quarters of play.  It's not a great day overall, but I can take that.

Kendrick Lewis came down in the slot on that play, and had one-on-one M2M coverage on Green. I believe the Bengals went four wide on that play and they had us in a bad personnel spot.

Sitting high up, you could kind of see this coming. People were screaming for Jimmy and Lewis to switch, but it didn't happen. Not sure if its designed that way or if there was miscommunication, but everybody in the stadium can see the massive mismatch there, and surely Andy Dalton does.

Some poor tackling on that play made it a lot bigger player than it needed to be, but Green basically waltzed right past Lewis.

There was a all praise Juan Castillo thread last season. I said in that thread that I was not ready to do that, Kubiak made his mark on that O line and let's see what happens when he is not here. (he'd already announced he was going then). No one wanted to listen.[/quote

If Castillo changed the line scheme from last year when it was so great , he deserves to be fired . Add in Pees too . You never change something that is working that well !!

I'll tell you what , if we had safety enforcer Ala Pollard I think my boy Aj Green may have been a little skittish after a couple of nasty hits .

Bernard Pollard isn't good, he's unsigned for a reason.

No doubt they both played well. Hill has been a penalty machine and Kendrick is just a warm body. Smith is playing like he did 3 years ago...lost in space. Rashan Melvin? wow I cant see him being on the roster much longer. The second TD he was toasted on he looked like he was trying to pull Jones' pants down.

He could hit back in the day . I'm not talking about bringing him in lol .

This defense has no hard hitting thumpers . Mosley to a certain extent . That's it .

Oh OK - I immediately assumed since it was a slot assignment, that it was Arrington. I knew it wasn't Jimmy.

To make matters worse, I don't know why it takes our free safety (in this case, Hill) forever to realize ... oh, look there is their #1 receiver blowing by an overmatched corner ... maybe I should head over there.

I just don't understand how we use our personnel. I thought Lewis was supposed to be the guy deep we'd have Arrington as the slot corner and Hill would be the SS underneath. Its like we're playing volleyball in the secondary and just rotate guys every play.

Mosley doesn't hit that hard on the regular and thats not a knock on him. He tries to be a sure tackler.

Perfect description. Nobody seems to have a steady role, which I'm sure adds to the confusion back there.

The first comment is inaccurate. Joe Flacco took the 9th longest amount of time before throwing the ball last season. We also had the 7th longest amount of time before the QB was sacked. We've dropped to 14th and 15th in those categories, meaning that statistically speaking Flacco has gotten rid of the ball faster this year. We've also had less attempts with 2.5 seconds or more prior to the throw. It's dropped from 43.9% to 38.3% in that category. The pass blocking simply hasn't been there. The injury to Eugene Monroe has thrust James Hurst into the LT spot, where he's been nothing short of abysmal, Rick Wagner has seemingly regressed thus far, and Kelechi Osemele hasn't looked like himself to this point as well. We had one of more talented offensive lines last season. It was far from a weak unit.

Not 4-wide but 2 WRs on the left side, 2 TEs on either side of the line, and the RB (who stayed in to block) with Dalton in the shotgun.

Jimmy stays outside, Lewis creeps up to play Green. Lewis was lost in man-to-man against AJ Green and Hill did not get to deep zone (if he was meant to) with any kind of haste.

I know Jimmy chased Green around for 227 yards.  Not sure what the reception's allowed were...  The guy took it hard last night.  I just cannot imagine that a guy fresh off a Lisfranc injury could have done better at it.  Personally, I'm not going to fault him at this point.... My thought is that we need communication, chemistry and cohesion back there.

Seem to me it is Pees failed to understand his players' strength....

Thank you. Can't disagree there. Just looks ugly that Arrington has been targeted 15 times this season and has allowed 15 completions. I'm sure that the percentage will differ at the end of the season. To piggyback your point, I have no idea why Webb was receiving any hate yesterday. He had what I considered to be his best game of the season when I was watching the game. He was also penalty free and was involved in the running game. The stats back that up, since he was targeted 3 times, allowing 1 catch for 9 yards and that terrific pass deflection. I'm unsure of whether he'll build on this performance, but he was one of the last defenders yesterday who was worth criticizing.

It seemed that way. But Jimmy wasn't on AJ for that 80 yarder.

Yeah definitely not good when you look at it that way.  I can say for sure the Oakland game wasn't a good one for him, and the Broncos game wasn't awful.  It seems he struggled with speed on the drag routes there, which is always going to happen when you're playing a few yards off of someone like Emmanuel Sanders.  Still, I don't think he's been near as awful as many are making him out to be.  We and he could stand to improve, of course, but it's not like he's Bradley Fletcher.

The one thing I will comment on was that is was good to be back at M&T Bank Stadium. The crowd was animated, especially when the Ravens got back into it, and the Bengals had some procedural errors. The players seemed excited, as well.

Even an unhealthy Monroe can't come back soon enough.  He wasn't good by any means last year, but I'd take that version of Monroe over a healthy Hurst any day of the week.  He's so bad.

Well, lets put it this way... both of the safeties screwed up big time on that play.

Lewis almost looks like he has the short side of a deep zone on that play, since he borderline stops or slows down when Green is running his deep route, and Hill is way, way, way late with his help if that's the case.

Either way, poor coverage and unbelievably poor tackling, which for me has been the biggest weakness of the secondary the last two weeks and the biggest difference from the Denver game.

Will Hill included, there aren't any secondary players I've seen out there the last two games who look like they are interested in tackling pass catchers. They look timid at best in that regard.

Hard to believe i thought the line played well compared to the rest of that disgraceful showing. Geno's name was never mentioned.

It's not good. For all the on-paper talent, they're not playing up to it.
