Probowl talent at every level of the Ravens defense.

20 posts in this topic

If you look at the starters on our defense, we have probowl talent at every level. I truly believe this defense has what it takes to help make a good run these last 14 games.

These guys have probowl talent IMO:

D-Line: Williams and Jernigan*

LB: Mosely, D. Smith*, Dumervil*

CB: J. Smith

S: Will Hill

*possibles.

If we can get this unit playing like a machine, for the rest of the year they can actually resemble the defense that shutdown Denver.

Yes, we have some great players all over the defense, but Pees isn't putting them in the best position to succeed on a consistent enough basis.

I read an article that stated Schwartz was in waiting.  Not sure he would be the pick "in season" or at all due to the fact that he runs a 4-3.  What is everyone's take on this.  I do remember a long time ago, a very long time ago, the Ravens ran a 4-3 defense and I believe it was changed when Rex Ryan came aboard.  Please confirm or deny this as I'm not sure.

The problem is, that only makes up one side of the defense. The other teams can just run/pass to the other side. I think we will be okay, though, as the season goes on. We just need to win some games so we aren't in too much of a hole once things start to click.

Several players are Pro Bowl caliber but Pees has to step up his schemes and play calling in order for these defensive players to shine. I will settle for a win right now. I agree that the potential is there but I am so dizzy from the losses that my brain is stuck on wins and losses only.

The last time the Ravens ran a true 4-3  was with Marvin Lewis during the 1st SB with Sam Adams,Goose,McCrary and Rob Burnett on the line. I think Mike Nolan was the next DC and converted it to a 3-4 when Ed Hartwell lined up next to Ray.

Theres definitely something up with Pees's calling when he plays soft on 3rd and long or when the game is on the line after the offense give us the lead.

I'll say it. I think it was just a bad game by the defense. Talent wise, even without Suggs, I think we have top 10 talent on that side of the ball.

I think some of our guys are over ratedrated. But we do have talent but statistically we could end up in the bottom or top half depending on schemes

You do have a point. Even without Suggs, the performance in Oak. was inexcusable. This team is better than what we saw on defense.

What happened to Webb? I don't know if it's because of the ACL injury. In 2013 when he returned from the ACL injury he had a strong season and rebounded. He's been trending downward heavily and I just don't know why honestly.

Secondary position get be very tricky to determine if he is a legitimate pro.

One season he gets famous and QBs stop throwing passes near the cornerback. Next season he gets exposed and he is nothing but a scamming chump.

Scary thing is. CJ was a top 10 MLB in the NFL last year and he's improving. If he turns out to have leadership capablities then we didn't just hit a home run with him. We hit a grand slam. If he can call the defensive plays well then we've got ourselves a future superstar.

That is true, look at Alterraun Verner after all. I'm just dumbfounded by it all honestly.

That case is a tad different. Verner is a very scheme effected corner. Only capable of playing in one. When he does, it's at a very high level though.

Sadly that is Webb in a nutshell.

That said I would not quite put him in the category of  "scamming chump "   but he is not the corner he once was.  He is significantly better this season as opposed to any time last season.

EDIT: How did my font change in mid post ?

You may be right, but they need to show that going forward ... starting tomorrow. We have another bad day like that and we're set to have a bad year.

While we do have some very good players on D, we also have some major holes.

Our #2 CB is a huge weakness unless Melvin can step in and be at least average.

We have only Doom as our proven edge rusher. If you just double him, who else is going to generate pressure? Certainly not Upshaw or McClellan. Maybe Babin, but we have seen nothing from him yet, and he only had 2 sacks in 2014.

I'm also not sure about Kendrick Lewis. There were some plays deep where I thought he should have been there to help, but he couldn't get there in time. Haven't seen enough of him yet, but I would still like to see some Terrance Brooks mixed into the safety rotation.

Most teams only have one good rusher. We were just lucky to have the set up we did. I wouldn't mind seeing Brooks either.
