Ravens trade 7th-round pick for CB Will Davis

173 posts in this topic

I'd have rather brought back Cassius Vaughn or signed Tony Carter, but I do think the outrage over this move is a little ridiculous, and I don't consider it a panic move at all.  I'd consider the fact that this deal was "done" before the game on Sunday.  It might have been a case of us holding the Dolphins off until Taliaferro was healthy and Magee's roster spot could be opened.  In regards to actually giving up a pick for Davis, are we really?  I went through our draft history and DeAngelo Tyson is probably the best player we ever got with a 7th rounder, and he was replaceable for his entire career here.  Campanaro could be the best in some time, but we also invested a 6th rounder into him via trade.  Otherwise, we're missing out on Marc Anthony, Aaron Mellette, Cedric Peerman, etc.  With 10-11 picks in the upcoming draft, I don't see any harm in moving the last pick to get a guy that we apparently liked in 2013.

7th round picks rarely amount to anything, even for this franchise.

As great as we are perceived from a drafting standpoint, historically we aren't great in the late rounds, just like most teams.

Since 2008:

7th round picks: Justin Harper, Allen Patrick, Anthony Allen, DeAngelo Tyson, Aaron Mellette, Marc Anthony, Michael Campanaro

6th round picks: Haruki Nakamura, Cedric Peerman, Ramon Harewood, Tyrod Taylor, Tommy Streeter, Ryan Jensen, Kapron Lewis-Moore, Keith Wenning, Darren Waller

You won't find a single stud on this list, and you MIGHT find a decent ST or role player, that's it.

We're great in the first five rounds of the draft, no question there. But late round draft picks, both league-wide and for the Ravens, generally never amount to anything.

Some people in this thread step on top of a mole hill and say "Ma, look, I've reached the peak of Mount Everest".

Its a 7th round pick, which we had extra from an earlier trade.  Heck, I'd prefer using a 7th rounder on a guy who's been in the NFL for a few years and we've actually seen play than on a prospect from college where you have no idea how their skills are going to translate.

Depth is king.

hes probably a better cover corner but he's scared to tackle. Luckily we don't play 7 yards off of Wrs and expect our CB's to tackle on open space.....oh wait....

Playing that way most CBs will suck. Just wish our DC would realize that. On the bright side Pagano may be out and looking for work.

I think that's more telling than anything. Only 2 games in and we're already looking for dollar store cornerbacks. Never seen a season start this non-optimistically.

It matches the dollar store defensive scheme playing 10 yards off the WRs

i don't get it. This guy has been non existent as a player. A bust. We give up a pick for a guy thats nothing more then a camp body?

The FO have lost it.

everyone loves to neg sami... but hes right here.

*facepalm*.

I don't like Davis as a player. I think he's a lousy tackler. But he unlike Elam has coverage skills. He's depth. And 7th rounders rarely amount to anything anyway. Very rare occurrence if it does.

If you give the choice between a 7th rounder and someone who's young with game day experience I'll take the pro thank you.

This trade is not bad.

Quite a few complaints about trading a 7th rounder for a position of need and he comes through with two big plays on money downs in a close game against a heated rival. If he does nothing else from this point on, I wouldn't even be upset.

Played very well. We'll be seeing a lot more of him.

Yeah. Pretty fair compensation so far. Melvin looked good early as well, but he played a part in us winning a game. Can't say that for many 7th round picks. I'm not sure we win this game tonight without those plays.

I'm glad he looked good tonight. I've liked him since 2013 (along with I believe Dubs?) and it's good to see him make an impact. Hopefully he continues to get better!

Arrington just dropped down the depth chart a bit, did not wrap up at all tonight from what I saw. Like what I've seen from him tonight was instinctive and made plays.

He played well in LIMITED snaps. Don't put much faith in this guy yet. Melvin looked even better in HIS first game here. And the game after that.

Well, he didn't automatically go out of his way to draw a P.I. Call every single play. So he's already better than Melvin.

Look at Melvin's first 5 games, the forum was all on the bangwagon. Davis had only 22 snaps in this game, Melvin has more in every game he played in and looked great up to the Patriots game were he unraveled. Edited by Cillmatic

Yes, but Melvin was an utter unknown. Davis put together a terrific preseason and a few scattered solid games in 2014 before coming down with the injury, so his situation shouldn't be directly compared to Melvin. Not proclaiming him to be a savior, however. Just praising his performance tonight.

Right now that 7th rd pick was worth it.

Aaron Mellete and John Simon had good preseason too...

Give the guy a break, man. Nobody's calling him Jimmy Smith or Revis. Just saying let's be optimistic and he looked good tonight. Sheesh. Some of you guys go way out of your way to appear to be realists around here.

Full of positivity, aren't we? Those are also improper comparisons considering that Davis played meaningful snaps in the regular season and performed well in most games. He faced Tom Brady last season and allowed 3 receptions on 12 targets with no scores. I'll repeat it again, by no means am I expecting him to play at a high level every week. In fact, I'd be surprised if his level of play didn't fluctuate at least to some degree. But at least give him credit for having a little over one week to digest the playbook and for playing well on national TV. My Lord, the consistent pessimism is getting to be quite redundant.

This exactly. Absolutely pounce on any complement, well deserved or otherwise.
