[News] Cornerbacks Will Davis, Rashaan Melvin Pushing For Playing Time

Great, Pees calling out the secondary for not being able to cover with no pressure upfront

Exactly. Every corner looks bad when he has to cover for 6+ seconds. We need some pressure up front!

i would have saved a draft pick, and kept working Brooks at CB, he has 4.4 speed, if we needed depth so badly...

Can't get much worse than Webb. I like Webb when he's on, probably is he never is. I say start Webb and put him on notice that the very first time he gets burnt he's gettin yanked. Maybe that will light a fire under him. Somehow I still doubt it.

Surprisingly Webb graded as our best player in the secondary in the Raiders game.

We cannot get pressure up front without tighter coverage.... so it is a catch 22. We need tight coverage for pressure and we need pressure to help the DB's - there is no disputing that but when the offense runs 3 step drops for 75% of the pass plays (in an effort to negate the pass rush) we need to adjust the scheme and stop giving 10 yard cushions. We need to be able to come up and press the WR's and need to be able to make it difficult for them to get off of the line. If we cannot adjust why would they? Teams will keep throwing the quick passes against us and take what we give them. We have big physical CB's and very athletic S's.... we have the right personal to play press or even bump and run. We need to be able to swallow our pride as Def coaches and abandon a scheme that we got out schemed on! Pees is calling out the DB's but HE set them up to fail by being to arrogant to admit he was being out schemed and he never did adjust. (This has been his MO since he got here) IF the game plan is working we are fine but if not he never adjusts in game... and forget it if they figure out our gameplan and adjust at the half... we will ride it out and hope we can simply hang on for the win. Heck the Super Bowl was a perfect example of that. How many times since Pees was here have we not been able to close a team out (Pats in the playoffs with two 14 point leads). The list goes on... we don't make adjustments and they do and we either win (but make it really interesting) or lose a game that we had every right to win. ITs not the DB's it is Dan Pees!

Will Davis has 4.37 speed and it was a 7th round. I think it was worth it.

time will tell with Davis, i just think we are pretty solid with our top 5....I would have like us to make a trade for a more seasoned LT...JMO....

It will be easy for Davis to learn Pees system stand 10 yards off the WR and watch as opposing QBs throw 5 yard passes in front of you all game long

SAMI.... agreed... it was a 7th rounder and we will get the max of comp picks again this season! (with Haloti, Tyrod, Jacoby, Ngata, McPhee, etc).

Will Davis could easily be a corner Blitz, also Arrington should be used on Safety Blitz. Both are good strong tacklers. 3-3-5 bump the receiver on the line and shoot the gap! Use the OLB to cover the TE. Lets go Pees...its time to use some innovation! Get up on the line and force the QB to hold the ball longer. Blitz packages and plug the holes with the big bodies. Do not over pursue..plug the line and force Dalton outside!

I saw some good things against the broncos and feel comfortable about the secondary! I saw good things when they played the pats put this team in a position to win it all banged up and all! Some say they couldn't hold the leads Joe got them well "KNOWING THAT" why go to the endzone with a minute plus remaining on the clock putting your banged up secondary back on the field! Like I said I'm "COMFORTABLE with the secondary and looking for some big plays out them! ITS ON AND POPPIN NOW!

we have some serious work ahead of us this sunday. if we dont come correct on Defense, we will get eaten alive, and in an embarrassing way by, Green, Sanu (both are no1 wrs in my opinion) and the rushing game of Cinci. im really praying for a huge turnaround session from our boys. for real because last week in Ca was scary bad

At this point I don't care who plays CB, I just want them to jam a receiver before the five yard mark instead of lining up on a receiver 10 yards away from the line of scrimmage. Jimmy Smith is playing pretty good 'man to man,' so they should probably lean Will Hill to the other side to help whoever is on the other side, whether it is Webb, Melvin, or Davis. If we can start jamming guys at the line, these short passes will stop killing us. We are not losing games because of the deep ball, we are losing them because our defense is on the field way too long giving them the 'quick strike' short stuff.

That is exactly right.  If Revis didn't have decent pressure he would be off the island.

I think Melvin will take Webb's job in the fairly near future. If, and this is a big if, Webb is healthy when it happens, I think we should slide him in to Arrington's slot, where I think Webb plays better than he does outside. If he's not an improvement over Arrington, then either Arrington gets back on the field or maybe the new guy, Davis gets a look see. Is Davis more of an outside guy or can he play in the middle? I don't know enough about him to know. All I Do know is we need to explore all our options to come up with the best secondary we can.

Surprisingly Webb graded as our best player in the secondary in the Raiders game.

I'm aware of that. However I think many would agree it didn't look that way with the eye test.

a defensive unit has to work in conjunction with each other, the front line need's to get consistant pressure which takes pressure of the corner's.we haven't had that great pass rush since T.SUGGS went down.until we get that pressure on the QB.the secondary will be more vulnerable.
