[News] Dean Pees: Defense Isn't Defined By One Game

73 posts in this topic

We all remember the ugly Td the bengals got last season in our house that tied the game with seconds left, don't let it happen again

Pees has given me no reason to think that if the game is one score that the defense can make a stop to win the game.

Apparently they can't, the two games this season is proof enough

Its been happening since 2012. Hell, the only stop we made was in the Superbowl and we lucked out more than anything that they just didn't run it in.

Its also worth noting one of the first thing out of his mouth is defending his scheme and then after that he can't spend the next five minutes throwing the players under the bus fast enough.

What a great coach, I'm sure that fires the players up

No wonder nobody will put any effort in on the field anymore

Hmmmm.... I'm not a newbie but i believe it was...Chuck Pagano,Rex Ryan,Mike Pettite?  :3dtext10082zo1:

Marvin Lewis, Rex Ryan, Mike Nolan, Chuck Pagano, and linebackers coach Jack Del Rio made the jump straight to Head Coach, bypassing the DC job. Those my friends were real defenses. We used to hold teams under 10 points a game. It wasnt from rushing 3, and staying in a Prevent zone.

We also had a guy by the name of Ray Lewis. Then add Ed Reed. I don't think its fair to give all credit to our D coordinators. As far as Im concerened it was a combination of good D.Coordinators with STELLAR defensive players.

The Ravens played like the Raiders were just supposed to lie down and give up. The players, not the scheme, are to blame.

Everyone took a loss. Gillmore was really the only one who came in with the gladiator mentality.

I don't care who you play in Pees schemes, they won't have much success. Sitting back in that useless zone covering empty spaces, just means there would be 4 players standing around to tackle the receiver after he makes the catch. I thought the nfl was a copycat league, why are the Ravens still stuck in this useless scheme for years now.

All of the better defenses in the nfl are pressure defenses, simple. If they have to commit more guys to get the pressure home, that is a chance they are willing to take often. Rex Ryan used to send Bart Scott up the middle on almost every play(run or pass), that's how he got 9.5 sacks in 2006 as an inside linebacker. I absolutely hate everything about Pees philosophy which he's trying to defend here. Your guys in coverage would always have more success if the QB is being pressured, even if they're in one-on one coverage. It doesn't matter if you drop 8 people back there, the receivers would always get wide open if you give the QBs all day. Surprise, surprise, we got Peyton off his game when shockingly we decided to come after him with constant pressure.

It's time to stop playing scared on defense around here. Linebackers are so far off the line of scrimmage, DBs would give a 10 yard cushion on 3rd and 5....we're so afraid of getting beat deep that we'll let you catch everything in front, and still end up scoring. What Pees has us playing is not defense, he needs to stop blaming the players because they are doing all they can possibly do in this prevent-like defense of his. Let the defense attack, let them fly around and be disruptive, if every know and then they get beat deep(happened with the great Ravens defenses of old)that's ok and a chance you're willing to take. Beats having teams march up and down the field on every drive. I'm entirely sick of watching this nonsense, and it just didn't start last game.

I'm tired of inconsistent play calling on offense and defense. Trestman looks like Cam cameron with the plane Jane predictable offense an pees just doesn't bring the heat enough. Pagano was the last coach we had that had our defense rocking. Maybe Clarence brooks can bring our defense back to form as a def coordinator. Same ole same ole every year...smh

Pees rush three or play 10 to 15yrds off doesn't cut it doesn't cut it. No pressure on QB,

we need a real DC not one whose time is up in the NFL'. If he was any good he would still

be in NE. Be ready for a very high draft pick.

C'mon Dean, your D stinks and that is the bottom line so far. Have lost 5 games in a row so far. (pre-season included). All of this Super Bowl talk every year is a freakin' sales pitch and you guys are pushing an inferior product. Just fix the problems with some talent that can deliver. Quit grabbing everyone' discarded has been players to fix our problems. I was in Buffalo on Sunday and had the opportunity to see the Bills. They played like Ravens.

It sure looks like he is defending himself rather than his men. Its double speak.  We all know the real name for that when we scream at the tv after these losses.  That 014 NE playoff game is another example.  I hope we do not go south this season. If so,he would be the first casualty.

have to say it now. if the Raiders were the worst team in the league before they beat us, then what that says about the current RAVENS team is clear to me. A lot of 0-2 supposed playoff teams this year that are not showing up on Sunday. Is it the talent pool shrinking or is it just overpaid complacent players not giving their all? I think the latter of the two is more accurate. Just hang on for 5 years and you get your NFL retirement. Not bad is it?

Several things, our cornerbacks have got to be closer to the receivers, like real close! None of ours are capable of doing this. Defensive back field has to learn how to "tackle"! Not just throw their body in front of the runners. And tackle LOW! Get rid of the back field coach and even Pees. They are not doing their job as Harbaugh has said on TV!

PFF says passer rating against Will Hill is second lowest in the NFL. Jimmy is ranked based on tackles around the middle right now. But I'm just guessing there's no faith in the remainder of the secondary to play up close and personal. You saw how Cooper carried guys after contact. That man is a different specimen of player.

FINALLY, Pees has said something that I agree with. Too little too late, though, as far as I'm concerned because all he said was the obvious. It didn't take an NFL Defensive Coordinator to figure out what he said. Us fans have been saying a lot of similar things on here for quite a while now. Something apse he said, about the defense's pride being on the line and the need to take it seriously, well, I hope that there's something else on the line too; like his job. If he knows, like he also said, that QBs are going to be getting the ball out quickly, why does he constantly have his secondary, CBs, playing so far off the line of scrimmage for all these short passes to be completed? Even on 3rd and 3s, and such. I just don't think he gets it, is not aggressive enough by nature, hasn't kept up with the trends in the league, and is trying to win living in the past. I think we need someone who is much more aggressive, gets his defense to play that way, designs schemes better suited to his players' strengths, and calls a better game, preferably from the sidelines. I prefer a pro-active coach to a reactive one. I'd really like to see him go ala Cameron (before season's end).

Finger pointing isn't needed when the Defense put you in position to win going back to the pats game! Offense had a chance to win but threw it to the endzone with a minute plus remaining on the clock! Should have ran Forsett on that play he had a "MONSTER" day! Defense even stopped Peyton Manning and held him under 20pts WHUUUUUUUUUUT? ! Now people talking about Pees Naw not here! LETS GO!

Too many missed opportunities and brady and big Ben are benefiting! The Ravens should have FOUR Super Bowls going back to Troy stripping Joe in the backfield big ben got one courtesy of the Ravens and brady got one courtesy of the Ravens with that VERY VERY VERY BAD PASS SMH! Will the Ravens "TAKE IT" or give another one away?!

The last time I heard there were 16 games in this season. If the players gave up after 2 losses like some of our fans it would be a disaster. I am sure the Ravens are not giving up and neither am I. Win lose or draw I am here for the long haul. Go Ravens.

I think that Most fans are not giving up, like you suggest. Yeah, there are some, like the ones that are already talking about how we're going to get a low draft choice. That certainly suggests that they are giving up. But, I think that most fans are just as loyal as you are. If they didn't love their Ravens, they wouldn't be on here making suggestions about what they think could turn things around and help the team improve. Say what you want, but the defense certainly played like it had given up against Oakland, with such uninspiring, lackadaisical, going through the motions type play. But that was only one game. Still, to me, not acceptable. Every time you step on the field you should give your best effort. But, the point I want to make is that I truly believe that Most fans feel exactly like you. As you put it, they're in it for the long haul, win, lose, or draw. I can tell you this for sure, because I, at least, know myself. I'm a Ravens fan for life NO MATTER WHAT! I suspect the great majority on here feel the same way.

Five years ago we were talking about Ravens defenses and how many SHUTOUTS they would have in a year. The defense was based on the fact that we got 3 and outs, and we didn't allow teams close enough to even kick a FG. Then Ray got older, players got injured and Ravens fans "accepted" "bend but don't break". We learned to be happy with the best red zone defense in the NFL and that giving up a field goal was now OK as long as we didn't give up a touchdown. Then we had a major defensive swap out, Suggs got injured and now J Smith is the only starter left from the Super Bowl team (Webb was injured). We have now become an bad defense that cant stop one of the worst offenses in the league, we cant stop anyone late in the game and teams throw on us like we don't even have ANY cornerbacks out there. Our defense no longer is respected by anyone in the NFL. So, when Dean Pees says you cant judge a defense based on one game, for 5 years I have watched this defense deteriorate, allowing players to leave and the respect, like the players have simply melted away. Now we have a basic bare bones defense without any truly outstanding players. We refuse to go out and get any top notch defenders in free agency, yet we continue to miss in the draft (Kindle, Elam, Brookes etc...) and let the best players we develop (Ellerbe, Kruger, McPhee, etc...) stock up other teams defenses. So its not one day, its five years of ignoring the defense, making bad picks, and letting great players go and that is why our defense sucks, not because they played one bad game against the Raiders.

Smith will give the "wise words" to the entire team at the end of Friday's practice, the last full practice of the week before Sunday's home opener against the Bengals. He's already got the theme of his message prepared. "We've got to take this game personally," Smith said. "Our pride as a defense is on the line"

^ And so is mine as a Ravens fan! Lol!

Let's gooooo!

What should be on the line is Dean Pees job. If he does not change his philosophy, he should be gone immediately following the game.

Trivia question: What 2 Defensive Coordinators Led us to Super Bowl Victories:

Marvin Lewis and Dean Pees. If Marvin Lewis had stuck around from 2002 till 2005 people would of been asking for his job too.

I don't understand. How did the Ravens go from 17 points and game over to 33 points and a loss under this Coach? Blitzes won't fix anything? Sounds like he is attempting to justify having 8 men standing there like statues and getting shredded. Obviously the Ravens offense doesn't use a short passing game its mainly intermediate and it sucks just like the Colts offense.
