The good, bad and ugly vs Bengals

757 posts in this topic

It's not on Pees.......... It's a lack of communication, chemistry and cohesiveness. It's clear these guys just aren't playing well together, Hill and Jimmy included. The question is can they get on the same page and play as a unit. Oh, and it would be nice if they could tackle as well.

bye the bye......Both Digs and Graham did just fine here, wish we could have kept them.

Lack of communication for the 4th year in a row? Doubt it. Either our VETERAN DB's have been mentally stupid for the past years or Pees' system isn't good.

How come Gillmore isn't used "more?"  See what I did there?

I question that as well. Plays well and then is *poof* gone for the 2nd half.

So every year by chance we manage to put together a defensive squad full of talent that simply can't communicate with each other? Because this is not some new issue. This has been every single season once Ray & Ed were gone.

We've had different CBs and safetys pretty much every year since Ed left. And I'm not seeing where we have had a boat load of talent back there, save Jimmy and Hill. The rest have been a revolving door of experiments and Webb, well......

Harbaugh said it perfectly when asked about Smith's great playing today.  He said" Smith has been like this his entire career, and hopefully, we can find a way to cover AJ Green before he retires too.

That was more of a horrible pass by Dalton rather than any sort of great defensive play.

That was a textbook interception. Kept his back to the receiver, eyes on the quarterback, and kept the receiver to the perimeter, creating no window. It wasn't a bad throw, just terrible decision

Maxx, Gilmore and Camp saw a few plays each, I think we gotta just accept that.

They will see more and more plays as Trestman continues to forget the run game

Said the same thing. I think they'd be better switching positions. Have hill at FS and Lewis at SS, but what do I know.

I absolutely want Hill at SS, but I guess Lewis is so much of a liability that Hill has to suffice again

I can't believe how bad Melvin was out there. He was absolutely terrible. He was grabbing everyone. I'm surprised the Bengals didn't press groping charges. He was literally feeling up the WRs whenever he could. I was really irritated watching him and felt like he needed to be benched. I absolutely think we made the right decision on benching him.

Supposedly Smith Sr. went on a locker room tirade. Anyone know about this?

Adversity reveals character right? This season will reveal a lot, will likely be our first losing season under Harbaugh. Let's see how players deal with it.

Why are we making excuses for Jimmy coming off an Injury but not  Melvin who just returned from an injury?

It was his first game back.

Fair is Fair.

What was incredulous, was the commentary that Melvin was going to train up and be the starter, especially after the New England debacle.

What gets aggravating is all the "Happy Talk" you have to wade through here regarding average free agents and the expectation they will replace All Pros, which have become scorned for signing elsewhere.

Pernell McPhee was a force today. Ngata isn't playing much due to the passing attack.

Fortunately Big Has Ben is out Thursday, maybe we can eek one out and begin turning this thing around.

This. People around here get so excited about mediocre players and crucify you for "being too negative" if you don't expect them to be hall of famers along with them

I thought it was good defensive play.

It was a good play in that he caught the ball, but the pass way short of where it should have been thrown.

No, what was funny is that people were roasting him and then he gets the interception and all of a sudden it's, "We love you and never doubted you!"

That interception showed he still knows how to play the game and he's clearly still got his positioning, but he's just not there with his confidence in his foot

That interception that gave us the ball at our own twenty after he (and Hill) allowed a deep ball on a third down to move them down there from deep in their own territory was the least he could do. Edited by beanfigger

I read about the second part of that sentence, but I didn't realize that Harbs had specifically called Smith out like that.

I knew that when Harbs blew up during halftime of a pre-season game (about the defense) something was up....

That's true, but what I saw in the limited time Melvin was out there was bad technique. Jimmy didn't have bad technique he was just slow to recover.

Injuries are mental as was said earlier.

Eh I'm not agreeing with this. Reed was never going to play for much longer (and in the end, he only played an extra year, and he was so poor that Houston cut him midseason). As for mentoring a replacement, he can mentor whoever he wants, it won't make them Ed Reed. If I recall correctly he mentored Christian Thompson quite a bit. Is he even in the league anymore?

Even if you are staking out both sides of the fence, It's water under the bridge now. You can't go back and make it right. All you can do is hold accountable those whose judgment was flawed.

But for accuracy, you're talking 2013 and you might want to revisit what got Reed in trouble in Houston and analyze his play for the NYJets.

Right. No question it was good coverage, but with the right throw it would have been incomplete, not a pick. Call it a "terrible decision" to not throw ball to the corner, I call it a bad throw.

Sure, they are. Never said they're not. The difference is Jimmy Smith has actually proved something as a legitimate #1 CB. Melvin still has a ways to go to get there. It's too early to write off Melvin, though, I agree. That doesn't mean he played bad.

Veteran DBs?  In the past 3 years how many games have we had the same 5 guys playing in the secondary?

Veteran means they've been in the league for more than a year. Not a team...

And this is more of an issue than most realize.

Can you replace your panic button with this?

No, he was speaking positively about Steve Smith... sorry, should have been more specific
