[News] Late For Work 9/21: Terrell Suggs Not Retiring, But Could Play Elsewhere

115 posts in this topic

I don't get people bashing Pees for going bend-but-don't-break. When we tried to get cute with our safeties early in the game and play man defense with no top help, both Jimmy and Webby got burnt deep on double move routes. BBDB concedes 5-7 yards to the offense, yes, but it (1) nullifies plays of 20 plus yards (2) keeps the game in front of you (3) allows you to bait young, inexperienced QBs who are prone to make a mistake and (4) have proven to take us deep into the playoffs repeatedly even with mediocre talent.

The problem wasn't BBDB. In fact it's what we had to revert to when we started getting gashed for big plays. The problem was a lack of consistency in applying it.

We got stuck in a dillema near the end of the game. There was too much time left on the clock so if we went BBDB, Carr could simply dink-n-dunk his way into field goal range which is not that much yardage given Janikowski's leg. So instead the decision was made to use weird psycho packages and show blitzes to make Carr nervous and force him to make mistakes. But they started going no huddle to nullify any blitzes.

All this bellyaching about the good ole days of throwing the kitchen sink at QBs... those days are gone. Spread offenses and quick release QBs simply find the zones vacated by blitzers and throw behind blitzes for big gains. No, the teams that succeed invest in pass rushers up front so the front 4 can create pressure and allow 7 guys to blanket coverage. That's today's defensive success formula.

Dean Pees did a pretty good job week one of shutting down Payton and the Broncos. I don't always agree with his tactics but one game does not a season make.

This team troubles me because it could have easily been 2 - 0 with late drives but is 0 - 2. The difference between very good teams and very bad teams isn't that much. Harbaugh needs to get to his Coordinators and get them to earn their paychecks-- Pees and Trestman.

What am I missing here? The tweet from Jason is as follows "Terrell Suggs not even considering retirement. Will begin rehab soon and will play in '16 whether for Ravens or elsewhere (has $4.5M salary)"

By your logic Suggs also didnt say that he is not even considering retirement. If that is the case then why is this info even relevant, why is it being used as the headline for the LFW article?

Dude, the possibility exists that the Ravens could trade Suggs. Would that be on Suggs or on the Ravens? Why are you assuming that Suggs directly said it instead of LaCanfora interjecting his own thoughts? As for the headline, you ever hear of Clickbait? A dramatic headline to make you want to read their article. Lighten up man.

Dan pees has to go he is done. His bend but don't break attitude is killing the history of the Ravens Defense by only blitzing three then has everybody playing off the WR by 10 yards giving them the opportunity to get a first time.

I miss the "in your face , jam receivers, here we come defenses" instead we get "bend don't break, screen zones, let's be safe defenses".......this is the Baltimore Ravens...BRING BACK THE HAMMER! That's all I got to say about that. GO RAVENS!

Dean Pees will not be bringing any hammer

I hope you are right, I really do but that still doesnt excuse him for coming into camp out of shape at 32 with Denver in Denver as our first game.

I personally don't care what he comes into camp at. I care about what he leaves camp at, and by all accounts, he left camp in great shape.

thats two weeks in a row Steve Smith dropped game winning catchable balls ☕

It was an overthrown ball, watch the replay! Steve Smith did his part to help keep us in this game so this isn't on him. Love how people are overreacting, overreaching, wailing and gnashing their teeth over this loss. Yes it was a pathetic showing but at least we still have enough of the season left to right the ship. If there is to be a finger pointed, it should be at Dean Pees for not making the necessary adjustments when we desperately needed him to.

Alright Ravens. Our back are officially against the wall. Now it's time to show what "Play Like a Raven" really means. Ravens thrive on adversity, so let's get it done!

This was the problem. When Suggs is in he almost always demands two offensive lineman to double team him. With him out, the raiders O-line didn't have to worry about him so our other guys like Williams & Jernigan were exposed for who they really are. I mean I saw them getting stood straight up at the line, and Za'darius Smith wa just flat out being pushed back. They should of kept Dumervil on the line and moved Z.Smith to OLB

The defense was terrible, but Joe Flacco missed two TD throws to Aiken and Smith. Flacco's lofted passes are crap.

idk about that, I saw Flacco throw some pretty nice passes. But I did also notice his deep balls being off target, and that one to Steve could have been better but at the same time Steve could have got his foot down.

"Suggs...could play elsewhere"...........Just the news we need to hear! smh. I just want to know why? Why this team wants to get rid of every good defender we have. I could see if we had some top notch up-n-coming DE to take his spot, but we have nobody to play alongside Doom!!

Really. Tell Ron Fritz that. It is hard to believe his quote in this article came from someone who is a sports journalist.

We don't even have a front 7 worthy of bringing the hammer now. Too small. Lawrence Guy?? Really?? I expect this team to hit next years draft hard on defense. I just hope they don't draft bust players.

I don't take LaCanfora's notion seriously.

The only reason its being brought up is 1. because he has a decently high cap number and 2. he's coming off another major injury.

Cutting him basically isn't possible, so assuming we would just trade him doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Typically, when/if we trade a player, its after a significant threat that we will cut him (see Ngata and Boldin), and we were probably planning on cutting him if we didn't find a trade partner.

That's not the case here. The Ravens could simply ask Suggs to take a small paycut (similar to Webb), but $4.5M isn't really a big salary these days for a player like Suggs anyway.

I think LaCanfora is just trying to drum something up here, and I don't see any change in Suggs status occurring.

For all of this, we could of just used a 1st round pick on a defender, and drafted a wr 2nd round. But nobody knew Perriman would be injured, from falling.

How many times do we see the defense look confused as to who is supposed to be where as the ball is being snapped? To many !! On the back end coverage is being blown for the same reason. One thought the other was supposed to be in that area. This has gone one the last couple seasons.

It is the "news" you are given, because yours is the reaction that is desired ... It is analyst speculation and not based on anything that came from either the player or the team.

It definitely could have been better. Steve Smith was wide open. Flacco didn't need to throw it out of bounds as much as he did.

I simply cannot understand one facet of our defense, why in the (bleep) do our corners play 8-10 yards off the ball?? I believe we finally have the safeties to cover over the top if we put our CBs in press coverage most of the game that would force the QB to hold on to the ball a little longer. We play zone at the worst possible time, like on Carr GW TD pass, we played soft man the whole drive and then down in the redzone we go soft zone, like really?? zones open windows and they only needed 15 yards!!! Our LBs are not that skilled in coverage, we need to go Dime sometimes that alllows D. Smith tocome off the field and let CJ cover the running back or TE. Also, i kinda believe we were too passive, i understand going for the sure 3 at the end of the half, but we were inside the 10. Joe underthrew receivers all day on deep routes. he lofts the ball too much which allows the defense time to recover. yes he played a great game but this great game could have easily been the best of the weekend if he wouldn't have under thrown aiken on that bomb, under throw waller on back to back fades, and the lob to SSS at the end.
